30 Mar 2012TL;DR: In this article, a method for wirelessly charging a portable terminal using a Radio Frequency (RF) is provided, where a charging system detects one or more portable terminals within a predetermined area, and preferably requests information needed for charging to the one or multiple portable terminals via short-range communication, receives the information in response needed to charge from each of the devices, and the charging system transmits a predetermined RF for the selected portable terminal.
Abstract: A method for wirelessly charging a portable terminal using a Radio Frequency (RF) is provided. A charging system detects one or more portable terminals within a predetermined area, and preferably requests information needed for charging to the one or more portable terminals via short-range communication, receives the information in response needed for charging from each of the one or more portable terminals. A portable terminal to be wirelessly charged from among the one or more portable terminals is selected, based on the received information needed for charging, and the charging system transmits a predetermined RF for charging to the selected portable terminal.

13 Dec 2011TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an apparatus and a method for simultaneously transmitting and receiving a wireless power and data, which can include a modulator configured to modulate first data by adjusting a power amount to be charged in one or more capacitors.
Abstract: Provided are an apparatus and a method for simultaneously transmitting and receiving a wireless power and data. A wireless power and data transmission apparatus may include: a modulator configured to modulate first data by adjusting a power amount to be charged in one or more capacitors; a switch controller configured to control one or more switches corresponding the one or more capacitors based on a charging time to charge the one or more capacitors and a transfer time to transfer a power charged in the one or more capacitors and the modulated first data to a source resonator; and a transmitter configured to transmit the charged power and the modulated first data using the source resonator.

TL;DR: A novel method for efficient DNA extraction and subsequent real-time detection in a single microchip by combining laser irradiation and magnetic beads is reported, suggesting that the new sample preparation method is well suited to be integrated into lab-on-a-chip application of the pathogen detection system.
Abstract: Optimal detection of a pathogen present in biological samples depends on the ability to extract DNA molecules rapidly and efficiently. In this paper, we report a novel method for efficient DNA extraction and subsequent real-time detection in a single microchip by combining laser irradiation and magnetic beads. By using a 808 nm laser and carboxyl-terminated magnetic beads, we demonstrate that a single pulse of 40 seconds lysed pathogens including E. coli and Gram-positive bacterial cells as well as the hepatitis B virus mixed with human serum. We further demonstrate that the real-time pathogen detection was performed with pre-mixed PCR reagents in a real-time PCR machine using the same microchip, after laser irradiation in a hand-held device equipped with a small laser diode. These results suggest that the new sample preparation method is well suited to be integrated into lab-on-a-chip application of the pathogen detection system.

TL;DR: Surfactant-free nanoflakes of n-type Bi2 Te3 and Bi2 Se3 are synthesized in high yields to create nanocomposites with heterostructured nanograins and a maximum ZT (0.7 at 400 K) is achieved with a broad content of 10-15% Bi 2 Se3 in the nanocom composites.

TL;DR: The authors introduce a new selected mapping (SLM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme with low computational complexity, while it shows almost the same performance of PAPR reduction as that of the conventional SLM OFDM scheme.
Abstract: The authors introduce a new selected mapping (SLM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme with low computational complexity. The proposed SLM scheme transforms an input symbol sequence into a set of OFDM signals by multiplying the phase sequences to the signal after a certain intermediate stage of inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). Then, the OFDM signal with the lowest peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is selected for transmission. The new SLM OFDM scheme reduces the computational complexity, while it shows almost the same performance of PAPR reduction as that of the conventional SLM OFDM scheme.
