TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compare two new approximations with the usual x2 and F large sample approximings for the one-way Kruskal-Wallis test statistic.
Abstract: The Friedman (1937) test for the randomized complete block design is used to test the hypothesis of no treatment effect among k treatments with b blocks. Difficulty in determination of the size of the critical region for this hypothesis is com¬pounded by the facts that (1) the most recent extension of exact tables for the distribution of the test statistic by Odeh (1977) go up only to the case with k6 and b6, and (2) the usual chi-square approximation is grossly inaccurate for most commonly used combinations of (k,b). The purpose of this paper 2 is to compare two new approximations with the usual x2 and F large sample approximations. This work represents an extension to the two-way layout of work done earlier by the authors for the one-way Kruskal-Wallis test statistic.

TL;DR: A systematic, large-scale simulation study of granular media in two and three dimensions, investigating the rheology of cohesionless granular particles in inclined plane geometries, finds that a steady-state flow regime exists in which the energy input from gravity balances that dissipated from friction and inelastic collisions is found.
Abstract: We have performed a systematic, large-scale simulation study of granular media in two and three dimensions, investigating the rheology of cohesionless granular particles in inclined plane geometries, i.e., chute flows. We find that over a wide range of parameter space of interaction coefficients and inclination angles, a steady-state flow regime exists in which the energy input from gravity balances that dissipated from friction and inelastic collisions. In this regime, the bulk packing fraction (away from the top free surface and the bottom plate boundary) remains constant as a function of depth z, of the pile. The velocity profile in the direction of flow vx(z) scales with height of the pile H, according to vx(z) proportional to H(alpha), with alpha=1.52+/-0.05. However, the behavior of the normal stresses indicates that existing simple theories of granular flow do not capture all of the features evidenced in the simulations.

TL;DR: In this article, a chemical kinetic model was proposed to predict the growth of higher hydrocarbons in a lightly sooting C2H2/O2/Ar flame, and the predictions of the model compare favorably with the experimental results of Bastin et al. (20th Combustion Symposium).

TL;DR: The frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) technique as discussed by the authors was proposed to measure the spectrum of the signal pulse as a function of the delay between two input pulses and the resulting trace of intensity versus frequency and delay is related to the pulse's spectrogram a visually intuitive transform containing time and frequency information.
Abstract: The frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) technique for characterizing and displaying arbitrary femtosecond pulses is presented. The method is simple, general, broadband, and does not require a reference pulse. Using virtually any instantaneous nonlinear-optical effect, FROG involves measuring the spectrum of the signal pulse as a function of the delay between two input pulses. The resulting trace of intensity versus frequency and delay is related to the pulse's spectrogram a visually intuitive transform containing time and frequency information. It is proven using phase retrieval concepts that the FROG trace yields the full intensity I(t) and phase phi (t) of an arbitrary ultrashort pulse with no physically significant ambiguities. FROG appears to have temporal resolution limited only by the response of the nonlinear medium. The method is demonstrated by using self-diffraction through the electronic Kerr effect in BK-7 glass and 620-nm, linearly chirped, approximately 200-fs pulses of a few microjoules. >
