Abstract: In many species of lizards, males attain greater body size and have larger heads than female lizards of the same size. Often, the dimorphism in head size is paralleled by a dimorphism in bite force. However, the underlying functional morphological basis for the dimorphism in bite force remains unclear. Here, we test whether males are larger, and have larger heads and bite forces than females for a given body size in a large sample of Anolis carolinensis. Next, we test if overall head shape differs between the sexes, or if instead specific aspects of skull shape can explain differences in bite force. Our results show that A. carolinensis is indeed dimorphic in body and head size and that males bite harder than females. Geometric morphometric analyses show distinct differences in skull shape between males and females, principally reflecting an enlargement of the jaw adductor muscle chamber. Jaw adductor muscle mass data confirm this result and show that males have larger jaw adductors (but not jaw openers) for a given body and head size. Thus, the observed dimorphism in bite force in A. carolinensis is not merely the result of an increase in head size, but involves distinct morphological changes in skull structure and the associated jaw adductor musculature. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 91, 111–119.

Abstract: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with larger heart rate (HR), skin conductance (SC), and eyeblink responses to sudden, loud tones. The present study tested this association in female nurse veterans with PTSD related to witnessing patients' death, severe injury and/or suffering during their Vietnam service. Nurses with current, past but not current, or who never had PTSD listened to 15 consecutive 95-dB, 500-ms, 1000-Hz tones with sudden onsets, while HR, SC, and eyeblink responses were measured. Nurses with current PTSD produced significantly larger averaged HR, but not SC or eyeblink responses across tone trials. A larger HR response to loud tones is one of the most robust physiologic findings in PTSD and may reflect increased defensive responding.

The article shows the importance of core attributes are recoverable equally well, regardless of the method. Importances of secondary attributes, however, vary depending on the estimation method. This difference is systematic. Researchers should use derived methods for assessing satisfaction with secondary attributes. The data are from surveys from visitors to Latin America.

Abstract: Recent embedded systems have switched to fully programmable parallel architectures. To make sure all corner cases usually present in real applications are supported and efficiently implemented in this switch of implementation, new solutions must be found. We introduce the integral parallel architecture (IPA) as a solution supporting intensive data computation in System-on-a-chip (Soc) implementations, fitting in a small area, and requiring low power. An IPA supports naturally all three possible styles of parallelism: data, time, and speculative.As an illustrative example, we present the BA1024 chip, a fully programmable SoC designed by BrightScale, Inc. for HDTV codecs. Its main performance figures include 60 GOPS/Watt and 2 GOPS/mm2, representing an efficient IPA approach for embedded computation.

Abstract: Suffering is an inevitable reality that student nurses may be unprepared to witness. The 14-week college course, Understanding Suffering, was developed to help students better understand the suffering experience. Content for the course was drawn from nursing, sociological, and theological perspectives. Students scored significantly higher on a post-course evaluation of empathy and stated they felt better prepared to intervene in difficult clinical situations involving suffering. Course development, assignments, and evaluation are described in the article.

Abstract: Margaret Newman's theory, Health as Expanding Consciousness (HEC), was used to examine the life pattern of two incarcerated mothers awaiting release from prison. Pattern recognition provided a way to approach understanding the experience of incarceration in a novel fashion. The process increased trust between the mothers and the nurse, and was a useful strategy in articulating the contribution of nursing science and humanistic care.

The chondrocrania of North American Rana larvae (Anura: Ranidae): a morphological comparison. — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 89 : 279-288 A detailed morphological description of the chondrocranium is provided for the larvae of six species of North American Rana. Results indicated that although qualitative variation in chondrocranial morphology was limited among the larval Rana examined here, R. sylvatica is clearly distinguishable from other species based on the presence of a shorter articular process of the palatoquadrate, a wider muscular process of the palatoquadrate, and a more posterior position of attachment of the larval otic process to the palatoquadrate. These conditions are similar to those found in the Eurasian R. temporaria . Rana clamitans and R. catesbeiana are distinguished by a considerably narrower palatoquadrate in the region posterior to the anterior quadratocranial commissure, a more anterior position of attachment of the larval otic process to the palatoquadrate, and the presence of a lateral trabecular process in some specimens. These characters may represent larval synapomorphies for the traditional R. catesbeiana group (= Aquarana ).

Abstract: Hatchling Common Snapping Turtles ( Chelydra serpentina ) were captured within, or as they emerged from, their nest cavities in Long Island, New York, and in southeastern New Hampshire. They were fitted with radiotransmitters and released at their nest sites. Their movements were monitored for as long as possible, which for some included tracking them to their overwintering sites and relocating them the following spring. On Long Island, all hatchlings initially moved to water. Later movements were both aquatic and terrestrial, and those that could be located while overwintering had left the water and hibernated in spring seeps, where they were recovered alive the following April. In New Hampshire, hatchlings moved directly to nearby aquatic habitats after emergence, where they spent the winter submerged in shallow water in root masses near banks.

Abstract: We discuss the parallel implementation of neural networks on a Connex Array™circuit. By estimating the number of memory cycles, we approximate the real performance of the machine. We show how to implement a basic neural learning algorithm. Our preliminary study suggests that the Connex Array™is a good neural network accelerator, due to its high performance for vector operations. The execution time obtained is significant: 5 GCUPS, at 2.5 watts, on less than 1 cm2 area.

Abstract: This article is a brief commentary on Donald Turner and Ford Turrell’s “The Non-Existent God: Transcendence, Humanity, and Ethics in Emmanuel Levinas.” While I agree with Turner and Turrell’s general presentation of Levinas’s existential conception of God and ethics, I reflect primarily on the reference the authors make to Kierkegaard as an existentialist forefather of Levinas. I show certain basic similarities between Levinas and Kierkegaard as existentialist thinkers, but also note their differences, also taking into consideration the influence of Hegel. This paper was delivered in the APA Pacific 2007 Mini-Conference on Models of God.
