TL;DR: In this paper, a program selection screen as a multi-screen is formed from nine reduced screens reduced to one third in the horizontal and vertical directions from screens of programs broadcast on different broadcasting channels.
Abstract: The invention provides an electrical program guide system and method by which a desired program can be rapidly selected directly from among a large number of programs with certainty. A program selection screen as a multi-screen is formed from nine reduced screens reduced to one third in the horizontal and vertical directions from screens of programs broadcast on different broadcasting channels. A plurality of such program selection screens are transmitted to a reception side. On the reception side, the program selection screens are stored into a virtual frame memory so that reduced screens of them may make a single virtual screen. From among the reduced screens of the virtual frame, desired 3×3 reduced screens are read out and displayed on a multi-screen of full motion. A viewer finds and directly selects a desired program from within the 3×3 reduced screens of full motion displayed as the multi-screen. The array of the reduced screens can be automatically changed, based on program enjoyment histories, so that a reduced screen of a program enjoyed frequently by the viewer is disposed at a position which facilitates selection by the viewer such as the upper left position of the screen. The array may be customized such that it is changed to an arbitrary array based on a desire of the viewer.

Abstract: A charging method for use in an interactive on-line service where a server and terminals of users are mutually connected by a transmission medium, where a predetermined service is provided from the server to the terminals via the transmission medium, and where the fee for such service is collected from each user individually, includes the steps of opening, in the server, an imaginary account for a child of the relevant user with a limited maximum amount, and withdrawing from the imaginary account the fee for the service provided to the user's child. The server can provide a predetermined service to the relevant user's child within a range of the limited maximum amount preset in the imaginary account. When withdrawing the fee from the imaginary account, the server can restrict the service providable to the terminal. Thus, the parent enables his child to receive a desired on-line service, such as on-line shopping or video-on-demand, on the basis of the child's own judgment by setting an upper limit of a service utilizable by the child and still limiting the services providable for the child, hence realizing promoted utilization of the service by children.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a system and method of providing a virtual reality space that can be shared by unspecified users world-wide by the steps of composing, when a Universal Resource Locator (URL) is transmitted from a client terminal via a network.
Abstract: A system and method of providing a virtual reality space that can be shared by unspecified users world-wide by the steps of composing, when a Universal Resource Locator (URL) is transmitted from a client terminal via a network, a three-dimensional virtual reality space of only basic objects of which basic states do not change and sending the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a shared server terminal from an information server and a mapping server to the transmitting client terminal. When the client terminal accesses the shared server based on the received IP address, information associated with avatars (update objects) representing users of other client terminals is transmitted from the shared server, displaying the virtual reality space reflecting the avatars on the client terminal. Consequently, the three-dimensional virtual reality space can be shared without changing the existing Internet.

