TL;DR: A fabricated pore enables us to interrogate a broader range of molecules with a wider range of conditions than can be investigated in a self-assembled protein pore in a lipid membrane.
Abstract: Nanopores can serve as high throughput, single-molecule sensing devices that provide insight into the distribution of static and dynamic molecular activities, properties, or interactions. We have studied double stranded DNA electrophoretic transport dynamics through fabricated nanopores in silicon nitride. A fabricated pore enables us to interrogate a broader range of molecules with a wider range of conditions than can be investigated in a self-assembled protein pore in a lipid membrane.

TL;DR: PPy has a good biocompatibility with rat peripheral nerve tissue and that PPy might be a candidate material for bridging the peripheral nerve gap according to the results of this study.
Abstract: In this study, the biocompatibility of the electrically conductive polymer polypyrrole (PPy) with nerve tissue was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The extraction solution of PPy powder, which was synthesized chemically, was tested for acute toxicity, subacute toxicity, pyretogen, quantitative measure of cell viability, hemolysis, allergen, and micronuclei. The PPy membrane was synthesized electrochemically on the indium tin oxide conductive borosilicate glass. The dorsal root ganglia from 1-3-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats were cultured above PPy membrane and observed by light or scanning electron microscopy. The PPy-silicone tube (PPy membrane on the inner surface of the silicone tube) also synthesized electrochemically was used to bridge across 10-mm sciatic nerve gap in rats. Twenty-four weeks after the operation to rats, the regenerated tissues were observed by electrophysiological and histological techniques. PPy extraction solution showed no evidence of acute and subacute toxicity, pyretogen, hemolysis, allergen, and mutagenesis, and the Schwann cells from the PPy extraction solution group showed better survival rate and proliferation rate as compared with the saline solution control group. The migration of the Schwann cells and the neurite extension from dorsal root ganglia on the surface of PPy membrane-coated glass was better than those of bare glass. There was only lightly inflammation during 6 months of the postoperation, when the PPy-silicone tube bridged across the gap of the transected sciatic nerve. The regeneration of nerve tissue in the PPy-silicone tube was slightly better than that in the plain silicone tube by means of electrophysiological and histological examination. The results of this study indicate that PPy has a good biocompatibility with rat peripheral nerve tissue and that PPy might be a candidate material for bridging the peripheral nerve gap.

Abstract: In this paper, we define two types of linguistic preference relations (multiplicative linguistic preference relation and additive linguistic preference relation), and study some of their desirable properties. We introduce the extended geometric mean (EGM) operator, extended arithmetical averaging (EAA) operator, extended ordered weighted averaging (EOWA) operator and extended ordered weighted geometric (EOWG) operator. An approach based on the EGM and EOWG operators and multiplicative linguistic preference relations and an approach based on the EAA and EOWA operators and additive linguistic preference relations are proposed to ranking the alternatives in the group decision-making problems. Finally, we give a numerical example to illustrate the developed approaches.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sufficient condition for the existence, uniqueness, and global robust stability of equilibria for interval neural networks with time delays by constructing Lyapunov functional and using matrix-norm inequality is presented.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the global robust stability of a class of delayed interval recurrent neural networks which contain time-invariant uncertain parameters whose values are unknown but bounded in given compact sets. A new sufficient condition is presented for the existence, uniqueness, and global robust stability of equilibria for interval neural networks with time delays by constructing Lyapunov functional and using matrix-norm inequality. An error is corrected in an earlier publication, and an example is given to show the effectiveness of the obtained results.

TL;DR: A theoretic basis has been developed for the application of the interval fuzzy preference relations in group decision making because it is proven that an interval fuzzy preferences relation B and the synthetic intervals fuzzy preference relation A are of acceptable compatibility.
Abstract: This paper defines the concept of compatibility degree of two interval fuzzy preference relations, and gives a compatibility index of two interval fuzzy preference relations. It is proven that an interval fuzzy preference relation B and the synthetic interval fuzzy preference relation of interval fuzzy preference relations A1,A2,…,As are of acceptable compatibility under the condition that the interval fuzzy preference relation B and each of the interval fuzzy preference relations Al,A2,…,As are of acceptable compatibility, and thus a theoretic basis has been developed for the application of the interval fuzzy preference relations in group decision making.

TL;DR: Ten phosphatized specimens of a small animal displaying clear bilaterian features have been recovered from the Doushantuo Formation, China, and provide the first evidence confirming the phylogenetic inference that Bilateria arose well before the Cambrian.
Abstract: Ten phosphatized specimens of a small (<180 micrometers) animal displaying clear bilaterian features have been recovered from the Doushantuo Formation, China, dating from 40 to 55 million years before the Cambrian. Seen in sections, this animal (Vernanimalcula guizhouena gen. et sp. nov.) had paired coeloms extending the length of the gut; paired external pits that could be sense organs; bilateral, anterior-posterior organization; a ventrally directed anterior mouth with thick walled pharynx; and a triploblastic structure. The structural complexity is that of an adult rather than a larval form. These fossils provide the first evidence confirming the phylogenetic inference that Bilateria arose well before the Cambrian.

