Life regrets and life satisfaction in mature adults

Abstract: Individuals have to make many decisions throughout the lifespan. This is very likely to yield some decision outcomes that will leave a decision-maker with the feeling of regret, which can ultimately affect an individual’s well-being. The present study demonstrated the psychometric properties of a newly developed scale, the Life Regrets Scale. One hundred and nineteen mature adults between the ages of 39 and 76 completed the Life Regrets Scale. To check the validity of the life regrets scale, participants completed scales assessing the following constructs: life satisfaction, decision outcomes, and positive and negative affect. In addition, participants completed scales assessing dispositional factors including the big 5 personality factors and emotion regulation strategies. It was positively correlated with regret tendency and negative affect and negatively correlated with life satisfaction, positive affect, and decision outcomes. Dispositional variables, including personality factors, emotion regulation strategies, and affect, accounted for a significant amount of variance in predicting life satisfaction. However, life regrets uniquely accounted for variance in life satisfaction more so than dispositional factors. Results suggest that life regrets uniquely contributes to an individual’s well-being. The life regrets scale can be a useful tool for quickly assessing the intensity of life regrets that may contribute to an individual’s life satisfaction.

Comparative sonographic review of benign and malignant breast masses

Abstract: Complex breast masses may appear as suspicious ultrasound findings that usually warrant biopsy. Ductal cell carcinoma in-situ (DCIS) is a form of breast cancer with a non-uniform appearance and malignant potential. A longitudinal review of mammary gland ultrasound (with high frequency transducer) within a three-year period was conducted. Differential diagnosis of fibroadenoma, lactating adenoma, mastitis, galactocele, breast cancer, abscess and “general” masses greater than 16 mm in diameter was stratified. Based on the breast imaging reporting in data system (BIRADS), lesions were classified as benign or malignant and recommendations of cytology made in cases of observed overlap findings. Image sonomorphologic information on mass-echogenic halo and non-uniform orientation were documented; while malignant factors like scar tissue, focal fibrosis and papillomas may be associated with a false positive (conclusion) result. Doppler studies on further mass evaluation is encouraged.

Ulnar tunnel syndrome.

Abstract: The ulnar tunnel syndrome is a relatively uncommon condition resulting from compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes through the loge de Guyon, or ulnar tunnel, in the wrist. The syndrome may cause weakness and atrophy of the intrinsic hand muscles and loss of sensation in the ulnar nerve distribution of the hand. The most common cause of ulnar tunnel syndrome is chronic occupational trauma, either from pressure exerted over the hypothenar eminence by a tool or from the use of the heel of the hand as a hammer. Nonoccupational etiologies include congenital, inflammatory, neoplastic, vascular, metabolic, degenerative and traumatic disorders. Diagnosis often requires neurophysiologic evaluation, in addition to a careful history and physical examination. Conservative treatment aimed at protecting the ulnar tunnel from trauma frequently is effective. Occasionally, surgical decompression of the ulnar tunnel is required.

NRG Oncology/NSABP B-47 menstrual history study: impact of adjuvant chemotherapy with and without trastuzumab.

Abstract: The NRG Oncology/NSABP B-47 menstrual history (MH) study examined trastuzumab effects on menstrual status and associated circulating reproductive hormones. MH was evaluated by questions related to hysterectomy, oophorectomy, and reported menstrual changes. Pre/perimenopausal women were assessed at entry, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months. Consenting women had estradiol and FSH measurement at entry, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Logistic regression determined predictors of amenorrhea and hormone levels at 12, 24, and 36 months. Between 2/8/2011 and 2/10/2015, 3270 women with node-positive/high-risk node-negative HER2-low breast cancer were enrolled. There were 1,458 women enrolled in the MH study; 1231 consented to baseline blood samples. Trastuzumab did not contribute to a higher amenorrhea rate. Amenorrhea predictors were consistent with earlier studies; however, to our knowledge, this is the largest prospective study to include serial reproductive hormone measurements to 24 months and clinical amenorrhea reports to 36 months. These data can help to counsel patients regarding premature menopause risk.
