TL;DR: It is concluded that applying a CDIO approach for a CPS program together with infusion of a suitable portion of SE practices appears to be a promising way forward to reform CPS programs.
Abstract: Education of future engineers and other stakeholders will be of paramount importance for designing, producing, procuring, operating and managing future Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) of unprecedented complexity that will underpin most technological systems in society. We investigate the relation between CPS, Systems Engineering (SE) and the Conceive - Design - Implement -Operate (CDIO) engineering education initiative with the aim to find ways of improving current CPS education. With its emphasis on experiences with realistic engineering settings, lifecycle perspective and complementary skills in communication and collaboration, CDIO provides several ingredients that are essential for future engineers. SE with its set of best practices and systems thinking, provides guidelines and practices of strong relevance for most (if not all) engineering programs and especially for those involving the engineering of highly complex systems such as CPS. We conclude that applying a CDIO approach for a CPS program together with infusion of a suitable portion of SE practices appears to be a promising way forward to reform CPS programs. We discuss how such SE practices can be integrated into engineering programs and in particular propose aspects of SE that would be useful to incorporate into capstone courses (larger education projects in the final master level stages).

TL;DR: In this article, a cylindrical valve body with air intake at one end and an end wall extending laterally is used to direct the air to one aperture or another connected to the air jets.
Abstract: The device has two air distributors. Each consists of a casing (2) with cylindrical wall. The casing contains a cylindrical valve body with air intake at one end and an end wall extending laterally. The casing has an air intake (10) in one end, and an endface wall (8) extending across the other end, and has at least two air outputs (12, 14) in the side wall and another (16) in the end wall. By turning the valve body in the casing, one or more outlets can be wholly or partly covered, so that the air can be directed to one aperture or another connected to the air jets, to direct the air as required.

TL;DR: The main contribution of this paper is the proposal and discussion of the Sliding Window Local Outlier Conformal Anomaly Detector (SWLO-CAD), which is an algorithm for online detection of local sub-trajectory anomalies and operates online with well-calibrated false alarm rate.
Abstract: Automated detection of anomalous trajectories is an important problem in the surveillance domain. Various algorithms based on learning of normal trajectory patterns have been proposed for this problem. Yet, these algorithms suffer from one or more of the following limitations: First, they are essentially designed for offline anomaly detection in databases. Second, they are insensitive to local sub-trajectory anomalies. Third, they involve tuning of many parameters and may suffer from high false alarm rates. The main contribution of this paper is the proposal and discussion of the Sliding Window Local Outlier Conformal Anomaly Detector (SWLO-CAD), which is an algorithm for online detection of local sub-trajectory anomalies. It is an instance of the previously proposed Conformal anomaly detector and, hence, operates online with well-calibrated false alarm rate. Moreover, SWLO-CAD is based on Local outlier factor, which is a previously proposed outlier measure that is sensitive to local anomalies. Thus, SWLO-CAD has a unique set of properties that address the issues above.

TL;DR: In this article, a Monte-Carlo simulation of a screw over its yield point in a controlled fashion is presented, based on the probabilistic nature of different variables necessary to calculate screwed joints.
Abstract: This paper presents a technique, based on Monte-Carlo simulations, of utilizing a screw over its yield point in a controlled fashion, even under simple tightening conditions. The simulations consider the probabilistic nature of different variables necessary to calculate screwed joints. The proposed torque and angle controlled tightening technique can be used in assembly plants as well as in small workshops. The technique predicts permanent elongation, maximum tightening angle, final torque and preload after tightening. Further, a recommendation on the minimum and maximum snug torques prior to application of the angle over the yield point of a screw is also presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, an electronic control unit is used to determine the combustion chamber that will be in the compression stroke according to a predetermined sequence, based on the predetermined sequence and the knowledge of the combustion chambers that first is in compression stroke.
Abstract: A combustion engine comprises at least two combustion chambers and an ignition system having a spark device (11, 13) forming an electrode gap and a charging member (20) for accumulating the electrical energy necessary for generating a spark in the electrode gap. The combustion chambers are in the compression stroke according to a predetermined sequence. During a first engine revolution, high voltage pulses are supplied at a high frequency to all spark devices (11, 13). The spark voltage in the electrode gap of each spark device (11, 13) is measured for each spark. Based on the measured spark voltage of the different spark devices, the combustion chamber that first will be in the compression stroke is determined by means of an electronic control unit (3). Based on the predetermined sequence and the knowledge of the combustion chamber that first is in the compression stroke, fuel is injected in the combustion chamber that next will be in the compression stroke.
