TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an extensive overview on the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) modified nanomaterials for both experimental analysis and point-of-care testing of pesticides.
Abstract: Pesticides have been widely used in agricultural and industrial production to prevent pests. So, sensing pesticides with high selectivity and sensitivity level plays a significant role in food safety management. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) based sensors overcome the current restriction of traditional detection approaches and offer great potential for efficient, low-cost and low detection limit using smart miniaturized equipment. But some drawbacks could come from the lack of electrocatalytic activity and conductivity of MIPs that restrict their utilization in the sensing field. The integration of NPs with MIPs has opened new ways for rapid screening and monitoring of pesticide residues due to their excellent benefits in the designing of novel sensor chip. In this review, firstly we have highlighted and summarized the current research progresses of MIP-based sensors. Secondly, we provide an extensive overview on the MIPs modified nanomaterials for both experimental analysis and point-of-care testing of pesticides.

TL;DR: The main cardiac effects of methadone include prolongation of QT interval and torsade de pointes and changes in QT dispersion, pathological U waves, Taku-Tsubo syndrome, Brugada-like syndrome, and coronary artery diseases.
Abstract: Methadone is one of the most popular synthetic opioids in the world with some favorable properties making it useful both in the treatment of moderate to severe pain and for opioid addiction. Increased use of methadone has resulted in an increased prevalence of its toxicity, one aspect of which is cardiotoxicity. In this paper, we review the effects of methadone on the heart as well as cardiac concerns in some special situations such as pregnancy and childhood. Methods: We searched for the terms methadone, toxicity, poisoning, cardiotoxicity, heart, dysrhythmia, arrhythmia, QT interval prolongation, torsade de pointes, and Electrocardiogram (ECG) in bibliographical databases including TUMS digital library, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. This review includes relevant articles published between 2000 and 2013. The main cardiac effects of methadone include prolongation of QT interval and torsade de pointes. Other effects include changes in QT dispersion, pathological U waves, Taku-Tsubo syndrome (stress cardiomyopathy), Brugada-like syndrome, and coronary artery diseases. The aim of this paper is to inform physicians and health care staff about these adverse effects. Effectiveness of methadone in the treatment of pain and addiction should be weighed against these adverse effects and physicians should consider the ways to lessen such undesirable effects. This article presents some recommendations to prevent heart toxicity in methadone users.

TL;DR: The importance of NO in the pathogenesis of TB, the diagnostic use of exhaled and urinary NO in Mtb infection and the potential of NO-based treatments are discussed.
Abstract: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), is globally known as one of the most important human pathogens. Mtb is estimated to infect nearly one third of the world's population with many subjects having a latent infection. Thus, from an estimated 2 billion people infected with Mtb, less than 10% may develop symptomatic TB. This indicates that the host immune system may constrain pathogen replication in most infected individuals. On entering the lungs of the host, Mtb initially encounters resident alveolar macrophages which can engulf and subsequently eliminate intracellular microbes via a plethora of bactericidal mechanisms including the generation of free radicals such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Nitric oxide (NO), a key anti-mycobacterial molecule, is detected in the exhaled breath of patients infected with Mtb. Recent knowledge regarding the regulatory role of NO in airway function and Mtb proliferation paves the way of exploiting the beneficial effects of this molecule for the treatment of airway diseases. Here, we discuss the importance of NO in the pathogenesis of TB, the diagnostic use of exhaled and urinary NO in Mtb infection and the potential of NO-based treatments.

TL;DR: In this review, several strategies have been discussed for combating bacterial biofilms to improve healthcare, food safety, and industrial process.
Abstract: Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that are formed on and attached to living or nonliving surfaces and are surrounded by an extracellular polymeric material. Biofilm formation enjoys several advantages over the pathogens in the colonization process of medical devices and patients' organs. Unlike planktonic cells, biofilms have high intrinsic resistance to antibiotics and sanitizers, and overcoming them is a significant problematic challenge in the medical and food industries. There are no approved treatments to specifically target biofilms. Thus, it is required to study and present innovative and effective methods to combat a bacterial biofilm. In this review, several strategies have been discussed for combating bacterial biofilms to improve healthcare, food safety, and industrial process.
