TL;DR: Traditional Chinese philosophical views of the universe consisting of 2 opposing components the Yin and the Yang influence dietary habits and that dietitians in the United States working with Chinese communities must be aware of this influence.
Abstract: Chang suggests that traditional Chinese philosophical views of the universe consisting of 2 opposing components the Yin and the Yang influence dietary habits and that dietitians in the United States working with Chinese communities must be aware of this influence. A balance of a number of factors including hot and cold foods is thought to relate to health. Also food preferences based on cultural eating patterns should be considered by dietitians when planning therapeutic lists particularly during pregnancy and postpartum when many Chinese women closely follow traditional customs. Supplementation of traditional foods with other foods during this period should be encouraged as well as continuation of the prenatal vitamins.

TL;DR: In this article, an upward trend of psychoactive drug use within the lower grade levels was observed among 616 high school students, and over half of them claimed they took drugs either "for kicks" or "for curiosity".
Abstract: An upward trend of psychoactive drug use within the lower grade levels was observed among 616 high school students. Although different patterns of drug use exist between parochial and public high school sophomores, by their junior year the two groups were similar. Over half of the public high school students claimed they take drugs either “for kicks” or “for curiosity”.

TL;DR: Les modes possibles de dispersion de ces organismes dont les larves ne s'alimentent pas et sont de mediocres nageuses, sont trop hypothetiques pour expliquer the biogeographie de l'espece.
Abstract: Lithoglyptes spinatus Tomlinson & Newman, 1960, a d'abord ete decrit de la region caraibe.

TL;DR: The new data indicate that the origin of life was in some sense foreordained from the beginning, a view long held by Professor Oparin and which has gained increasing support.
Abstract: We are all indebted to Professor Oparin for reopening the origin of life problem in a scientific context (1,2). His writings were the original inspiration of what has become an impressive body of experimental research, especially in the last two decades. The immense value of Oparin’s general conceptions on biogenesis is that they provide the overall theoretical framework in which specific experiments are conducted and interpreted. In recent years the view that life is an inevitable outcome of the properties of matter and energy, a view long held by Professor Oparin, has gained increasing support. The alternative view that life was the result of a lucky random combination of chemical substances was popular when the experimental data on origins were still scanty. However, this erroneous view has persisted in uninformed discussion of the subject in many biology textbooks and in the recent criticism of the chemical theory of origins by the new creationists (3). The new data, taken in toto, indicate that the origin was in some sense, which must be carefully spelled out, foreordained from the beginning (4).

TL;DR: By the use of this technique, approximately 99 percent of extracellular DDT particles can be removed from a suspension of Chlorella cells by centrifugation in a discontinuous Ficoll density gradient.
Abstract: DDT, when used at concentrations exceeding its water solubility, forms heterogeneous particles which are not separable from phytoplankton by normal centrifugation or by filtration. Accurate and complete kinetic studies of DDT-phytoplankton interactions therefore, have not been possible. We have found that extracellular DDT particles are separable fromChlorella cells by centrifugation in a discontinuous Ficoll density gradient. The DDT is retained by an 11.5 percent Ficoll layer while theChlorella cells sediment on a 30 percent layer. By the use of this technique, approximately 99 percent of extracellular DDT particles can be removed from a suspension ofChlorella.

TL;DR: The results of this study suggest that no functional difference between the concepts of generality and ambiguity was perceived by the participating subjects.
Abstract: The broad problem in this study is to examine some relationships between generality and ambiguity for a set of words. The generality of a word refers to the inclusivesness of a class which the word names; and the more general the word, the less narrow is the referent class it represents. The ambiguity of a word is a condition where a word evokes more than one meaning response in a perceiver. The results of this study suggest that no functional difference between the concepts of generality and ambiguity was perceived by the participating subjects.

TL;DR: The authors found that Ss who viewed brutal Goya etchings rated aggressive cartoons as significantly less funny than those who had viewed neutral Goya paintings, but this effect did not occur with the nonaggressive cartoons.
Abstract: Singer, Gollob, and Levine (1967) found that Ss who had viewed brutal Goya etchings rated aggressive cartoons as significantly less funny than Ss who had viewed neutral Goya etchings; this effect did not occur with the nonaggressive cartoons. Singer, et al. attributed the decreased humor ratings to the psychoanalytic concept of mobilized inhibitions against aggression. The present study attempted to mobilize these inhibitions by means of a written description of torture. ColIege students (15 male and 15 female) were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. One group read a vivid description of a brutal torture-murder which was introduced in such a way as to condemn the act fully while a second group read the identical description so introduced as to mitigate the enormity of the torture (expected to lessen the inhibition effect). A control group read a nonaggressive passage of equal length. Immediately after reading the passage. all Ss rated 16 cartoons for humor on a four-point scale ranging from not funny to very funny. Eight of the cartoons were nonaggressive and 8 aggressive; the aggressive cartoons depicted beatings, torture, and murder. The cartoons were arranged in random order. A two-way analysis of variance (sex and treatment as main effects) was performed on the difference berween Ss' aggressive cartoon score and neutral score to check for the predicted differential lowering of ratings in the aggressive cartoons. Another two-wag analysis of variance was performed on rhe total humor scores to check for a possible generalized inhibitory effect. Neither test yielded significant results (Ps < 1.00). Although all but two of the 20 Ss reported that the torture description was unpleasant to read, it is quite possible that the treatment did not have the desired potenq. Or, it may have been that inhibitions were mobilized but that a concomitant arousal of aggressive drive neutralized the effect. Dworkin and Efran (1967) demotutrated that aggressive arousal is capable of increasing humor ratings of aggressive humor. It remains for fume research to determine the validity of the psychoanalytic framework by manipulating the degree to which each variable operates.

TL;DR: In this article, a child's baseline speaking skills are determined prior to training through analysis of 100 spontaneous utterances, and the resulting information enables clinicians to program language learning tasks for a specific child in accordance with developmental language sequences.
Abstract: A child's baseline speaking skills are determined prior to training through analysis of 100 spontaneous utterances. Analysis of this language sample considers linguistic constructions, features within these constructions, number of words/utterance and number of morphemes/utterance. The resulting information enables clinicians to program language learning tasks for a specific child in accordance with developmental language sequences. Language programs developed by clinicians follow conventional programming and reinforcement principles and are appropriate for individual or small group training. The training procedure follows these steps: (1) language sampling; (2) analyzing the sample; and (3) training.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of pressure variation and its duration on wheat seedlings were studied under continuous low-level illumination and the results indicated a general overall reduction in growth associated with the shock pulse and that the pressure duration interval influenced the shock- growth response.
Abstract: Wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum cv. Pacific Blue Stem) grown under continuous low-level illumination were used to study the effects of pressure variation and its duration. Growth was determined by dry weights, leaf length, and types of secondary roots produced. Two sublethal shock pulses (1.41 and 2.82 kg cm −2) and three pressure duration intervals (0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 seconds) were studied. The results indicated a general overall reduction in growth associated with the shock pulse and that the pressure duration interval influenced the shock- growth response. The long pressure duration interval was found to be the most influential on shock pulse response. Present knowledge indicates that a pulse rise-time of 1 ms and a pressure duration interval of at least 1.0 second affect plant growth at sublethal shock pulses, such that the growth response is linear or bi-directional, depending on the magnitude of the shock pulses, and either linear or complex with respect to pressure duration interval for any shock pulse level.
