TL;DR: This paper describes two different deep neural network architectures for the separation of music into individual instrument tracks, a feed-forward and a recurrent one, and shows that each of them yields themselves state-of-the art results on the SiSEC DSD100 dataset.
Abstract: This paper deals with the separation of music into individual instrument tracks which is known to be a challenging problem. We describe two different deep neural network architectures for this task, a feed-forward and a recurrent one, and show that each of them yields themselves state-of-the art results on the SiSEC DSD100 dataset. For the recurrent network, we use data augmentation during training and show that even simple separation networks are prone to overfitting if no data augmentation is used. Furthermore, we propose a blending of both neural network systems where we linearly combine their raw outputs and then perform a multi-channel Wiener filter post-processing. This blending scheme yields the best results that have been reported to-date on the SiSEC DSD100 dataset.

TL;DR: DeepBach, a graphical model aimed at modeling polyphonic music and specifically hymn-like pieces, is introduced, which is capable of generating highly convincing chorales in the style of Bach.
Abstract: This paper introduces DeepBach, a graphical model aimed at modeling polyphonic music and specifically hymn-like pieces. We claim that, after being trained on the chorale harmonizations by Johann Sebastian Bach, our model is capable of generating highly convincing chorales in the style of Bach. DeepBach's strength comes from the use of pseudo-Gibbs sampling coupled with an adapted representation of musical data. This is in contrast with many automatic music composition approaches which tend to compose music sequentially. Our model is also steerable in the sense that a user can constrain the generation by imposing positional constraints such as notes, rhythms or cadences in the generated score. We also provide a plugin on top of the MuseScore music editor making the interaction with DeepBach easy to use.

TL;DR: A novel network architecture that extends the recently developed densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) and takes advantage of long contextual information and outperforms state-of-the-art results on SiSEC 2016 competition by a large margin in terms of signal-to-distortion ratio.
Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of audio source separation. To handle the complex and ill-posed nature of the problems of audio source separation, the current state-of-the-art approaches employ deep neural networks to obtain instrumental spectra from a mixture. In this study, we propose a novel network architecture that extends the recently developed densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet), which has shown excellent results on image classification tasks. To deal with the specific problem of audio source separation, an up-sampling layer, block skip connection and band-dedicated dense blocks are incorporated on top of DenseNet. The proposed approach takes advantage of long contextual information and outperforms state-of-the-art results on SiSEC 2016 competition by a large margin in terms of signal-to-distortion ratio. Moreover, the proposed architecture requires significantly fewer parameters and considerably less training time compared with other methods.

TL;DR: In this article, a large-scale Japanese image caption dataset based on images from MS-COCO is constructed, which consists of 820,310 Japanese captions for 164,062 images.
Abstract: In recent years, automatic generation of image descriptions (captions), that is, image captioning, has attracted a great deal of attention. In this paper, we particularly consider generating Japanese captions for images. Since most available caption datasets have been constructed for English language, there are few datasets for Japanese. To tackle this problem, we construct a large-scale Japanese image caption dataset based on images from MS-COCO, which is called STAIR Captions. STAIR Captions consists of 820,310 Japanese captions for 164,062 images. In the experiment, we show that a neural network trained using STAIR Captions can generate more natural and better Japanese captions, compared to those generated using English-Japanese machine translation after generating English captions.

TL;DR: This work presents an approach to generate structured sequences, based on a mechanism for sampling efficiently variations of musical sequences, that can be used to implement composition strategies that enforce arbitrary structure on a musical lead sheet generation problem.
Abstract: Recently, machine-learning techniques have been successfully used for the generation of complex artifacts such as music or text. However, these techniques are still unable to capture and generate artifacts that are convincingly structured. In particular, musical sequences do not exhibit pattern structure, as typically found in human composed music. We present an approach to generate structured sequences, based on a mechanism for sampling efficiently variations of musical sequences. Given an input sequence and a statistical model, this mechanism uses belief propagation to sample a set of sequences whose distance to the input sequence is approximately within specified bounds. This mechanism uses local fields to bias the generation. We show experimentally that sampled sequences are indeed closely correlated to the standard musical similarity function defined by Mongeau and Sankoff. We then show how this mechanism can be used to implement composition strategies that enforce arbitrary structure on a musical lead sheet generation problem. We illustrate our approach with a convincingly structured generated lead sheet in the style of the Beatles.

