TL;DR: Theories about the development of each component and how they combine and conflict to form the individualAE's sexual identity are discussed in this paper, which may help to clarify meanings of the following terms used in research on sexual identity: sex, gender, femininity, masculinity, heterosexuality, and homosexuality.
Abstract: This paper examines the four components of sexual identity: biological sex, gender identity, social sex-role, and sexual orientation. Theories about he development of each component and how they combine and conflict to form the individualAEs sexual identity are discussed. As defined here, social sex-role includes the individualAEs femininity and masculinity. Sexual orientation includes the individualAEs physical and offectional sexual preferences for relationships with members of the same and/or opposite biological sex. This paper may help to clarify meanings of the following terms used in research on sexual identity: sex, gender, femininity, masculinity, heterosexuality, and homosexuality.

TL;DR: A heuristic feedback system model for the human disparity-vergence eye movements is described and simulation studies of the model responses for both step and sinusoidal responses fit the experimentally obtained results.
Abstract: A heuristic feedback system model for the human disparity-vergence eye movements is described. The system has been modeled as a continuous negative feedback system with a modified integral-derivative controller, a time-delay element, and a third-order plant. Simulation studies of the model responses for both step and sinusoidal responses fit the experimentally obtained results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors made measurements of wind, surface circulation, hydrography, nutrients, and phytoplankton and zooplankt rate processes in a time series at 27/sup 0/N during April 1973.
Abstract: Measurements were made of wind, surface circulation, hydrography, nutrients, and phytoplankton and zooplankton rate processes in a time series at 27/sup 0/N during April 1973. A string of current meters and a towed acoustic body were also used to assess the distribution of subsurface currents and red crabs. The seasonal onset of upwelling had already occurred. Diatoms were initially the dominant primary producers. Two perturbations of the upwelling state were observed in response to relaxation of the winds. A comparison of this study with a preceding one in March 1972 indicates that the rate of upwelling, the nutrient content, and the phytoplankton specific growth rate were about the same in both years. The total productivity and biomass of the phytoplankton were less in 1973, implying that greater grazing stress was associated with a switch from smaller dinoflagellates to larger diatoms. Local temporal variability of upwelling off Baja California is postulated to have led to the replacement of clupeids by the red crab, Pleuroncodes planipes, as a facultative herbivore.

TL;DR: In this article, it is suggested that feldspathic granulitic impactites, which are characterized by a high model plagioclase content of between 70 and 80%, all formed in the period after consolidation of the lunar crust and before the final bombardment.
Abstract: It is suggested that feldspathic granulitic impactites, which are characterized by a high model plagioclase content of between 70 and 80%, all formed in the period after consolidation of the lunar crust and before the final bombardment. The granulitic impactites contain essentially no KREEP component, which suggests that KREEP appeared on the lunar surface mostly after the formation of the granulitic impactites, at about the start of the final bombardment. The granulite metamorphism indicated by the matrix textures of these samples requires 1000 C temperatures for prolonged periods of time. The apparent sequence of formation is granulitic impactites before the final bombardment, crystalline-matrix breccias during the final bombardment, and vitric-matrix breccias after the final bombardment. The sequence is consistent with a described thermal model of breccia lithification and with characteristics of the decay of the meteorite flux rate.

TL;DR: Results of a questionnaire assessing communication skills, social orientation and involvement, self-disclosure, physical accessibility, and verbal defensiveness suggest that communicative inadequacies may contribute to repeated contraceptive failure.
Abstract: Communication patterns of women who had never been pregnant were compared with those of women who had two or more unplanned pregnancies. Results of a questionnaire assessing communication skills, social orientation and involvement, self-disclosure, physical accessibility, and verbal defensiveness, completed by 56 women attending family planning clinics, suggest that communicative inadequacies may contribute to repeated contraceptive failure.

TL;DR: Two subtidal populations from the San Diego, California, area, one from an exposed coastal location and a second from a protected tidal channel, were compared for several aspects of their population and reproductive biology.
Abstract: Populations of the sand dollar Dendraster excentricus (Eschscholtz) occur in different habitats along the west coast of the USA. Two subtidal populations from the San Diego, California, area, one from an exposed coastal location and a second from a protected tidal channel, were compared for several aspects of their population and reproductive biology. Both populations demonstrated a similar schedule of reproductive activity with peak gonad volumes occurring in the early spring. However, population reproductive readiness and individual reproductive effort and size varied considerably between the populations; individuals in the protected tidal channel were larger and produced proportionately larger gonads with ripe gametes for a longer period, than those on the exposed coast. The differences between the populations are explained by the greater demands of the rigorous exposed habitat for maintenance at the cost of reproductive effort and growth.

