The Transcriptional Corepressor CtBP: A Foe of Multiple Tumor Suppressors

Abstract: CtBP1 and CtBP2 are closely related and evolutionarily conserved transcriptional corepressors. There is strong evidence linking CtBPs to tumorigenesis and tumor progression. CtBPs promote epithelial-mesenchymal transition and function as apoptosis antagonists. Also, CtBPs mediate repression of several tumor suppressor genes. Certain tumor suppressors also target CtBPs to restrain their tumor-promoting activity. Down-regulation of CtBPs mediated by some tumor suppressors results in p53-independent apoptosis and reduced tumor cell migration and invasion. The role of CtBPs in modulating the activities of different tumor suppressors is reviewed here. The results discussed here suggest that CtBPs may constitute a novel p53-independent anticancer target.

Reconciling Internalization Theory and the Eclectic Paradigm

Abstract: The eclectic paradigm of Dunning (1980) (with its OLI and four motives for FDI framework) can be reconciled with the firm and country matrix of Rugman (1981). However, the fit is not perfect. The main reason for misalignment is that Dunning is focused upon outward FDI into host economies, whereas Rugman’s matrix is for firm‐level strategy covering MNE activity in both home and host countries

Estrogen-induced changes in place and response learning in young adult female rats

Abstract: Many findings suggest that changes in circulating estrogen levels influence cognition, in some cases impairing performance and in others enhancing performance. One interpretation of these mixed effects is that estrogen biases the strategy used to solve a task. To test this idea, young adult female rats, ovariectomized for 21 days, were trained after acute hormone or control treatment in 2 very similar tasks with different cognitive requirements. One task required place learning and the other response learning. Rats given two 10-microg injections of estradiol 48 and 24 hr before training learned the place task significantly faster than did rats without estradiol. Conversely, rats without estradiol performed better on the response task than did rats with replacement. These data suggest that the cognitive actions of estrogen may be task-specific by modulating the relative contribution of different learning and memory systems.
