TL;DR: A diverse library of substituted furopyridinediones (12a–v) was designed as potential inhibitors of α-glucosidase, and 12p transpired to be the lead candidate with an IC50 of 0.24 μM, indicating that it is a mixed inhibitor.
Abstract: The global preponderance of diabetes mellitus has prompted the medical community to opt for various therapeutic solutions to curb this menace. One of the means involved controlling the post prandial hyperglycemia. α-Glucosidase inhibitors are known to be excellent agents for controlling postprandial hyperglycemia. Different classes of α-glucosidase inhibitors have been discovered. In this context, a diverse library of substituted furopyridinediones (12a–v) was designed as potential inhibitors of α-glucosidase, using an intuitive scaffold hopping approach (which was further rationalized by molecular docking). They were synthesized in one step via an aldol condensation reaction of the furopyridinedione scaffold and appropriate aldehydes. The compounds were screened against α-glucosidase using acarbose as the reference inhibitor. Among the screened compounds, 12p transpired to be the lead candidate with an IC50 of 0.24 μM. Lineweaver–Burke analysis of 12p indicated that it is a mixed inhibitor. X-ray crystallography of 12p further confirmed its structure. Molecular modelling studies and molecular dynamic simulation experiments were performed against a homology model of α-glucosidase to observe the binding interaction of 12p with the enzymes.

TL;DR: The authors explored the relationship between management practices and manufacturing performance, based on evidence from India and Malaysia, two countries from the cultural area of Southern Asia, and found that the use of HPWPs in Indian culture led to better manufacturing performance than the use in Malaysian culture.
Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between management practices and manufacturing performance, based on evidence from India and Malaysia – two countries from the cultural area of Southern Asia. Design/methodology/approach The authors theorized by drawing not only on the strategic human resource management (SHRM) literature but also on cross-cultural research. A total of 233 leaders constituted this study’s sample: 96 production leaders from 16 Indian companies and 137 production leaders from 16 Malaysian companies participated in the survey. Findings Some of the high-performance work practices (HPWPs) were effective across India and Malaysia. The use of HPWPs in Indian culture led to better manufacturing performance than the use of HPWPs in Malaysian culture. Research limitations/implications This study did not measure national culture itself but instead used a dummy-coded variable of country as its proxy. Not only can national culture explain varieties in management practices including HPWPs, but it can also interact with these practices to affect performance. Practical implications Indian and Malaysian managers can learn about their management practices from this, and they can learn about benefits they might bring to their workplaces if they manage through the use of HPWPs. Originality/value The authors’ research provides insight into the capability of national culture to moderate the relationship between HPWPs and manufacturing performance, even among two countries situated in the same region of Southern Asia.

TL;DR: Alginate/montmorillonite composite macroporous hydrogels (cryogels) with high porosity, mechanical elasticity, and high adsorption yield for methylene blue (MB) were generated by the one-step cryogelation technique.
Abstract: Currently, macroporous hydrogels have been receiving attention in wastewater treatment due to their unique structures. As a natural polymer, alginate is used to remove cationic dyes due to its sustainable features such as abundance, low cost, processability, and being environmentally friendly. Herein, alginate/montmorillonite composite macroporous hydrogels (cryogels) with high porosity, mechanical elasticity, and high adsorption yield for methylene blue (MB) were generated by the one-step cryogelation technique. These cryogels were synthesized by adding montmorillonite into gel precursor, followed by chemical cross-linking employing carbodiimide chemistry in a frozen state. The as-prepared adsorbents were analyzed by FT-IR, SEM, gel fraction, swelling, uniaxial compression, and MB adsorption tests. The results indicated that alginate/montmorillonite cryogels exhibited high gelation yield (up to 80%), colossal water uptake capacity, elasticity, and effective dye adsorption capacity (93.7%). Maximum adsorption capacity against MB was 559.94 mg g−1 by linear regression of Langmuir model onto experimental data. The Pseudo-Second-Order model was fitted better onto kinetic data compared to the Pseudo-First-Order model. Improved porosity and mechanical elasticity yielding enhanced dye removal capacity make them highly potential alternative adsorbents compared to available alginate/montmorillonite materials for MB removal.

TL;DR: In this article, a novel ultrawideband (UWB) bandpass filter based on broadside coupled microstrip-to-coplanar waveguide (CPW) transition is proposed.
Abstract: A novel ultrawideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) based on broadside coupled microstrip-to-coplanar waveguide (CPW) transition is proposed. The proposed structure consists of open circuited microstrip lines on the top arranged in back-to-back fashion and electromagnetically coupled to a short circuited CPW in the ground via the dielectric. This arrangement generates a smooth UWB having passband insertion loss <0.22 dB in simulation, and two transmission zeros at the lower and upper passband/stopband edges which enhances selectivity. To validate the theory a prototype is fabricated and its measured response tested against simulated data. The simulation and measured response are found to be in good agreement with each other. The proposed structure is quite compact in size measuring only 14.8 × 9.6 mm2. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 58:289–293, 2016