TL;DR: In this article, a graphical user interface (GUI) displays graphical images representing devices coupled to a bus structure, and the bus structure is also graphically represented and illustratively coupled to each of the graphical device images.
Abstract: A graphical user interface (GUI) displays graphical images representing devices coupled to a bus structure. The bus structure is also graphically represented and illustratively coupled to each of the graphical device images. Preferably, the bus structure is an IEEE 1394 serial bus. The system is preferably a computer system. Alternatively, the system is a television, monitor or other display system coupled to and capable of communicating over the serial bus and including a control processor and a display device. When a device is added to the serial bus, a graphical image representing that device is automatically displayed in the graphical user interface. Similarly, when a device is removed from the serial bus, the graphical image representing that device is grayed out, leaving a shadow of the graphical image until the device is either re-coupled or the system is powered off. Tasks performed by the devices coupled to the serial bus are also controlled and monitored by the user through the graphical user interface of the computer system. In order to control such tasks, a cursor control device is used to choose options displayed in the graphical user interface. One or more task windows are included in the interface which help the user select the task to be performed. Once selected, controls, commands and data related to that task are displayed within a control display window of the graphical user interface. When a task requires data to be sent between devices, the flow of data between the devices over the serial bus network is graphically represented by an animated data stream within the graphical representation of the bus structure. When the data stops flowing between the devices, the animated data stream disappears. When a device is added to the serial bus, an animated stream of data temporarily flows between the graphical image of the new device and the computer system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a signal converting apparatus and method predictively produces highly accurate interpolated pixels in accordance with a classification which precisely reflects a variety of signal characteristics of inputted video signals to provide a high resolution video signal.
Abstract: The signal converting apparatus and method predictively produces highly accurate interpolated pixels in accordance with a classification which precisely reflects a variety of signal characteristics of inputted video signals to provide a high resolution video signal. An activity is evaluated and classified (12) for each block of an inputted video signal (S1). Stepwise classifications (p0-p2), (Fig 5, 22-24) are executed on each block of the inputted video signal (S1) and a classification (C1) is selected in accordance with an activity code (c0) obtained as a result of the activity classification (21). In this way, the accuracy of subsequent classifications can be increased, reflecting the activity characteristic of each block of the inputted video signal (S1), thus achieving, as a whole, a highly accurate classification of the inputted video signal (S1). Appropriate prediction coefficients (d1) stored in a ROM (14) are read out based on the activity code (c0) and the class code (c1) for each block of the inputted video signal (S1). The coefficients are used in calculators (13) to produce highly accurate interpolated pixel values (d2-d5) which are selected by a selector 15 to provide a high resolution video signal (S2).

TL;DR: This paper describes its fast iterative algorithm, based on a general framework of projection onto convex sets (POCS), that can reconstruct many contiguous noisy pixels in areas with large patterns while maintaining continuity of features such as lines.
Abstract: Scratches on old films must be removed since these are more noticeable on higher definition and digital televisions. Wires that suspend actors or cars must be carefully erased during post production of special effects shots. Both of these are time consuming tasks but can be addressed by the following image restoration process: given the locations of noisy pixels to be replaced and a prototype image, restore those noisy pixels in a natural way. We call it image noise removal and this paper describes its fast iterative algorithm. Most existing algorithms for removing image noise use either frequency domain information (e.g low pass filtering) or spatial domain information (e.g median filtering or stochastic texture generation). The few that do combine the two domains place the limitation that the image be band limited and the band limits be known. Our algorithm works in both spatial and frequency domains without placing the limitations about band limits, making it possible to fully exploit advantages from each domain. While global features and large textures are captured in frequency domain, local continuity and sharpness are maintained in spatial domain. With a judicious choice of operations and domains in which they work, our dual-domain approach can reconstruct many contiguous noisy pixels in areas with large patterns while maintaining continuity of features such as lines. In addition, the image intensity does not have to be uniform. These are significant advantages over existing algorithms. Our algorithm is based on a general framework of projection onto convex sets (POCS). Any image analysis technique that can be described as a closed convex set can be cleanly plugged into the iteration loop of our algorithm. This is another important advantage of our algorithm. TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for inputting coordinate information in which a relative coordinate mode and an absolute coordinate mode are automatically switched depending on a contact area is presented. But it is not shown how to detect the contact area.
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for inputting coordinate information in which a relative coordinate mode and an absolute coordinate mode is automatically switched depending on a contact area. If a tablet is operated with a finger or a pen, a detection circuit detects the contact area. If the contact area is greater than a predefined threshold value, a signal corresponding to the relative coordinates of the point P at which the finger or the pen is contact with the tablet is output. If the contact area is equal to or smaller than the predefined threshold value, a signal corresponding to the absolute coordinates of the point P is output. The above output signal is supplied to a transmission module. The transmission module performs frequency modulation on the received signal and transmits the resultant signal via a transmission antenna. There are also provided buttons used for clicking operations. If a power switch is turned on, a power supply voltage is supplied from a battery via a power supply circuit.
