TL;DR: In this paper, the fatigue behavior of various fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, namely, carbon, glass, polyparaphenylenl benzobisoxazole (PBO), and basalt fibres, including the effect of hybrid applications such as carbon/glass and carbon/basalt composites.
Abstract: This paper presents the fatigue behaviour of various fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, namely, carbon, glass, polyparaphenylenl benzobisoxazole (PBO), and basalt fibres, including the effect of hybrid applications such as carbon/glass and carbon/basalt composites. A coupon test was conducted to examine the mechanical characteristics of the FRP composites subjected to monotonic and cyclic loads. Test parameters included the applied load range and different types of hybridization. Study results show that (1) the mechanical properties of the emerging PBO and basalt fibres are comparable to those of the conventional carbon and glass fibres; (2) the tensile modulus of the fibres influences the failure mode of the composite coupons; (3) the progressive damage propagation causes fatigue failure of the composites; (4) the hybrid composites of carbon/basalt significantly improves the fatigue resistance in comparison to the homogeneous basalt composite, whereas the resistance of the carbon/glass hybrid composites does not provide such effects.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the thermal stability of single layer graphene synthesized by either chemical vapor deposition or mechanical cleavage and found that the defects are initially sp3 type and become vacancy like at higher temperature.
Abstract: The thermal stability in air of graphene synthesized by either chemical vapor deposition or mechanical cleavage is studied. It is found that single layer graphene prepared by both methods starts to show defects at ~500 °C, indicated by the appearance of a disorder-induced Raman D peak. The defects are initially sp3 type and become vacancy like at higher temperature. On the other hand, bilayer graphene shows better thermal stability, and the D peak appears at ~600 °C. These results are quite different from those annealing in vacuum and controlled atmosphere. Raman images show that the defects in chemical vapor deposition graphene are not homogeneous, whereas those in mechanical cleavage graphene are uniformly distributed across the whole sample. The factors that affect the thermal stability of graphene are discussed. Our results could be important for guiding the future electronics process and chemical decoration of graphene. TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated module with filtering and radiation performance realized by covering substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity frequency selective surface (FSS) at aperture of horn antenna has been investigated.
Abstract: An integrated module with filtering and radiation performance realized by covering substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity frequency selective surface (FSS) at aperture of horn antenna has been investigated in this paper. The module has functions of bandpass filter and horn antenna, so it is called a "filtering antenna" (filtenna). It is very suitable for applications in military platforms where FSS is used for antennas and radars' radar cross section (RCS) reduction. The filtenna is simulated and optimized with CST software and its performance is verified by experiments. From simulated and measured results it can be found that the proposed structure keeps characteristics of return loss, radiation pattern and gain of the horn antenna within desired frequency band, meanwhile presents effective reflection to interference signals at out-band. Using this structure the volume and cost of communication systems in military platforms can be effectively reduced

TL;DR: Inspired by nature’s Nepenthes pitcher plant, a novel slippery film with tunable wettability is developed for liquid manipulation based on a lubricant-infused shape-memory graphene sponge.
Abstract: Functional materials with specific surface wettability play an important role in a wide variety of areas. Inspired by nature’s Nepenthes pitcher plant, we present a novel slippery film with tunable wettability based on a shape-memory graphene sponge. The porous graphene sponge coated with shape-memory polymer was used to lock in inert lubricants and construct slippery surfaces to repel different liquids. The superelasticity and high strength, together with good electrical conductivity, of the graphene sponge imparted the graphene/polymer hybrid films with fast recoverable shape-memory properties. Various droplets could slip on the compressed film with a lubricant-covered surface, but the droplets would be pinned when the shape-memory graphene film rebounded due to electrical stimulation, which caused the penetration of the infused lubricant into the pores and the exposure of rough topography film surfaces. The electrothermally dynamic tuning approach was stable and reversible; thus, the shape-memory graphene film was imparted with controlled slippery properties and functions that would be amenable to a variety of applications, such as liquid handling for microplates.
