TL;DR: This work proposes the fabrication of a Si-based composite where Si porous nanospheres (Si p- NSs) are tightly wrapped by Ti3C2Tx (Tx stands for the surface groups such as -OH, -F) MXene nanosheets (TNSs) through an interfacial assembly strategy to develop advanced Si- based anode materials with desirable properties for high-performance LIBs.
Abstract: Exploring Si-based anode materials with high electrical conductivity and electrode stability is crucial for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we propose the fabrication of a Si-based composite where Si porous nanospheres (Si p-NSs) are tightly wrapped by Ti3C2Tx (Tx stands for the surface groups such as -OH, -F) MXene nanosheets (TNSs) through an interfacial assembly strategy. The TNSs as a conductive and robust tight of the Si p-NSs can effectively improve electron transport and electrode stability, as revealed by substantial characterizations and mechanical simulations. Moreover, the TNSs with rich surface groups enable strong interfacial interactions with the Si p-NS component and a pseudocapacitive behavior, beneficial for fast and stable lithium storage. Consequently, the Si p-NS@TNSs electrode with a high Si content of 85.6% exhibits significantly enhanced battery performance compared with the Si p-NSs electrode such as high reversible capacity (1154 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1), long cycling stability (up to 2000 cycles with a 0.026% capacity decay rate per cycle), and excellent rate performances. Notably, the Si p-NS@TNSs electrode-based LIB full cell delivers a high energy uptake of 405 Wh kg-1, many-times higher than that of the Si p-NSs full cell. This work offers a strategy to develop advanced Si-based anode materials with desirable properties for high-performance LIBs.

TL;DR: The specifically synthesized and selected carbon dots of relatively high fluorescence quantum yields were evaluated in their fluorescence labeling of cells, and some significant selectivity of the stem cells toward surface functionalities of the carbon dots is suggested.
Abstract: The specifically synthesized and selected carbon dots of relatively high fluorescence quantum yields were evaluated in their fluorescence labeling of cells. For the cancer cell lines, the cellular uptake of the carbon dots was generally efficient, resulting in the labeling of the cells with bright fluorescence emissions for both one- and two-photon excitations from predominantly the cell membrane and cytoplasm. In the exploration on labeling the live stem cells, the cellular uptake of the carbon dots was relatively less efficient, though fluorescence emissions could still be adequately detected in the labeled cells, with the emissions again predominantly from the cell membrane and cytoplasm. This combined with the observed more efficient internalization of the same carbon dots by the fixed stem cells might suggest some significant selectivity of the stem cells toward surface functionalities of the carbon dots. The needs and possible strategies for more systematic and comparative studies on the fluorescence labeling of different cells, including especially live stem cells, by carbon dots as a new class of brightly fluorescent probes are discussed.

TL;DR: The results suggest that formononetin inhibited breast cancer cell migration and invasion by reducing the expression of M MP-2 and MMP-9 through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.
Abstract: Formononetin is a naturally existing isoflavone, which can be found in the roots of Astragalus membranaceus, Trifolium pratense, Glycyrrhiza glabra, and Pueraria lobata. It was found to be associated with inhibition of cell proliferation and cell cycle progression, as well as induction of apoptosis in various cancer cell lines. However, the effect of formononetin on breast cancer cell metastasis remains unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of formononetin on the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231 and 4T1 in vitro and in vivo. Our data demonstrated that formononetin did not effectively inhibit the cell viability of MDA-MB-231 and 4T1 in 24 h with the concentration lower than 160 μmol/l. When treated with nontoxic concentration of formononetin, the migration and invasion of MDA-MB-231 and 4T1 cells were markedly suppressed by wound healing assay, chamber invasion assay, and in vivo mouse metastasis model. In vitro, formononetin reduced the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9 and increased the expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and TIMP-2. Furthermore, the immunofluorescence and immunoblotting assays indicated that formononetin was very effective in suppressing the phosphorylation of Akt and PI3K. Collectively, these results suggest that formononetin inhibited breast cancer cell migration and invasion by reducing the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. These findings demonstrate a potentially new therapeutic strategy of formononetin as anti-invasive agent for breast cancer.

TL;DR: The low value of RSD and the high EF of SERS signals indicate that the as-prepared substrate may be promising for highly sensitive and uniform SERS detection, and Finite-difference time-domain simulations suggest that the enhanced electric field originates from the narrow gap, which agrees well with the experimental results.
Abstract: Applicable surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates require high enhancement factor (EF), excellent spatial reproducibility, and low-cost fabrication method on a large area. Although several SERS substrates with high EF and relative standard deviation (RSD) of signal less than 5% were reported, reliable fabrication for large area SERS substrates with both high sensitivity and high reproducibility via low-cost routes remains a challenge. Here, we report a facile and cost-effective fabrication process for large-scale SERS substrate with Ag inter-nanoparticle (NP) gaps of 5 nm based on ultrathin alumina mask (UTAM) surface pattern technique. Such closely packed Ag NP arrays with high density of electromagnetic field enhancement (“hot spots”) on large area exhibit high SERS activity and excellent reproducibility, simultaneously. Rhodamine 6G molecules with concentration of 1 × 10–7 M are used to determine the SERS performance, and an EF of ∼109 is obtained. It should be noted that we obtain ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors applied Bayesian networks to prioritize the factors that influence hazardous material (Hazmat) transportation accidents, and found that the three most influential factors in Hazmat transportation accidents were human factors, the transport vehicle and facilities, and packing and loading of the Hazmat.
