TL;DR: In this article, a TiO2-Sb/polytetrafluroethylene resin (FR)-PbO2 electrode was developed based on nanotubes and the performance of the electrode on an antibiotic, ofloxacin, was evaluated.
Abstract: Electrochemical oxidation has been proposed for the destruction of organic contaminants; however, this process is hampered by low oxidation efficiency and high energy cost. Accordingly, we developed a TiO2-based SnO2-Sb/polytetrafluroethylene resin (FR)-PbO2 electrode that was based on TiO2 nanotubes. We tested the performance of the electrode on an antibiotic, ofloxacin, and identified the major pathway of ofloxacin oxidation. We found growing TiO2 nanotubes on Ti material increased current efficiency, and the electrical efficiency per order (EE/O, kWh/m3) for oxidation was decreased by 16.2%. Our electrode requires a large overpotential before electrons flow, which minimizes oxygen evolution, reduces hydrogen peroxide and ozone generation, and favors hydroxyl radicals (HO ) production. We found the electron efficiency (EE) during oxidation was as high as 88.45%. In other words, 88.45% of the electrons that flow out of the electrode cause oxidation. The effects of current density, initial concentration, pH value and electrolyte concentration were investigated. A differential column batch reactor (DCBR) was used to simulate the performance of continuous plug flow reactor and we found that the destruction of ofloxacin followed pseudo-first order model. We also evaluated the impact of mass transfer on electrochemical performance. The effects of fluid velocity and electrode spacing on oxidation rate were evaluated by determining the mass transfer coefficient and the effectiveness factor Ω (between 0 and 1). Our experiments and calculations indicated that the mass transfer reduced oxidation rate by more than 55% (Ω

TL;DR: In this article, a photoactive MOF PCN-222 is modified with phosphono-and amino groups that can capture U(VI) from solution, and the photo-induced electrons from the MOF host can efficiently reduce U (VI) pre-enriched in MOF.
Abstract: Uranium enrichment is perhaps the most critical chemical process throughout the nuclear fuel cycle including uranium mining, uranium extraction from seawater, used fuel reprocessing and disposal, and environmental contamination remediation. New uranium extraction technology is still highly desirable at current stage, although a variety of extraction methods have been established and developed in the past several decades but all with clear demerits. Herein we present a new uranium extraction strategy with combined ligand complexation and photocatalytic reduction based on postsynthetically functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The highly robust and photoactive MOF PCN-222 is modified with phosphono- and amino groups that can capture U(VI) from solution. Upon visible light irradiation, the photo-induced electrons from the MOF host can efficiently reduce U(VI) pre-enriched in MOF, affording neutral uranium species that evacuate the MOF structure and regenerating the active site readily for capturing additional U(VI). This auto-recycled process offers an ultrahigh uranium extraction capacity not limited by the number of adsorption sites and more importantly an extra uranium uptake selectivity over these non-redox-active competing metal cations, and can be utilized for uranium separation over extremely wide uranium concentrations and pH ranges, showing a powerful application potential.

TL;DR: In this article, a solid-state mechanochemical pulverization process was used to prepare a polypropylene (PP)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite powder, which was then melt-mixed with a twin-roll masticator to obtain a PP/CNT composite.
Abstract: A solid-state mechanochemical pulverization process, that is, pan milling, was used to prepare a polypropylene (PP)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite powder. The composite powder was then melt-mixed with a twin-roll masticator to obtain a PP/CNT composite. The morphology of the PP/CNT powder and the PP/CNT composite was investigated. The crystallization and mechanical properties of the latter were also studied. After 20 milling cycles (ca. 60 min), the average diameter of PP/3 wt % CNT composite powder particles was a few micrometers. The length of the CNTs was reduced from a few micrometers to 0.4–0.5 μm. The CNTs became straighter and more uniform in length. The effects of incorporating the CNTs into PP were as follows: (1) the crystallization rate and temperature of PP increased, (2) a strong b-plane orientation of PP was induced, and (3) the Young's modulus and yield strength of PP increased. Interfacial adhesion between PP and the CNTs was improved by the mechanical action of the solid-state pulverization process used, which favored the dispersion of the CNTs into PP. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
