Abstract: A search for resonances and quantum black holes is performed using the dijet mass spectra measured in proton-proton collisions at s√=8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb^(−1). In a search for narrow resonances that couple to quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs, model-independent upper limits, at 95% confidence level, are obtained on the production cross section of resonances, with masses above 1.2 TeV. When interpreted in the context of specific models the limits exclude string resonances with masses below 5.0 TeV; excited quarks below 3.5 TeV; scalar diquarks below 4.7 TeV; W′ bosons below 1.9 TeV or between 2.0 and 2.2 TeV; Z′ bosons below 1.7 TeV; and Randall-Sundrum gravitons below 1.6 TeV. A separate search is conducted for narrow resonances that decay to final states including b quarks. The first exclusion limit is set for excited b quarks, with a lower mass limit between 1.2 and 1.6 TeV depending on their decay properties. Searches are also carried out for wide resonances, assuming for the first time width-to-mass ratios up to 30%, and for quantum black holes with a range of model parameters. The wide resonance search excludes axigluons and colorons with mass below 3.6 TeV, and color-octet scalars with mass below 2.5 TeV. Lower bounds between 5.0 and 6.3 TeV are set on the masses of quantum black holes.

Abstract: This work aimed to verify the influence of the under shading period in the parameters employed to evaluate Trema micrantha (crindiuva) seedling quality pattern. The research was carried out using a randomized design, with four replications per treatment and 88 plants per replication. Three evaluations were performed at 90, 120 and 150 days after emergence. The following treatments were used in the evaluation: Evaluation I, 45, 60, 75 and 90; Evaluation II, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 and Evaluation III, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135 and 150 days under shading with 48% of solar radiation retention, respectively. The morphological parameters of the seedlings, their relationships, and the Dickson quality index were evaluated. Seedlings developed under the longer shading periods presented higher shoot heights and leaf area but the lowest values for seedling quality, such as smaller stem diameter, root dry mass and the Dickson quality index. They also presented an increase in shoot height/stem diameter and shoot/root ratios. Period under shading did not affect significantly the parameters for leaf area, leaf dry mass, shoot and total. Seedlings showed better quality patterns at 120 days, when grown under 45 and 60 days under shading. The Dickson's quality index was the best and the most suitable parameter to evaluate the target seedling grown in a suspended nursery.

Abstract: Dijet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon center-of-mass energy of 276 TeV is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 150 μb−1 is analyzed Jets are reconstructed using combined information from tracking and calorimetry, using the anti-kT algorithm with R=03 The dijet momentum balance and angular correlations are studied as a function of collision centrality and leading jet transverse momentum For the most peripheral PbPb collisions, good agreement of the dijet momentum balance distributions with pp data and reference calculations at the same collision energy is found, while more central collisions show a strong imbalance of leading and subleading jet transverse momenta attributed to the jet-quenching effect The dijets in central collisions are found to be more unbalanced than the reference, for leading jet transverse momenta up to the highest values studied

Abstract: Ceramides contribute to the lipotoxicity that underlies diabetes, hepatic steatosis, and heart disease. By genetically engineering mice, we deleted the enzyme dihydroceramide desaturase 1 (DES1), which normally inserts a conserved double bond into the backbone of ceramides and other predominant sphingolipids. Ablation of DES1 from whole animals or tissue-specific deletion in the liver and/or adipose tissue resolved hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance in mice caused by leptin deficiency or obesogenic diets. Mechanistic studies revealed ceramide actions that promoted lipid uptake and storage and impaired glucose utilization, none of which could be recapitulated by (dihydro)ceramides that lacked the critical double bond. These studies suggest that inhibition of DES1 may provide a means of treating hepatic steatosis and metabolic disorders.
