TL;DR: In this article, a passive-type biofuel cell was developed, which achieved a power density of 1.45 ± 0.24 mW cm−2 at 0.3 V. This performance was achieved by introducing three technologies: (1) Enzymes and mediator are densely entrapped on carbon-fiber electrodes with the enzymatic activity retained, (2) the concentration of buffer in electrolyte solution was optimized for the immobilized enzymes, and (3) the cathode structure was designed to supply O2 efficiently.
Abstract: Biofuel cells are a next-generation energy device because they use renewable fuels with high energy density and safety. We have developed passive-type biofuel cell units, which generate a power over 100 mW (80 cm3, 39.7 g). Our biofuel cell, in which two-electron oxidation of glucose and four-electron reduction of O2 occurs at pH 7 in mediated bioelectrochemical processes under quiescent conditions, accomplished the maximum power density of 1.45 ± 0.24 mW cm−2 at 0.3 V. The cell units with a multi-stacked structure successfully operate a radio-controlled car (16.5 g), which demonstrates the potential of biofuel cells in practical applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, an image pickup apparatus capable of improving the image quality of a picked-up image at the time of closely picking up an image is provided, and an image synthesizing process using images is performed to obtain image-processed data (image pickup data D2).
Abstract: An image pickup apparatus capable of improving the image quality of a picked-up image at the time of closely picking up an image is provided. In an image processing section 14, after a process of clipping a central region 31 and an image reversing process are performed in each of image pickup regions 3 of microlenses on image pickup data D1 obtained by an image pickup device 13, an image synthesizing process using images is performed to obtain image-processed data (image pickup data D2). In the image pickup data D2, the process of clipping the central region 31 is performed in each of the image pickup regions 3 of the microlenses, so even if a living organism 2 as an object subjected to image pickup is closely placed, an overlap region 32 between the image pickup regions 3 by adjacent microlenses is removed. In addition, the range of the central region 31 may have a fixed value which is set in advance, or may be changed depending on a distance between the object subjected to image pickup (living organism) 2 and a microlens array 12.

TL;DR: A novel method for content-aware image resizing based on optimization of a well-defined image distance function, which preserves both the important regions and the global visual effect (the background or other decorative objects) of an image.
Abstract: We present a novel method for content-aware image resizing based on optimization of a well-defined image distance function, which preserves both the important regions and the global visual effect (the background or other decorative objects) of an image. The method operates by joint use of seam carving and image scaling. The principle behind our method is the use of a bidirectional similarity function of image Euclidean distance (IMED), while cooperating with a dominant color descriptor (DCD) similarity and seam energy variation. The function is suitable for the quantitative evaluation of the resizing result and the determination of the best seam carving number. Different from the previous simplex-mode approaches, our method takes the advantages of both discrete and continuous methods. The technique is useful in image resizing for both reduction/retargeting and enlarging. We also show that this approach can be extended to indirect image resizing.

TL;DR: In this paper, a full-color eyewear display with over 85% see-through transmittance with a 16° horizontal field of view was developed, where two in-and out-coupling reflection volume hologram elements enabled a simple configuration that has an optical engine beside the user's temples.
Abstract: — A full-color eyewear display with over 85% see-through transmittance with a 16° horizontal field of view was developed. Very low color crosstalk, less than 0.008 Δu′v′ uniformity, and 120% NTSC color gamut were achieved. Waveguides with two in- and out-coupling reflection volume hologram elements enabled a simple configuration that has an optical engine beside the user's temples. The reflection volume hologram elements used on the waveguides realized a small thickness of 1.4 mm for each waveguide, and an out-coupling reflection volume hologram used as an optical combiner contributed a high see-through transmittance of 85% due to its wavelength selectivity. However, there are technical challenges in achieving a reasonable screen size and quality color images with optics that utilize holographic waveguides because holograms have large chromatic dispersions compared to conventional optical elements such as lenses and mirrors. Approaches to overcome these issues are described.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed to provide each communication station with a transmission prioritised period without any useless latency in an ad-hoc communication environment including no control station, where the beacon signal is periodically transmitted and acquired by the communication station immediately after transmission of the beacon.
Abstract: The present invention is to provide each communication station with a transmission prioritised period without any useless latency in an ad-hoc communication environment including no control station. For this end, each communication station periodically transmits the beacon signal and acquires the transmission prioritised period immediately after transmission of the beacon. If the number of communication stations in the network is small, a communication station transmit a supplementary beacon within the super frame period, thereby effectively shortening the beacon interval and reducing latency at the start of transmission. At the time when a new communication station enters the network, the supplementary beacon is released in order to accommodate such new communication station.

TL;DR: In this article, a two-point specification detector is used to detect two point specifications and causes to calculate coordinates of the two points, and a GUI handler includes a processing mode modification block which differently interprets the event when a single point is specified and when two points are specified.
Abstract: The present invention enables to easily perform a graphic processing even when a touch panel is used. When a resistance film unit is pressed with a pen or a finger, output voltages associated with the X coordinate and the Y coordinate position are changed and these output voltages are transmitted as the X coordinate data and the Y coordinate data to a touch panel driver. According to the output from the resistance film unit, the touch panel driver generates an event for supply to a GUI handler. The touch panel driver includes a two-point specification detector which detects two point specifications and causes to calculate coordinates of the two points. The GUI handler generates a message corresponding to the GUI according to the event and supplies the message to an application. The GUI handler includes a processing mode modification block which differently interprets the event when a single point is specified and when two points are specified, thereby modifying the graphic processing mode.

Abstract: A method of matching a pose of a synthesised representation of a human or animal body to a captured image of that human or animal body is provided, which can be used to generate a graphical model of the body when disposed on a plane, such as a synthesised model of a football player on a field of play.