Abstract: 3 adept meditators voluntarily inserted steel needles into their bodies while physiological measures (EEG, EMG, GSR, EKG, and respiratbn)were recorded. Although each adept used a different passive attention technique, none reported pain. During the insertion, 2 of the 3 Ss increased their alpha EEG activity. The role of alpha EEG and its relationship to pain control is discussed.

TL;DR: The species that experiences the widest seasonal temperature range proved capable of anticipatory adjustment to temperature while the two experiencing small seasonal changes showed only reactive adjustments and the species with the widest distribution showed the greatest ability to adapt to temperature extremes.
Abstract: Along the California coast there are three intertidal species of the genus Gibbonsia (G. elegans, G. metzi, G. montereyensis). These species have distinct but overlapping distributions. Collections were made seasonally from three areas. Each collection was divided into two groups — a critical thermal maximum and minimum were determined for one group and the other group was tested after a 3 week acclimation period. The three species showed genetically different adaptation abilities and these were correlated with species differences in latitudinal distributions. The species that experiences the widest seasonal temperature range proved capable of anticipatory adjustment to temperature while the two experiencing small seasonal changes showed only reactive adjustments. the species with the widest distribution showed the greatest ability to adapt to temperature extremes. After 1 week acclimation all three species demonstrated different mechanisms for heat and cold adaptation.

TL;DR: A study of the California Amanita flora revealed that only a few species fruit in the spring, two of the most common being A. calyptroderma Atk.
Abstract: Each year in western North America the greatest number of serious or fatal cases of mushroom poisoning occur in California (5). In the past most of these poisonings have been attributed to Amanita phalloides (Vaill. ex Fr.) Secr., a common species in California. The well known, deadly white Amanitas, such as A. bisporigera Atk., A. verna (Bull. ex Fr.) Pers. ex Vitt. and A. virosa Secr., are not common in western North America and, furthermore, have not been shown to occur in California (2, 9, 17, 19). Over the years fatal cases of mushroom poisoning have been reported in California during the late winter and spring months (1, 3), often after A. phalloides has finished fruiting for the season. A study of the California Amanita flora (2) revealed that only a few species fruit in the spring, two of the most common being A. calyptroderma Atk. &

TL;DR: Two loci account for all genetic variation resulting in difference in electrophoretic mobility in three hemoglobins (Hb1, Hb2, and HbX) in the hemolymph of the brine shrimp, and it is concluded that Hb 2 contains n α-polypeptides and n β-polyPEptides.
Abstract: Two loci account for all genetic variation resulting in difference in electrophoretic mobility in three hemoglobins (Hb1, Hb2, and HbX) in the hemolymph of the brine shrimp. Four α alleles and nine β alleles have been studied. In shrimps of all genotypes and in electrophoresis in media with varying degrees of molecular sieving, Hb2 is approximately equidistant from Hb1 and HbX. A shrimp heterozygous at both loci has a three-banded Hb1, a four-banded Hb2, and a three-banded HbX. We conclude that Hb2 contains n α-polypeptides and n β-polypeptides. Hb1 contains 2n α-polypeptides. HbX contains 2n β-polypeptides. During electrophoresis, the three native hemoglobins undergo reversible dissociation to n subunits. Subunits with the same charge reassemble to migrate as molecules of the same size as the native molecules. Although there is no evidence for an additional polypeptide in the three hemoglobins, we cannot exclude such a possibility. If it exists, it is under three constraints: (1) it must be present in equal amounts in each of the three hemoglobins; (2) it must have the same molecular weight as the α- and β-polypeptides; and (3) it must be free of genetic variation (detectable by electrophoresis).

