TL;DR: This paper proposes to first transform the original problem into an equivalent optimization problem in a parametric subtractive form, by which the solution is reached through a two-layer optimization scheme, and develops an iterative algorithm to solve it.
Abstract: In this paper we study energy efficient joint power allocation and beamforming for coordinated multicell multiuser downlink systems. The considered optimization problem is in a non-convex fractional form and hard to tackle. We propose to first transform the original problem into an equivalent optimization problem in a parametric subtractive form, by which we reach its solution through a two-layer optimization scheme. The outer layer only involves one-dimension search for the energy efficiency parameter which can be addressed using the bi-section search, the key issue lies in the inner layer where a non-fractional sub-problem needs to tackle. By exploiting the relationship between the user rate and the mean square error, we then develop an iterative algorithm to solve it. The convergence of this algorithm is proved and the solution is further derived in closed-form. Our analysis also shows that the proposed algorithm can be implemented in parallel with reasonable complexity. Numerical results illustrate that our algorithm has a fast convergence and achieves near-optimal energy efficiency. It is also observed that at the low transmit power region, our solution almost achieves the optimal sum rate and the optimal energy efficiency simultaneously; while at the middle-high transmit power region, a certain sum rate loss is suffered in order to guarantee the energy efficiency.

TL;DR: Sol-gel-on-polymer–processed indium zinc oxide semiconductor nanomembrane–based ultrathin stretchable electronics with advantages of multifunctionality, simple manufacturing, imperceptible wearing, and robust interfacing are reported.
Abstract: Wearable human-machine interfaces (HMIs) are an important class of devices that enable human and machine interaction and teaming. Recent advances in electronics, materials, and mechanical designs have offered avenues toward wearable HMI devices. However, existing wearable HMI devices are uncomfortable to use and restrict the human body’s motion, show slow response times, or are challenging to realize with multiple functions. Here, we report sol-gel-on-polymer–processed indium zinc oxide semiconductor nanomembrane–based ultrathin stretchable electronics with advantages of multifunctionality, simple manufacturing, imperceptible wearing, and robust interfacing. Multifunctional wearable HMI devices range from resistive random-access memory for data storage to field-effect transistors for interfacing and switching circuits, to various sensors for health and body motion sensing, and to microheaters for temperature delivery. The HMI devices can be not only seamlessly worn by humans but also implemented as prosthetic skin for robotics, which offer intelligent feedback, resulting in a closed-loop HMI system.

TL;DR: Using the surface forces apparatus, it is shown that on mica surfaces Mefp-5 achieves an adhesion energy approaching E(ad) = ~-14 mJ/m(2) and is greater than the adhesion between highly oriented monolayers of biotin and streptavidin.
Abstract: Mussels have a remarkable ability to attach their holdfast, or byssus, opportunistically to a variety of substrata that are wet, saline, corroded, and/or fouled by biofilms. Mytilus edulis foot protein-5 (Mefp-5) is one of several proteins in the byssal adhesive plaque of the mussel M. edulis. The high content of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (Dopa) (∼30 mol %) and its localization near the plaque–substrate interface have often prompted speculation that Mefp-5 plays a key role in adhesion. Using the surface forces apparatus, we show that on mica surfaces Mefp-5 achieves an adhesion energy approaching Ead = ∼−14 mJ/m2. This exceeds the adhesion energy of another interfacial protein, Mefp-3, by a factor of 4–5 and is greater than the adhesion between highly oriented monolayers of biotin and streptavidin. The adhesion to mica is notable for its dependence on Dopa, which is most stable under reducing conditions and acidic pH. Mefp-5 also exhibits strong protein–protein interactions with itself as well as with Me...

TL;DR: The upper and lower bounds for the channel capacity of dimmable visible light communications(VLC) systems are investigated and a closed-form optimal intensity distribution of the transmitted optical signal is obtained.
Abstract: In this paper, the upper and lower bounds for the channel capacity of dimmable visible light communications(VLC) systems are investigated. Because the information is modulated into the instantaneous optical intensity, the transmitted optical intensity is represented by a nonnegative input that is corrupted by an additive white Gaussian noise. Considering the illumination support in a VLC system, the transmitted optical intensity signal must satisfy the illumination constraint, i.e., the average transmitted optical intensity is constrained by a target illumination intensity, which is determined by the nominal optical intensity of the light source devices and dimming target. An upper bound on the channel capacity is derived based on the signal space geometry via a sphere packing argument. A lower bound on the channel capacity is derived by maximizing the mutual information between the channel input and output. Both the upper and lower bounds are presented in closed forms. Furthermore, a closed-form optimal intensity distribution of the transmitted optical signal is obtained. The numerical results show that the presented bounds are very tight at the application zone of dimmable VLC links.
