TL;DR: In this article, a series of starburst triarylamine fluorophores SBCHO, DBCHO and CZCHO were investigated as non-doped host emitters and hole transporters.
Abstract: A new series of starburst triarylamine fluorophores SBCHO, DBCHO, CZCHO, CZCN, and SBCN, that incorporate diphenylamine or carbazole as the electron donor and dicyanovinyl or aldehyde as the electron acceptor, has been prepared and their photophysical properties are investigated. In sharp contrast to most red-emitting dopants, which show serious aggregation-caused quench phenomena, the new starburst triphenylamine derivatives reported here show unique enhanced emission in the solid state or upon aggregation. Organic light emitting diodes using these compounds as non-doped host emitters and hole transporters have been fabricated. The highest external quantum yield reaches 2.09 % for CZCHO. SBCHO was investigated as a chlorine gas fluorescence (FL) solid-film sensor for the first time. The high-intensity emission was ‘turned off' immediately after being blown by Cl2 gas.

Abstract: In this paper a survey of solar-based driven thermoelectric technologies and their applications is presented. Initially, a brief analysis of the environmental problems related to the use of conventional technologies and energy sources is presented and the benefits offered by thermoelectric technologies and renewable energy systems are outlined. The development history of solar-based thermoelectric technologies is introduced together with the discussion of the existing drawbacks of current systems. Typical applications of the solar-driven thermoelectric refrigeration and the solar-driven thermoelectric power generation are presented in order to show to the reader the extent of their applicability. The application areas described in this paper show that solar-driven thermoelectric technologies could be used in a wide variety of fields. They are attractive technologies that not only can serve the needs for refrigeration, air-conditioning applications and power generation, but also can meet demand for energy conservation and environment protection.

TL;DR: In this paper, a naturally occurring microtubullar silicate, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), was co-cured with epoxy/cyanate ester resin to form organic-inorganic hybrids.
Abstract: A naturally occurred microtubullar silicate, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), was co-cured with epoxy/cyanate ester resin to form organic–inorganic hybrids. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the hybrids with low HNT concentration was found to be substantially lower than that of the plain cured resin. The moduli of the hybrids in the glassy state and rubbery state were significantly higher than those for the plain cured resin. The dispersion of HNTs in the resin matrix was very uniform as revealed by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The interfacial reactions between the HNTs and cyanate ester (CE) were revealed by the results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The substantially increased properties of the hybrids were attributed to the covalent bonding between the nanotubes and the matrix.

TL;DR: Light is shed on STSS triggered by SS2 at the genomic level, facilitates further understanding of its pathogenesis and points to directions of development on some effective strategies to combat highly pathogenic SS2 infections.
Abstract: Background Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is an important zoonotic pathogen, causing more than 200 cases of severe human infection worldwide, with the hallmarks of meningitis, septicemia, arthritis, etc. Very recently, SS2 has been recognized as an etiological agent for streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), which was originally associated with Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) in Streptococci. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying STSS are poorly understood. Methods and FindingsTo elucidate the genetic determinants of STSS caused by SS2, whole genome sequencing of 3 different Chinese SS2 strains was undertaken. Comparative genomics accompanied by several lines of experiments, including experimental animal infection, PCR assay, and expression analysis, were utilized to further dissect a candidate pathogenicity island (PAI). Here we show, for the first time, a novel molecular insight into Chinese isolates of highly invasive SS2, which caused two large-scale human STSS outbreaks in China. A candidate PAI of ∼89 kb in length, which is designated 89K and specific for Chinese SS2 virulent isolates, was investigated at the genomic level. It shares the universal properties of PAIs such as distinct GC content, consistent with its pivotal role in STSS and high virulence.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first PAI candidate from S. suis worldwide. Our finding thus sheds light on STSS triggered by SS2 at the genomic level, facilitates further understanding of its pathogenesis and points to directions of development on some effective strategies to combat highly pathogenic SS2 infections.

TL;DR: HCOEA is tested on 13 well-known benchmark functions, and the experimental results suggest that it is more robust and efficient than other state-of-the-art algorithms from the literature in terms of the selected performance metrics.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel evolutionary algorithm (EA) for constrained optimization problems, i.e., the hybrid constrained optimization EA (HCOEA). This algorithm effectively combines multiobjective optimization with global and local search models. In performing the global search, a niching genetic algorithm based on tournament selection is proposed. Also, HCOEA has adopted a parallel local search operator that implements a clustering partition of the population and multiparent crossover to generate the offspring population. Then, nondominated individuals in the offspring population are used to replace the dominated individuals in the parent population. Meanwhile, the best infeasible individual replacement scheme is devised for the purpose of rapidly guiding the population toward the feasible region of the search space. During the evolutionary process, the global search model effectively promotes high population diversity, and the local search model remarkably accelerates the convergence speed. HCOEA is tested on 13 well-known benchmark functions, and the experimental results suggest that it is more robust and efficient than other state-of-the-art algorithms from the literature in terms of the selected performance metrics, such as the best, median, mean, and worst objective function values and the standard deviations

TL;DR: In this paper, the FTIR transmission spectrum shows that pyridine replaces the surfactant (HDA) molecules attached to the nanocrystals' surface after posttreatment of CdS nanorods by refluxing in pyrinyidine.
Abstract: Multiarmed CdS nanorods have been used as the electron acceptors to fabricate efficient hybrid solar cells. It was demonstrated that when pyridine was used as a solvent for spin coating an active layer consisting of MEH-PPV/CdS blend instead of chlorobenzene, short-circuit current of the device can typically be increased by six times. The FTIR transmission spectrum shows that pyridine replaces the surfactant (HDA) molecules attached to the nanocrystals' surface after posttreatment of CdS nanorods by refluxing in pyridine. Transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, current−voltage characteristics, photocurrent action spectra measurements, and photoluminescence quenching were used to characterize MEH-PPV/CdS blend spin-coated from pyridine solution. Thermal treatment of the blend films can further enhance the short-circuit current in the device. Best device performance was achieved with a power conversion efficiency of 1.17% under AM1.5 illumination (100 mW cm-2), significantly higher than t...

TL;DR: In this article, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were acidified by concentrated nitric acid and were employed as adsorbent to study the adsorption characteristic for Pb(II) from aqueous solution.
Abstract: Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were acidified by concentrated nitric acid and were employed as adsorbent to study the adsorption characteristic for Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The results show that adsorption capacity of MWCNTs treated by concentrated nitric acid can be greatly enhanced. The adsorption of acidified MWCNTs to Pb(II) fits to the Langmuir model. The larger adsorption capacity of acidified MWCNTs for Pb(II) is mainly due to the oxygenous functional groups formed on the surface of acidified MWCNTs which can react with Pb(II) to form salt or complex deposited on the surface of MWCNTs. The equilibrium time of adsorption for acidified MWCNTs to Pb(II) is about 20 min, which is much shorter than that of activated carbon (about 120 min). The regeneration performance for the first time was studied, it is showed that the Pb(II) can be easily regenerated from acidified MWCNTs by adjusting the solution to pH 2.
