TL;DR: An efficient alternating algorithm is developed where the solutions to the transmit covariance of the source and the phase shift matrix of the IRS are achieved in closed form and semi-closed form, respectively.
Abstract: We investigate transmission optimization for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-antenna systems from the physical-layer security perspective. The design goal is to maximize the system secrecy rate subject to the source transmit power constraint and the unit modulus constraints imposed on phase shifts at the IRS. To solve this complicated non-convex problem, we develop an efficient alternating algorithm where the solutions to the transmit covariance of the source and the phase shift matrix of the IRS are achieved in closed form and semi-closed forms, respectively. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is guaranteed theoretically. Simulations results validate the performance advantage of the proposed optimized design.

TL;DR: It is reported that the RNA-binding protein ELAVL1/HuR plays a crucial role in regulating ferroptosis in liver fibrosis and is identified as a potential target for the treatment of liver fibrotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma receiving sorafenib monotherapy.
Abstract: Ferroptosis is a recently recognized form of regulated cell death that is characterized by lipid peroxidation. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating ferroptosis are largely unknown. In this study, we report that the RNA-binding protein ELAVL1/HuR plays a crucial role in regulating ferroptosis in liver fibrosis. Upon exposure to ferroptosis-inducing compounds, ELAVL1 protein expression was remarkably increased through the inhibition of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. ELAVL1 siRNA led to ferroptosis resistance, whereas ELAVL1 plasmid contributed to classical ferroptotic events. Interestingly, upregulated ELAVL1 expression also appeared to increase autophagosome generation and macroautophagic/autophagic flux, which was the underlying mechanism for ELAVL1-enhanced ferroptosis. Autophagy depletion completely impaired ELAVL1-mediated ferroptotic events, whereas autophagy induction showed a synergistic effect with ELAVL1. Importantly, ELAVL1 promoted autophagy activation via binding to the AU-rich elements within the F3 of the 3'-untranslated region of BECN1/Beclin1 mRNA. The internal deletion of the F3 region abrogated the ELAVL1-mediated BECN1 mRNA stability, and, in turn, prevented ELAVL1-enhanced ferroptosis. In mice, treatment with sorafenib alleviated murine liver fibrosis by inducing hepatic stellate cell (HSC) ferroptosis. HSC-specific knockdown of ELAVL1 impaired sorafenib-induced HSC ferroptosis in murine liver fibrosis. Noteworthy, we retrospectively analyzed the effect of sorafenib on HSC ferroptosis in advanced fibrotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma receiving sorafenib monotherapy. Attractively, ELAVL1 upregulation, ferritinophagy activation, and ferroptosis induction occurred in primary human HSCs from the collected human liver tissue. Overall, these results reveal novel molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways of ferroptosis, and also identify ELAVL1-autophagy-dependent ferroptosis as a potential target for the treatment of liver fibrosis. TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid excitation flux-switching (HEFS) motor is proposed, in which the airgap field can be easily controlled and is favorable for hybrid vehicles, and the preliminary topology, operation principle, design and static characteristics including phase flux-linkage, back-EMF waveforms under different excitations as well as cogging torque are evaluated based on finite element analysis.
Abstract: Flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) motor is a relatively novel brushless machine having magnets and concentrated windings in the stator instead of the conventional rotor-PM topology, which exhibits inherently sinusoidal PM flux-linkage, back-EMF waveforms and high torque capability. However, since the airgap field is produced by the stator-magnets alone, it is difficult to be regulated. Hence, a hybrid excitation method, i.e., by introducing a set of field windings into FSPM motor is employed. In this paper, a novel hybrid excitation flux-switching (HEFS) motor is proposed, in which the airgap field can be easily controlled and is favorable for hybrid vehicles. The preliminary topology, operation principle, design and static characteristics including phase flux-linkage, back-EMF waveforms under different excitations as well as cogging torque are evaluated based on finite element (FE) analysis. The results confirm the excellent field-regulation capability of a ldquoproof-of-principlerdquo HEFS motor.

24 May 2010TL;DR: This paper designs a detection algorithm based on mobile phone platforms, PerFallD, a pervasive fall detection system implemented on mobile phones and compares its performance with that of existing work and a commercial product.
Abstract: Falls are a major health risk that diminish the quality of life among elderly people With the elderly population surging, especially with aging “baby boomers”, fall detection becomes increasingly important However, existing commercial products and academic solutions struggle to achieve pervasive fall detection In this paper, we propose utilizing mobile phones as a platform for pervasive fall detection system development To our knowledge, we are the first to do so We design a detection algorithm based on mobile phone platforms We propose PerFallD, a pervasive fall detection system implemented on mobile phones We implement a prototype system on the Android G1 phone and conduct experiments to evaluate our system In particular, we compare PerFallD's performance with that of existing work and a commercial product Experimental results show that PerFallD achieves strong detection performance and power efficiency