TL;DR: The Zero Difference Enumeration (ZDE) attack as mentioned in this paper uses the outputs of the tables instead of the inputs to mount the power analysis attack and is able to extract the secret key from the flow obfuscated and location randomized versions of several whitebox binaries available in crypto literature.
Abstract: Whitebox cryptography aims to ensure the security of cryptographic algorithms in the whitebox model where the adversary has full access to the execution environment. To attain security in this setting is a challenging problem: Indeed, all published whitebox implementations of standard symmetric-key algorithms such as AES to date have been practically broken. However, as far as we know, no whitebox implementation in real-world products has suffered from a key recovery attack. This is due to the fact that commercial products deploy additional software protection mechanisms on top of the whitebox implementation. This makes practical attacks much less feasible in real-world applications. There are numerous software protection mechanisms which protect against standard whitebox attacks. One such technique is control flow obfuscation which randomizes the order of table lookups for each execution of the whitebox encryption module. Another technique is randomizing the locations of the various Look up tables (LUTs) in the memory address space. In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of these countermeasures against two attack paradigms. The first known as Differential Computational Analysis (DCA) attack was developed by Bos, Hubain, Michiels and Teuwen in CHES 2016. The attack passively collects software execution traces for several plaintext encryptions and uses the collected data to perform an analysis similar to the well known differential power attacks (DPA) to recover the secret key. Since the software execution traces contain time demarcated physical addresses of memory locations being read/written into, they essentially leak the values of the inputs to the various LUTs accessed during the whitebox encryption operation, which as it turns out leaks sufficient information to perform the power attack. We found that if in addition to control flow obfuscation, one were to randomize the locations of the LUTs in the memory, then it is very difficult to perform the DCA on the resultant system using such table inputs and extract the secret key in reasonable time. As an alternative, we investigate the version of the DCA attack which uses the outputs of the tables instead of the inputs to mount the power analysis attack. This modified DCA is able to extract the secret key from the flow obfuscated and location randomized versions of several whitebox binaries available in crypto literature. We develop another attack called the Zero Difference Enumeration (ZDE) attack. The attack records software traces for several pairs of strategically selected plaintexts and performs a simple statistical test on the effective difference of the traces to extract the secret key. We show that ZDE is able to recover the keys of whitebox systems. Finally we propose a new countermeasure for protecting whitebox binaries based on insertion of random delays which aims to make both the ZDE and DCA attackspractically difficult by adding random noise in the information leaked to the attacker.

Abstract: A wristband-type PPG heart rate sensor capable of overcoming motion artifacts in daily activity and detecting heart rate variability has been developed together with a motion artifact cancellation framework. In this work, a motion artifact model in daily life was derived and motion artifacts caused by activity of arm, finger, and wrist were cancelled significantly. Highly reliable instant heart rate detection with high noiseresistance was achieved from noise-reduced pulse signals based on peak-detection and autocorrelation methods. The wristband-type PPG heart rate sensor with our motion artifact cancellation framework was compared with ECG instant heart rate measurement in both laboratory and office environments. In a laboratory environment, mean reliability (percentage of time within 10% error relative to ECG instant heart rate) was 86.5% and the one-day pulse-accuracy achievement rate based on time use data of body motions in daily life was 88.1% or approximately 21 hours. Our device and motion artifact cancellation framework enable continuous heart rate variability monitoring in daily life and could be applied to heart rate variability analysis and emotion recognition.

TL;DR: A new supervised monaural source separation based on autoencoders using the autoencoder for the dictionary training such that the nonlinear network can encode the target source with high expressiveness.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a new supervised monaural source separation based on autoencoders. We employ the autoencoder for the dictionary training such that the nonlinear network can encode the target source with high expressiveness. The dictionary is trained by each target source without the mixture signal, which makes the system independent from the context where the dictionaries will be used. In separation process, the decoder portions of the trained autoencoders are used as dictionaries to find the activations in a iterative manner such that a summation of the decoder outputs approximates the original mixture. The results of the instruments source separation experiments revealed that the separation performance of the proposed method was superior to that of the NMF.