TL;DR: A Semantic, Hierarchical, Online Clustering (SHOC) approach to automatically organizing Web search results into groups which combines the power of two novel techniques, key phrase discovery and orthogonal clustering, to generate clusters which are both reasonable and readable.
Abstract: We propose a Semantic, Hierarchical, Online Clustering (SHOC) approach to automatically organizing Web search results into groups. SHOC combines the power of two novel techniques, key phrase discovery and orthogonal clustering, to generate clusters which are both reasonable and readable. Moreover, SHOC can work for multiple languages: not only English but also oriental languages like Chinese. The main contribution of this paper includes the following. (1) The benefits of using key phrases as Web document features are discussed. A key phrase discovery algorithm based on suffix array is presented. This algorithm is highly effective and efficient no matter how large the language’s alphabet is. (2) The concept of orthogonal clustering is proposed for general clustering problems. The reason why matrix Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) can provide solution to orthogonal clustering is strictly proved. The orthogonal clustering has a solid mathematics foundation and many advantages over traditional heuristic clustering algorithms.

TL;DR: Composite materials comprised of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and SiO(2) inverse opal films were fabricated and it was found that the change in optical properties was derived from the orientation of the LC molecules in the voids in the inverseOpal film.
Abstract: Composite materials comprised of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and SiO2 inverse opal films were fabricated. Their optical properties were quite different from those of inverse opal films without the LCs. The optical properties could be controlled by changing the refractive indices of the LCs, which vary with orientation, phase, and temperature. In particular, the optical properties were drastically changed by thermal or photoinduced isothermal phase transitions of the LCs. This means that the photonic band structure could be controlled, and tunable photonic crystals have been achieved, based on the inverse opal structure. The mechanism of this change was investigated by the evaluation of the effective refractive indices. As a result, it was found that the change in optical properties was derived from the orientation of the LC molecules in the voids in the inverse opal film. Furthermore, once the mechanism was understood, it was also possible to control the position of the reflection peak by changing the a...

TL;DR: The Asian Rotavirus Surveillance Network is a novel, regional approach to surveillance for vaccine-preventable diseases that should provide increased visibility and advocacy, enable more efficient data collection, facilitate training, and serve as the paradigm for rotavirus surveillance activities in other regions.
Abstract: Rotavirus remains the most common cause of severe, dehydrating diarrhea among children worldwide. Several rotavirus vaccines are under development. Decisions about new vaccine introduction will require reliable data on disease impact. The Asian Rotavirus Surveillance Network, begun in 2000 to facilitate collection of these data, is a regional collaboration of 36 hospitals in nine countries or areas that conduct surveillance for rotavirus hospitalizations using a uniform World Health Organization protocol. We summarize the Network's organization and experience from August 2001 through July 2002. During this period, 45% of acute diarrheal hospitalizations among children 0–5 years were attributable to rotavirus, higher than previous estimates. Rotavirus was detected in all sites year-round. This network is a novel, regional approach to surveillance for vaccine-preventable diseases. Such a network should provide increased visibility and advocacy, enable more efficient data collection, facilitate training, and serve as the paradigm for rotavirus surveillance activities in other regions.

TL;DR: Porous NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) with ideal pore characteristics and high strength for hard tissue implants has been fabricated by combustion synthesis in this paper, where the experimental results show the combustion temperature of Ni + Ti reactant system using an improved ignition technique can reach 1310 C at the pre-heating temperature of 350 C.
Abstract: Porous NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) with ideal pore characteristics and high strength for hard tissue implants has been fabricated bycombustion synthesis in this paper. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the product were studied by optical microscope, scanningelectron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and compression test respectively. The experimental results show the combustiontemperature of Ni + Ti reactant system using an improved ignition technique can reach 1310 ◦ C at the pre-heating temperature of 350 ◦ C.Porous NiTi SMA with three-dimensionally interconnected pores has the isotropic pore structure, whose general porosity is about 57.3vol.%and the open porosity ratio is about 86%. Besides two second phases (Ti 2 Ni and Ni 4 Ti 3 ) in small amount, the desired products, such asB2(NiTi) and B19 (NiTi) are the predominant phases in porous NiTi SMA. The undesired Ti 2 Ni phase as discrete precipitates formed duringthe SHS process is often present on or near grain boundaries and difficult to be removed by solution treatment. Porous NiTi SMA has ahigh compressive strength (208MPa) and a low Young’s modulus (2.26GPa), which is similar to natural bones and can meet the mechanicalproperty demands of hard tissue implants for heavy load-bearing applications.© 2003 Elsevier B.V. TL;DR: In this paper, the convergence of continuous-time BAM neural networks is studied and sufficient conditions are obtained for the networks to converge exponentially toward the equilibrium associated with the constant input sources.
Abstract: First, convergence of continuous-time Bidirectional Associative Memory (BAM) neural networks are studied. By using Lyapunov functionals and some analysis technique, the delay-independent sufficient conditions are obtained for the networks to converge exponentially toward the equilibrium associated with the constant input sources. Second, discrete-time analogues of the continuous-time BAM networks are formulated and studied. It is shown that the convergence characteristics of the continuous-time systems are preserved by the discrete-time analogues without any restriction imposed on the uniform discretionary step size. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

TL;DR: In this paper, a capacitive humidity sensor integrated on a polysilicon heater is reported to show a linear dependence on the relative humidity in the range of 20-70%, the maximum hysteresis is 3%.
Abstract: This paper reports a novel capacitive humidity sensor integrated on a polysilicon heater. The sensor was fabricated with the industrial standard CMOS process to achieve a cost-effective solution for accurate and reliability. The sensing material polyimide was obtained by a post-processing step after the standard CMOS fabrication. The sensing principle of the sensor is based on the dielectric constant change of deposited polyimide due to absorption/desorption of vapor. The passivation (silicon nitride) layer with no limitations to the electrode selection is between the electrode and sensing material in order to improve the reliability of the relative humidity for the sensors. The humidity sensor was measured to show a linear dependence on the relative humidity in the range of 20–70%, the maximum hysteresis is 3%.
