Abstract: Many emerging large-scale data science applications require searching large graphs distributed across multiple memories and processors. This paper presents a distributed breadth- first search (BFS) scheme that scales for random graphs with up to three billion vertices and 30 billion edges. Scalability was tested on IBM BlueGene/L with 32,768 nodes at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Scalability was obtained through a series of optimizations, in particular, those that ensure scalable use of memory. We use 2D (edge) partitioning of the graph instead of conventional 1D (vertex) partitioning to reduce communication overhead. For Poisson random graphs, we show that the expected size of the messages is scalable for both 2D and 1D partitionings. Finally, we have developed efficient collective communication functions for the 3D torus architecture of BlueGene/L that also take advantage of the structure in the problem. The performance and characteristics of the algorithm are measured and reported.

Abstract: The liquidus relations in the system YO1.5–BaO–CuOx in air in the compositional region near the superconducting oxide YBa2Cu3Ox were studied by differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and visual observation. The temperatures of 11 invariant points and the corresponding reactions were determined. YBa2Cu3Ox was found to melt incogruently at 1015 °C to Y2BaCuO5, which in turn melts incongruently to Y2O3 at 1270 °C. These reactions mean that preparing the superconducting phase by melting and rapid cooling will result in the presence of these two phases as well. The peritectic reaction YBa2Cu3Ox + CuO⇉Y2BaCuO5 + liquid at 940 °C accounts for the observation of partial melting, improved synthesis purity, and grain growth at temperatures of 950 °C. The determination of these invariant temperatures and reactions provide insight into optimal processing conditions.

Abstract: Laser scanning confocal microscopy can be used to image the pore structure of geologic materials in three dimensions at a resolution of 200 nanometers. The technique involves impregnation of the void space with an epoxy doped with a fluorochrome whose fluorescent wavelength matches the excitation wavelength. Optical sections with a thickness of less than 1 micrometer can be sliced from thick polished sections and combined to produce three-dimensional reconstructions. Application of the technique to rocks with porosities from 1 to 20 percent reveals the geometric complexity of the pore space. The technique can also be applied to other brittle solids such as ceramics.

Abstract: In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate a high-speed and power-efficient thermo-optic switch using an adiabatic bend with a directly integrated silicon heater to minimize the heat capacity and therein maximize the performance of the thermo-optic switch. A rapid, τ=2.4 μs thermal time constant and a low electrical power consumption of P(π)=12.7 mW/π-phase shift were demonstrated representing a P(π)τ product of only 30.5 mW·μs in a compact device with a phase shifter of only ~10 μm long.

Abstract: A new technique is developed for the merging and data fusion of two images. Two spatially registered images with differing spatial resolutions and color content are merged by combining multiresolution wavelet-decomposition components from each and then reconstructing the merged image by means of the inverse wavelet transform. The wavelet merger can employ a variety of wavelet bases, but in presentation of the concept, simple orthonormal sets—Haar and Daubechies wavelets—are explored. The wavelet technique is compared with the intensity–hue–saturation merging technique by means of multispectral and panchromatic test images. The results of the comparison show the wavelet merger performing better in combining and preserving spectral–spatial information for the test images.
