Abstract: This study extends theory and research by differentiating between routine, noncreative performance and 2 distinct types of creativity: radical and incremental. We also use a sensemaking perspective to examine the interplay of social and personal factors that may influence a person's engagement in a certain level of creative action versus routine, noncreative work. Results demonstrate that willingness to take risks, resources for creativity, and career commitment are associated primarily with radical creativity; that the presence of creative coworkers and organizational identification are associated with incremental creativity ; and that conformity and organizational identification are linked with routine performance. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Abstract: This study compares the application of two variable selection methods in partial least squares regression (PLSR), the variable importance in projection (VIP) method and the selectivity ratio (SR) method. For this purpose, three different data sets were analysed: (a) physiochemical water quality parameters related to sensorial data, (b) gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) chemical (organic compound) profiles from fossil sea sediment samples related to sea surface temperature (SST) changes, and (c) exposed genes of Daphnia magna female samples related to their total offspring production. Correlation coefficients (r), levels of significance (p-value) and interpretation of the underlying experimental phenomena allowed the discussion about the best approach for variable selection in each case. The comparison of the two variable selection methods in the first water quality data set showed that the SR method is more accurate for sensorial prediction. For the climate data set, when raw total ion current (TIC) GC-MS chromatograms were considered, variables selected using the VIP method were easier to interpret compared with those selected by the SR method. However, when only some chromatographic peak areas (concentrations) were considered, the SR method was more efficient for prediction, and the VIP method selected the most relevant variables for the interpretation of SST changes. Finally, for the transcriptomic data set, the SR method was found again to be more reliable for prediction purposes. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: We present spatial coherence measurements of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light generated through the process of high-harmonic up-conversion of a femtosecond laser. With a phase-matched hollow-fiber geometry, the generated beam was found to exhibit essentially full spatial coherence. The coherence of this laser-like EUV source was shown by recording Gabor holograms of small objects. This work demonstrates the capability to perform EUV holography with a tabletop experimental setup. Such an EUV source, with low divergence and high spatial coherence, can be used for experiments involving high-precision metrology, inspection of optical components for EUV lithography, and microscopy and holography with nanometer resolution. Furthermore, the short time duration of the EUV radiation (a few femtoseconds) will enable EUV microscopy and holography to be performed with ultrahigh time resolution.

Abstract: We take advantage of nonlinear properties associated with ?(3) tensor elements in BaF2 cubic crystal to improve the temporal contrast of femtosecond laser pulses. The technique presented is based on cross-polarized wave (XPW) generation. We have obtained a transmission efficiency of 10% and 10?10 contrast with an input pulse in the millijoule range. This filter does not affect the spectral shape or the phase of the cleaned pulse. It also acts as an efficient spatial filter. In this method the contrast enhancement is limited only by the extinction ratio of the polarization discrimination device.

Abstract: Using chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence many aspects of the photosynthetic apparatus can be studied, both in vitro and, noninvasively, in vivo. Complementary techniques can help to interpret changes in the Chl a fluorescence kinetics. Kalaji et al. (Photosynth Res 122:121–158, 2014a) addressed several questions about instruments, methods and applications based on Chl a fluorescence. Here, additional Chl a fluorescence-related topics are discussed again in a question and answer format. Examples are the effect of connectivity on photochemical quenching, the correction of F V /F M values for PSI fluorescence, the energy partitioning concept, the interpretation of the complementary area, probing the donor side of PSII, the assignment of bands of 77 K fluorescence emission spectra to fluorescence emitters, the relationship between prompt and delayed fluorescence, potential problems when sampling tree canopies, the use of fluorescence parameters in QTL studies, the use of Chl a fluorescence in biosensor applications and the application of neural network approaches for the analysis of fluorescence measurements. The answers draw on knowledge from different Chl a fluorescence analysis domains, yielding in several cases new insights.
