TL;DR: In this article, a systematic SU(2) approach for composite sequences of pulses with smooth temporal shapes that produce high-fidelity two-state excitation profiles is presented. But this approach is not suitable for the application of composite pulses to quantum control and quantum information processing with short and ultrashort laser pulses.
Abstract: We present a systematic SU(2) approach for construction of composite sequences of pulses with smooth temporal shapes that produce high-fidelity two-state excitation profiles. This makes possible the application of composite pulses to quantum control and quantum information processing with short and ultrashort laser pulses. We present an exact analytic formula for the composite phases for arbitrarily accurate broadband pulses and examples of narrowband, passband, and fractional-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ pulses as well as composite pulses with detuning compensation.

TL;DR: The CLEF-2018 CheckThat! Lab on Automatic Identification and Verification of Political Claims as mentioned in this paper focused on the check-worthiness task, where the task asks to predict which claims in a political debate should be prioritized for fact-checking.
Abstract: We present an overview of the CLEF-2018 CheckThat! Lab on Automatic Identification and Verification of Political Claims, with focus on Task 1: Check-Worthiness. The task asks to predict which claims in a political debate should be prioritized for fact-checking. In particular, given a debate or a political speech, the goal was to produce a ranked list of its sentences based on their worthiness for fact checking. We offered the task in both English and Arabic, based on debates from the 2016 US Presidential Campaign, as well as on some speeches during and after the campaign. A total of 30 teams registered to participate in the Lab and seven teams actually submitted systems for Task~1. The most successful approaches used by the participants relied on recurrent and multi-layer neural networks, as well as on combinations of distributional representations, on matchings claims' vocabulary against lexicons, and on measures of syntactic dependency. The best systems achieved mean average precision of 0.18 and 0.15 on the English and on the Arabic test datasets, respectively. This leaves large room for further improvement, and thus we release all datasets and the scoring scripts, which should enable further research in check-worthiness estimation.

TL;DR: The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) is under construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) to demonstrate the principle of ionization cooling as a technique for the reduction of the phase-space volume occupied by a muon beam as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE), which is under construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), will demonstrate the principle of ionization cooling as a technique for the reduction of the phase-space volume occupied by a muon beam. Ionization cooling channels are required for the Neutrino Factory and the Muon Collider. MICE will evaluate in detail the performance of a single lattice cell of the Feasibility Study 2 cooling channel. The MICE Muon Beam has been constructed at the ISIS synchrotron at RAL, and in MICE Step I, it has been characterized using the MICE beam-instrumentation system. In this paper, the MICE Muon Beam and beam-line instrumentation are described. The muon rate is presented as a function of the beam loss generated by the MICE target dipping into the ISIS proton beam. For a 1 V signal from the ISIS beam-loss monitors downstream of our target we obtain a 30 KHz instantaneous muon rate, with a neglible pion contamination in the beam.

TL;DR: An integrated overview of the possible avenues for enhancing the biosynthesis of high-value marketable molecules produced by plant in vitro systems are presented, including metabolic engineering and CRISPR/Cas9 technology for the regulation of plant metabolism through overexpression/repression of single or multiple structural genes or transcriptional factors.
Abstract: For centuries plants have been intensively utilized as reliable sources of food, flavoring, agrochemical and pharmaceutical ingredients. However, plant natural habitats are being rapidly lost due t...

TL;DR: In this article, the structure of the slowly rotating neutron stars in R-squared gravity with Lagrangian f(R) = R + aR2, where a is a parameter.
Abstract: In the present paper we investigate self-consistently slowly rotating neutron and strange stars in R-squared gravity with Lagrangian f(R) = R + aR2, where a is a parameter. For this purpose we first derive the equations describing the structure of the slowly rotating compact stars in f(R)-gravity and then simultaneously solve numerically the exterior and the interior problem. The structure of the slowly rotating neutron stars is studied for two different hadronic equations of state and a strange matter equation of state. The moment of inertia and its dependence on the stellar mass and the R-squared gravity parameter a is also examined in details. The numerical results show that the neutron star moment of inertia can be up to 30% larger compared to the corresponding general relativistic models. This is much higher than the change in the maximum mass induced by R-squared gravity and is beyond the EOS uncertainty. In this way the future observations of the moment of inertia of compact stars could allow us to distinguish between general relativity and f(R) gravity, and more generally to test the strong field regime of gravity.
