TL;DR: The subsolidus phase relations in the entire system ZrO2-Y2O3 were established using DTA, expansion measurements, and room and high-temperature X-ray diffraction as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The subsolidus phase relations in the entire system ZrO2-Y2O3 were established using DTA, expansion measurements, and room- and high-temperature X-ray diffraction. Three eutectoid reactions were found in the system: (a) tetragonal zirconia solid solution→monoclinic zirconia solid solution+cubic zirconia solid solution at 4.5 mol% Y2O3 and ∼490°C, (b) cubic zirconia solid solutiow→δ-phase Y4Zr3O12+hexagonalphase Y6ZrO11 at 45 mol% Y2O3 and ∼1325°±25°C, and (c) yttria C-type solid solution→wcubic zirconia solid solution+ hexagonal phase Y6ZrO11 at ∼72 mol% Y2O3 and 1650°±50°C. Two ordered phases were also found in the system, one at 40 mol% Y2O3 with ideal formula Y4Zr3O12, and another, a new hexagonal phase, at 75 mol% Y2O3 with formula Y6ZrO11. They decompose at 1375° and >1750°C into cubic zirconia solid solution and yttria C-type solid solution, respectively. The extent of the cubic zirconia and yttria C-type solid solution fields was also redetermined. By incorporating the known tetragonal-cubic zirconia transition temperature and the liquidus temperatures in the system, a new tentative phase diagram is given for the system ZrO2-Y2O3.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for the determination of apsidal motion parameters in eccentric eclipsing binaries is presented, where a sequential procedure has been followed throughout allowing an automatized on-line computation of the elements and their accuracies as well as a more realistic fit to the observed times of minima.
Abstract: In this paper, a new method for the determination of apsidal motion parameters in eccentric eclipsing binaries is presented. A sequential procedure has been followed throughout allowing an automatized on-line computation of the elements and their accuracies as well as a more realistic fit to the observed times of minima. A determination of individual mean errors for the parameters of fit give us the possibility to compare the results with available theoretical models of stellar structure. In the procedure, we have introduced a determination of preliminary elements by means of Fourier transform and extended the practical equations to terms up to the fifth power of the eccentricity. An application to the well-known case of the eclipsing binary GL Car has been made. Our analysis shows an apsidal motion period of 25.3 years with a value of 0.152 for the orbital eccentricity.

TL;DR: An apparently new type of dental wear pattern, lingual surface attrition of the maxillary anterior teeth (LSAMAT), has been found in 85% of 46 adult crania from a 3000–4200 BP Archaic site called Corondo near the Atlantic Ocean coast of Brazil, suggesting that both LSAMAT and caries resulted from eating some starchy plant like manioc.
Abstract: An apparently new type of dental wear pattern, lingual surface attrition of the maxillary anterior teeth (LSAMAT), has been found in 85% of 46 adult crania from a 3000–4200 BP Archaic site called Corondo near the Atlantic Ocean coast of Brazil. LSAMAT is associated with a high caries rate (60% of 77 adults; 11% of 1,219 permanent teeth) in what on archeologica grounds alone would be considered a mainly meat-eating population. It is suggested that both LSAMAT and caries resulted from eating some starchy plant like manioc.

TL;DR: Chitin synthetase, initially very low, was incorporated in important amounts into cell membranes mainly in a zymogenic state and was the most abundant polymer found in the aberrant wall of the regenerating protoplast of Candida albicans.
Abstract: The transition of blastospores to the mycelial phase in Candida albicans was induced after the blastospores were kept at 4 degrees C for several hours and then transferred to a fresh medium prewarmed at 37 degrees C. Glucan was the most abundant polymer in the wall in the two morphogenetic forms but the amount of chitin was higher in the mycelial form than in blastospores. Efficient protoplasting required reducing agents and proteases together with beta-glucanases (zymolyase). Protein synthesis in regenerating protoplasts was initiated after about 30 min. Chitin synthetase, initially very low, was incorporated in important amounts into cell membranes mainly in a zymogenic state. After a few hours chitin was the most abundant polymer found in the aberrant wall of the regenerating protoplast.

TL;DR: The antifungal antibiotic papulacandin β inhibited B(1,3)glucan-synthase activity, in vitro, from Schizosaccharomyces pombe to reduce the inhibition of growth caused by the antibiotic.
Abstract: The antifungal antibiotic papulacandin β inhibited B(1,3)glucan-synthase activity, in vitro, from Schizosaccharomyces pombe Levels of β(1,3)glucan-synthase from antibiotic-treated cultures were lower than the control cultures whereas mannan-synthase and β(1,3)glucanase activities were almost unaffected The presence of an osmotic stabilizer reduced the inhibition of growth caused by the antibiotic Addition of papulacandin β to a culture of S pombe specifically inhibited incorporation of glucose into the β-glucan cell wall fraction The fatty acids as well as the hydroxyl groups on the phenol residue of the papulacandin β molecule were essential for the inhibitory activity

TL;DR: Chronic treatment of rats with a liquid diet containing ethanol resulted in the development of tolerance, and acute ethanol administration induced a significant rise in serum corticosterone levels which seemed to be related to blood ethanol concentration.
Abstract: Acute ethanol administration (2 g/kg IP) induced a significant rise in serum corticosterone levels which seemed to be related to blood ethanol concentration. Chronic ethanol administration, in the form of a liquid diet for 16 or 30 days, did not alter the levels of serum corticosterone. Chronic treatment of rats with a liquid diet containing ethanol resulted in the development of tolerance.

