TL;DR: It is demonstrated that larval midgut degradation is due to the concerted action of the two mechanisms, which occur at different times and have different functions, and that the process of autophagy can recycle molecules from the degenerating cells and supply nutrients to the animal during the non-feeding period.
Abstract: Although several features of apoptosis and autophagy have been reported in the larval organs of Lepidoptera during metamorphosis, solid experimental evidence for autophagy is still lacking. Moreover, the role of the two processes and the nature of their relationship are still cryptic. In this study, we perform a cellular, biochemical and molecular analysis of the degeneration process that occurs in the larval midgut of Bombyx mori during larval–adult transformation, with the aim to analyze autophagy and apoptosis in cells that die under physiological conditions. We demonstrate that larval midgut degradation is due to the concerted action of the two mechanisms, which occur at different times and have different functions. Autophagy is activated from the wandering stage and reaches a high level of activity during the spinning and prepupal stages, as demonstrated by specific autophagic markers. Our data show that the process of autophagy can recycle molecules from the degenerating cells and supply nutrients to the animal during the non-feeding period. Apoptosis intervenes later. In fact, although genes encoding caspases are transcribed at the end of the larval period, the activity of these proteases is not appreciable until the second day of spinning and apoptotic features are observable from prepupal phase. The abundance of apoptotic features during the pupal phase, when the majority of the cells die, indicates that apoptosis is actually responsible for cell death and for the disappearance of larval midgut cells.

TL;DR: In this article, a hierarchical graphene-wrapped TiO2@Co3O4 coaxial nanobelt arrays have been fabricated and further investigated as the electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Abstract: As one of the most important research areas in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), well-designed nanostructures have been regarded as key for solving problems such as lithium ion diffusion, the collection and transport of electrons, and the large volume changes during cycling processes. Here, hierarchical graphene-wrapped TiO2@Co3O4 coaxial nanobelt arrays (G-TiO2@Co3O4 NBs) have been fabricated and further investigated as the electrode materials for LIBs. The results show that the yielded G-TiO2@Co3O4 NBs possess a high reversible capacity, an outstanding cycling performance, and superior rate capability compared to TiO2 and TiO2@Co3O4 nanobelt array (TiO2@Co3O4 NBs) electrodes. The core–shell TiO2@Co3O4 NBs may contain many cavities and provide more extra spaces for lithium ion storage. The introduction of graphene into nanocomposite electrodes is favorable for increasing their electrical conductivity and flexibility. The integration of hierarchical core–shell nanobelt arrays and conducting graphene may induce a positive synergistic effect and contribute to the enhanced electrochemical performances of the electrode. The fabrication strategy presented here is facile, cost-effective, and can offer a new pathway for large-scale energy storage device applications.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report a systematic study of nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) in neutrinoless double-plus-denoising double-negative double-minus-negative (ND) double-zero regime with a state-of-the-art covariant density functional theory.
Abstract: We report a systematic study of nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) in neutrinoless double-$\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays with a state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field covariant density functional theory. The dynamic effects of particle-number and angular-momentum conservations as well as quadrupole shape fluctuations are taken into account with projections and generator coordinate method for both initial and final nuclei. The full relativistic transition operator is adopted to calculate the NMEs. The present systematic studies show that in most of the cases there is a much better agreement with the previous nonrelativistic calculation based on the Gogny force than in the case of the nucleus $^{150}\mathrm{Nd}$ found by Song et al. [Phys. Rev. C 90, 054309 (2014)]. In particular, we find that the total NMEs can be well approximated by the pure axial-vector coupling term with a considerable reduction of the computational effort.

TL;DR: Among cultivars, Dong Dan 80 was better able to negate the heavy metal-induced oxidative damage, which was associated with higher antioxidant activities, greater osmolytes accumulation, and lower ROS production in this cultivar.
Abstract: An investigation was carried out to examine the combined and individual effects of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) stress on osmolyte accumulation, antioxidant activities, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production at different growth stages (45, 60, 75, 90 days after sowing (DAS)) of two maize cultivars viz., Dong Dan 80 and Run Nong 35. The Cd (100 μM) and As (200 μM) were applied separately as well as in combination (Cd + As) at 30 DAS. Results revealed pronounced variations in the behavior of antioxidants, osmolytes, and ROS in both maize cultivars under the influence of Cd and As stress. Activities of enzymatic (SOD, POD, CAT and APX, GPX, GR) and non-enzymatic (GSH and AsA) antioxidants, generation of ROS, and accumulation of osmolytes were enhanced with the passage of time; therefore, the maximum values for these attributes were observed at 90 DAS for both cultivars. Exposure of plants to Cd or As stress considerably enhanced the antioxidant activities, ROS, and osmolyte accumulation compared with control, while combined application of Cd + As was more devastating in reducing plant biomass of both maize cultivars. Among cultivars, Dong Dan 80 was better able to negate the heavy metal-induced oxidative damage, which was associated with higher antioxidant activities, greater osmolytes accumulation, and lower ROS production in this cultivar.

TL;DR: This is the first nationwide multicentre study, involving 39 centres and 1044 patients, to prove the effectiveness of Huaier granule as adjuvant therapy for HCC after curative liver resection and demonstrated a significant prolongation of RFS and reduced extrahepatic recurrence in Huaier group.
Abstract: Objective There is little evidence that adjuvant therapy after radical surgical resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) improves recurrence-free survival (RFS) or overall survival (OS). We conducted a multicentre, randomised, controlled, phase IV trial evaluating the benefit of an aqueous extract of Trametes robinophila Murr (Huaier granule) to address this unmet need. Design and results A total of 1044 patients were randomised in 2:1 ratio to receive either Huaier or no further treatment (controls) for a maximum of 96 weeks. The primary endpoint was RFS. Secondary endpoints included OS and tumour extrahepatic recurrence rate (ERR). The Huaier (n=686) and control groups (n=316) had a mean RFS of 75.5 weeks and 68.5 weeks, respectively (HR 0.67; 95% CI 0.55 to 0.81). The difference in the RFS rate between Huaier and control groups was 62.39% and 49.05% (95% CI 6.74 to 19.94; p=0.0001); this led to an OS rate in the Huaier and control groups of 95.19% and 91.46%, respectively (95% CI 0.26 to 7.21; p=0.0207). The tumour ERR between Huaier and control groups was 8.60% and 13.61% (95% CI −12.59 to −2.50; p=0.0018), respectively. Conclusions This is the first nationwide multicentre study, involving 39 centres and 1044 patients, to prove the effectiveness of Huaier granule as adjuvant therapy for HCC after curative liver resection. It demonstrated a significant prolongation of RFS and reduced extrahepatic recurrence in Huaier group. Trial registration NCT01770431; Post-results.
