TL;DR: In this article, a surface micromachining process, using an oxide sacrificial layer and poly/nitride/poly membranes, has been developed for light modulators integrated on the same chip as the signal processing.
Abstract: The development of compact light modulators integrated on the same chip as the signal processing opens many opportunities for combining inter-chip optical communications with standard silicon circuitry. The use of surface micromachining allows high speed of operation and small size integration with other circuitry. The optical and mechanical requirements for the devices also have to be considered, to ensure compatability with standard silicon processing. A surface micromachining process, using an oxide sacrificial layer and poly/nitride/poly membranes, has been developed. This paper presents the optical and mechanical considerations in the development of a compact micromachined silicon Fabry-Perot interferometer. Initial tests have shown that these micromachined membranes represent a compact and effective light modulating method.

07 Mar 2001TL;DR: In this paper, a media manager is proposed to provide data flow management and other services for client applications on devices coupled together within a network, where the media manager also manages the flow and format of data transfers between the devices on the network.
Abstract: A media manager provides data flow management and other services for client applications on devices coupled together within a network. Preferably, these devices are coupled together within an IEEE 1394-1995 serial bus network. A device control module is generated for each available device for providing an abstraction for all of the capabilities and requirements of the device including the appropriate control protocol, physical connections and connection capabilities for the device. The media manager also manages the flow and format of data transfers between the devices on the network. Through an interface, a user accesses the media manager and enters functions which are to be completed using the devices coupled together on the network. If the appropriate devices are available, the media manager controls and manages the completion of the requested task. If the appropriate devices are not available, but the required subdevices are available in multiple devices, the media manager forms a virtual device from subdevices in multiple devices in order to complete the requested task. Once the appropriate devices and subdevices are assigned to a task, the media manager determines if the data to be transmitted needs to be converted from one format into another format. If necessary, the media manager will also control the format conversion during the data transfer operation. The media manager also provides network enumeration and registry searching capabilities for client applications to find available services, physical devices and virtual devices.

21 Dec 1998TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for adjusting font size in an electronic program guide display is presented, where the font size of the characters is adjusted to display the number of characters within a given number of pixels available.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adjusting font size in an electronic program guide display are provided. A multiple channel broadcasting system generates an electronic program guide identifying channels and corresponding programs in a broadcasting system. The broadcast system determines a number of characters to be displayed in an area of an electronic program guide. The broadcast system determines a number of display pixels available for display of the characters. The broadcast system adjusts the font size of the characters to display the number of characters within the number of pixels available.

21 Sep 2005TL;DR: In this article, an electrolytic solution is impregnated in a separator and 4-fluoro-1,3-dioxolane-2-one is used for improving battery characteristics such as cycle characteristics.
Abstract: A battery capable of improving battery characteristics such as cycle characteristics is provided. An electrolytic solution is impregnated in a separator. The electrolytic solution contains 4-fluoro-1,3-dioxolane-2-one. Fluorine ion content in the electrolytic solution is preferably from 10 weight ppm to 3200 weight ppm. Thereby, chemical stability of the electrolytic solution is improved, and cycle characteristics are improved. The present invention is effective for the case using an anode active material containing Sn or Si as an element for an anode.

08 May 1998TL;DR: In this article, a custom playlist to be played by a digital audio/visual actuator device can be easily created and modified through use of an effective human interface on an external device, such as a personal computer.
Abstract: A custom playlist to be played by a digital audio/visual actuator device may be easily created and modified through use of an effective human interface on an external device, such as a personal computer. Tracks, easily identifiable by their track index identifier and the TOC of the digital storage device on which they are stored, are selected by the user or by an automated method and added to a playlist file. Once the playlist is created, the playlist file is stored to non-volatile memory of the digital audio/visual actuator device. The playlist may then be easily modified if so desired by performing such functions as adding tracks, deleting tracks, and rearranging tracks of the playlist through the interface of the external device. The playlist may be played by the digital audio/visual actuator device at any time after it has been created and the digital audio/visual actuator device may be controlled by a remote control unit to actuate the playlist if so desired.