TL;DR: Interactions between the N 2 -fixing bacterium Azospirillum brasilense and the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae were studied in relation to their effects on the growth and nutrition of Zea mays and Lolium perenne plants.
Abstract: Interactions between the N 2 -fixing bacterium Azospirillum brasilense and the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae were studied in relation to their effects on the growth and nutrition of Zea mays (C 4 ) and Lolium perenne (C 3 ) plants. Although roots from plants inoculated with Azospirillum exhibited C 2 H 2 reduction activity no significant effect of inoculation on N concentration in the plant shoots was found. With non-mycorrhizal plants, inoculation with Azospirillum resulted in increased dry matter production at the first harvest compared to the effect achieved by supplying N as fertilizer, but this trend was reversed at the last harvest. However, with mycorrhizal maize plants, Azospirillum , which stimulated the development of VA mycorrhiza, was still effective in improving plant growth and nutrient uptake at the last harvest. Azospirillum and N behaved similarly in enhancing the growth and nutrition of mycorrhizal maize. The dual inoculation of maize by Azospirillum and Glomus produced plants of a similar size, N content, and a higher P content, than those supplied with N and P.

TL;DR: The abundant pisolite of the back-reef facies of the Capitan Limestone of the Guadalupe Mountain, New Mexico and Texas has long been of geologic interest as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The abundant pisolite of the back-reef facies of the Capitan Limestone of the Guadalupe Mountain, New Mexico and Texas has long been of geologic interest. Its interpretation is important for better understanding the famous Permian Reef Complex and for interpreting pisolite, pisoids and associated facies elsewhere in the world. But major changes in prevailing concepts of the Guadalupe Mountains pisolite have occurred in the past 20 years. Consensus has not yet been reached. The purpose of this article is to summarize our current data and interpretations, emphasizing field-observable features.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the dehydroxylation mechanisms of a biotite in the temperature range 300-800°C at controlled oxygen pressures. But they did not consider the effect of the octahedral cations on the loss of hydrogen.
Abstract: The dehydroxylation mechanisms of a biotite in the temperature range 300–800° C at controlled oxygen pressures were studied by infrared (IR) and Mossbauer spectroscopies. At low pressure, the lack of O2 delays the oxidation of Fe+2 and simultaneous loss of hydrogen but favours the loss of OH associated with octahedral vacancies in comparison with heat treatment in air. Stoichiometrical considerations based on the facts that the octahedral cations are randomly distributed and all Fe+2 is oxidized lead to the conclusion that all the OH groups initially coordinated to Fe+2 must be lost during the oxidation process.

TL;DR: In this paper, tracheal sap of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Washington Navel was taken from field trees throughout the year and the nitrogen composition of the sap was determined.
Abstract: Samples of tracheal sap of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Washington Navel were taken from field trees throughout the year and the nitrogen composition of the sap was determined. The nitrogenous fraction of the sap was composed mainly of free amino acids (92–97% of total nitrogen) and nitrates throughout the year. Proline was the most abundant amino acid during almost the entire cycle, and its concentration was especially high during the autumn and winter period. Nevertheless, a significant part (40–60%) of the total organic nitrogen was transported as arginine. Total nitrogen as well as amino acids and nitrates were maximal at spring flush. At spring flush and summer flush there was also a diversification of α-amino nitrogen among different amino acids. During the spring flush, nitrates, asparagine and γ-aminobutyric acid in the xylem sap seemed to have a radicular origin, whereas glutamic acid and arginine were released from the surrounding parenchyma. The results suggest a metabolic transformation in the wood parenchyma of nitrogenous compounds coming from the roots (including reduction of nitrates) and a turnover of different nitrogen metabolites between the xylem and surrounding cells.

TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between chromatographic retention parameters and boiling points of the solutes is investigated for calculating retention indices in the absence of solute-stationary phase interactions, using the dielectric approach theory of non-specific solvation.
Abstract: On the basis that relationships between chromatographic retention parameters and the boiling points of the solutes are suitable for calculating retention indices in the absence of solute-stationary phase interactions, the use of several physicochemical properties of the solutes to account for the non-specific solutephase interactions according to the “dielectric approach” theory of non-specific solvation, is tested. Equations with two or more parameters, in which one of them is always the boiling point, are adjusted by the least-squares method, and their applicability to the calculation of the retention indices of the alkylbenzenes on stationary phases of different polarity is discussed on the basis of the correlation statistics.