TL;DR: In this paper, a test of the hypothesis that a subliminally presented emotionally charged picture will elicit a greater deflection of skin resistance than a neutral picture was conducted, and the mean deflection for emotional stimuli was significantly larger than for neutral stimuli as hypothesized.
Abstract: In a test of the hypothesis that a subliminally presented emotionally charged picture will elicit a greater deflection of skin resistance than a subliminally presented neutral picture, 24 subjects were stimulated subliminally at three standardized exposure times which were 3, 2, and 1 SDs shorter than their mean detection threshold. Mean deflections of skin resistance for 12 male and 12 female subjects, neutral and emotional stimuli, and the three exposure times were compared. The mean deflection for emotional stimuli was significantly larger than for neutral stimuli as hypothesized.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the House-Tree-Person test has potential validity as a nonverbal test of mental ability and that it can be scored efficiently and reliably by using a global, impressionistic method.
Abstract: The House-Tree-Person test and a verbal test of mental ability, the Basic Word Vocabulary Test, were administered to 23 male and 27 female, university undergraduates and to 27 boys and 38 girls in Grades 3 to 8. The drawings were given three separate and independent scorings by judges who computed intelligence scores according to the House-Person manual; rated them impressionistically on intelligence, using a forced-distribution method; or rated them impressionistically on creativity, using the same forced-distribution method. The three House-Tree-Person measures were highly intercorrelated for all groups of subjects. All three House-Tree-Person scores also correlated positively and significantly with vocabulary test scores for female university students, as did both Impressionistically derived House-Tree-Person scores for grade-school girls. Male students' and boys' vocabulary scores were unrelated to any of the House-Tree-Person scores. Results suggest that competence in graphic expression operates independently of verbal intelligence in males but validity as a nonverbal test of mental ability and that it can be scored efficiently and reliably by using a global, impressionistic method.

TL;DR: Electrophoretic mobilities of three hemoglobins (Hb1, Hb2, and Hb3) were studied in 15 populations of brine shrimps, finding no evidence of linkage of α and β loci with each other or with the locus (or loci) which governs Hb 3 or withThe nonhomologous portion of the sex chromosomes.
Abstract: Electrophoretic mobilities of three hemoglobins (Hb1, Hb2, and Hb3) were studied in 15 populations of brine shrimps. Genetic segregation data support the model that Hb2 contains n α-polypeptides and n β-polypeptides; Hb1 contains 2n α-polypeptides. Hb3 contains neither α- nor β-polypeptides. There is no evidence of linkage of α and β loci with each other or with the locus (or loci) which governs Hb3 or with the nonhomologous portion of the sex chromosomes. Hemoglobins of different populations may be hybridized in vitro by incubation at high temperature. Reversible dissociation to subunits which contain only one (α or β) polypeptide occurs at 40 C (for Hb1) and at 50 C (for Hb2).

TL;DR: The workshop for a ballerina is the formal ballet class which is faithfully attended every day throughout the dancing career, and it is in the classroom that the dancer acquires and refines basic technical skills as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: even holy endeavor which becomes an end in itself (Reyna, 1965: 7). An ideal stage performance combines both earthly and ethereal qualities, as the dancer affects a precarious balance between rigidity, control, precision, and strength, together with grace, poise, lyricism, and romantic style. The workshop for a ballerina is the formal ballet class which is faithfully attended every day throughout the dancing career. It is in the classroom that the dancer acquires and refines basic technical skills. Unlike other forms of dancing which stem from the natural movements of the human body, the premise of ballet is unnatural; it is contrived in order to achieve a very special style of movement. Ingredients of this technique include the turnout of the limbs, mastery of the five positions of the feet, and special placement and coordination of the body. Once these principles

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe how information regarding linguistic skills is obtained from a child's language sample and how instructional reading materials can be chosen in the context of the child's linguistic skills and reading capability.
Abstract: Individualized instruction is essentially the extreme of adjusting the task to be taught to the child's particular skills and deficiencies. In research terms, individualized instruction is validated by demonstrating that children possessing a certain characteristic are taught more effectively by one procedure than another. In a review of children's modality preference in relation to their reading acquisition (see Tarver & Dawson, January issue), research was unable to demonstrate subject by treatment interactions. This paper, also concerned with reading acquisition, suggests that the relevant distinctive variables may be the child's linguistic skills. The authors describe how information regarding linguistic skills is obtained from a child's language sample and how instructional reading materials can be chosen in the context of the child's linguistic skills and reading capability. While no validation data are included, the approach appears interesting and sensible and the reader's comment is solicited. — ...
