TL;DR: The current paper comprehensively reviews the different health effects of probiotics on the skin and indicates that probiotics have great potential in preventing and treating the skin diseases including eczema, atopic dermatitis, acne, and allergic inflammation.
Abstract: Skin is the largest organ of the body and is constantly exposed to physical, chemical, bacterial, and fungal challenges. It is well known that probiotics are helpful for specific disorders and different clinical studies have indicated that probiotics have special effects in cutaneous apparatus directly or indirectly that can be considerable from versatile aspects. Probiotic bacteriotherapy can have great potential in preventing and treating the skin diseases including eczema, atopic dermatitis, acne, and allergic inflammation or in skin hypersensitivity, UV-induced skin damage, wound protection, and as a cosmetic product. The current paper comprehensively reviews the different health effects of probiotics on the skin.

TL;DR: This retrospective observational case series evaluated the outcomes of visual disturbances in patients with methanol poisoning hospitalized in Loghman Hakim and Hazrat Rasoul Akram hospitals between March 2003 and October 2009 and found no association existed between the visual disturbance and abnormal neurological and CT findings.
Abstract: Introduction. Methanol poisoning and toxic optic neuropathy is still seen worldwide. Little attention has been paid to the persistent visual disturbances following methanol poisoning. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of visual disturbances in methanol-poisoned patients referred to us with visual disturbances. Methods. This retrospective observational case series evaluated the outcomes of visual disturbances in patients with methanol poisoning hospitalized in Loghman Hakim and Hazrat Rasoul Akram hospitals between March 2003 and October 2009. Medical charts were evaluated for age, gender, time between consumption and hospital presentation, gastrointestinal symptoms, abnormal neurological findings at presentation and during hospital admission, arterial blood gas results, treatment modalities, history of chronic diseases, and status of vision at presentation and discharge from the hospital. The patients or their relatives were contacted 1 year after the admission date of the last patient and questioned abou...

TL;DR: In developing countries, where diagnostic resources are limited, use of active case finding and developing national guidelines can help in the management of large outbreaks of methanol poisonings.
Abstract: Background There are no guidelines addressing the public health aspects of methanol poisoning during larger outbreaks. The current study was done to discuss the role of active case finding and a national guideline that organizes all available resources according to a triage strategy in the successful management of a methanol mass poisoning in Rafsanjan, Iran, in May 2013. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed reviewing the outbreak Emergency Operation Center files. The objectives were to describe the characteristics, management and outcome of a methanol outbreak using Active Case Finding to trace the victims. Results A total of 694 patients presented to emergency departments in Rafsanjan after public announcement of the outbreak between 29th May and 3rd June 2013. The announcement was mainly performed via short message service (SMS) and local radio broadcasting. A total of 361 cases were observed and managed in Rafsanjan and 333 were transferred to othercities. Seventy-five and 100 patients underwent hemodialysis (HD), retrospectively. The main indication for HD was refractory metabolic acidosis. Eight patients expired due to the intoxication. Except for the deceased cases, no serum methanol level was available.

TL;DR: In this mini-review, a multitude of studies on anti-bacterial effects of melittin against planktonic and biofilm-embedded bacteria are summarized and several investigations regarding synergistic effects betweenmelittin and antibiotics are described.
Abstract: The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, dubbed superbugs, together with relative stagnation in developing efficient antibiotics has led to enormous health and economic problems, necessitating the need for discovering and developing novel antimicrobial agents. In this respect, animal venoms represent a rich repertoire of pharmacologically active components. As a major component in the venom of European honeybee Apis mellifera, melittin has a great potential in medical applications. In this mini-review, we summarize a multitude of studies on anti-bacterial effects of melittin against planktonic and biofilm-embedded bacteria. Several investigations regarding synergistic effects between melittin and antibiotics were also described. On the whole, the properties of melittin can open up new horizons in a range of biomedical areas, from agriculture to veterinary and clinical microbiology.
