TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the role of capital in financial institutions, why it is important, how market-generated capital "requiremenents" differ from regulatory requirments and the form that regulatory requirements should take.
Abstract: This introductory article examines the role of capital in financial institutions — why it is important, how market-generated capital ‘requiremenents’ differ from regulatory requirments and the form that regulatory requirements should take. Along the way, we examine historical trends in bank capital, problems in measuring capital, and some possible unintended consequences of capital requirements. Within this framework, we evaluate how the contributions to this special issue advance the literature and suggest topics for future research.

TL;DR: An overview of 297 assessment methods for the status of European surface waters is presented, based on a questionnaire survey addressing authorities in all countries implementing the WFD, and the strength of relationships differed significantly between organism groups and water categories.

TL;DR: Norms are provided for verbal and visuo-spatial immediate memory span, two tasks widely used in the clinical assessment of short-term memory and its neurological disorders, which show a major decrement after the late sixties and is affected by educational level.
Abstract: Norms are provided for verbal and visuo-spatial immediate memory span, two tasks widely used in the clinical assessment of short-term memory and its neurological disorders. Data have been collected from 1355 male and female adult subjects, with various educational backgrounds and a 20–99 years age range. Span shows a major decrement after the late sixties and is affected by educational level. Male subjects score better on the spatial task. Data collected from 1112 male and female children, 4-to-10 year-old, show that span increases with age and boys score better on the spatial test.

TL;DR: The final results of the search for the lepton flavour violating decay were presented in this paper, based on the full dataset collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009-2013.
Abstract: The final results of the search for the lepton flavour violating decay $$\mathrm {\mu }^+ \rightarrow \mathrm {e}^+ \mathrm {\gamma }$$ based on the full dataset collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009–2013 and totalling $$7.5\times 10^{14}$$ stopped muons on target are presented. No significant excess of events is observed in the dataset with respect to the expected background and a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of $$ \mathcal{B} (\mu ^+ \rightarrow \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma ) < 4.2 \times 10^{-13}$$ (90 % confidence level) is established, which represents the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.

TL;DR: The potential of particle swarm optimization for solving various kinds of optimization problems in chemometrics is shown through an extensive description of the algorithm (highlighting the importance of the proper choice of its metaparameters) and by means of selected worked examples in the fields of signal warping, estimation robust PCA solutions and variable selection.
