Health Science Students as PPE Coaches in the Emergency Department - a Pandemic Pilot Project.

Abstract: PPE is an integral part of reducing transmission of COVID-19. We assessed a 5-week pilot project of utilising health science student volunteers as PPE coaches in the adult and paediatric emergency department (ED) during the pandemic. PPE coaches were provided with training, PPE checklist, area for written observations, and feedback surveys. Overall, correct PPE use improved over time. Coaches felt safe, that training was adequate, and part of the team. Factors that contributed to project effectiveness included institutional support, role clarification, and continuous feedback from staff. Our findings support the utilisation of students in IPC projects.

Pigmented apocrine hamartoma: A distinct and uncommon pigmented lesion with dendritic melanocytes and appraisal of terminology.

Abstract: A 20-year-old female presented to a gynecologist with an irregular, darkly pigmented, vulvar lesion. Histopathologic sections of a biopsy specimen showed cystically dilated glands with apical snouts, pigmented secretion, and numerous dendritic melanocytes. The lesion was diagnosed as a pigmented apocrine hamartoma of the vulva. We report the fifth case of this uncommonly encountered entity and discuss the conflicting terminology in the literature of this rare, pigmented lesion.

Patient perspectives from the multi-disciplinary chronic pain clinic: a qualitative study.

Abstract: Aim: The chronic pain clinic (CPC) is a multi-disciplinary program that incorporates pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods, including First Nations healing strategies, to manage pain, improve functioning and reduce opioid misuse among patients with chronic pain in Regina, Canada. Materials & methods: The care experiences of ten current clients were explored using a narrative interview approach. Results: The CPC provides high-quality and safe care for effective chronic pain management. Clients noted pain reduction and improvements in sleep, mobility, functionality, and mood. First Nation clients emphasized the importance of traditional healing strategies. Conclusion: This unique comprehensive multi-modal approach which incorporates First Nations healing strategies is effective in supporting the unique needs of local clients.
