Abstract: As the number of fish reproduction studies has proliferated, so has the number of gonadal classification schemes and terms. This has made it difficult for both scientists and resource managers to communicate and for comparisons to be made among studies. We propose the adoption of a simple, universal terminology for the phases in the reproductive cycle, which can be applied to all male and female elasmobranch and teleost fishes. These phases were chosen because they define key milestones in the reproductive cycle; the phases include immature, developing, spawning capable, regressing, and regenerating. Although the temporal sequence of events during gamete development in each phase may vary among species, each phase has specific histological and physiological markers and is conceptually universal. The immature phase can occur only once. The developing phase signals entry into the gonadotropin-dependent stage of oogenesis and spermatogenesis and ultimately results in gonadal growth. Abstract: We present a method for finding the hierarchy of rational solutions of the self-focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation and present explicit forms for these solutions from first to fourth order. We also explain their relation to the highest amplitude part of a field that starts with a plane wave perturbed by random small amplitude radiation waves. Our work can elucidate the appearance of rogue waves in the deep ocean and can be applied to the observation of rogue light pulse waves in optical fibers.

Abstract: We analyze a sample of ~2600 MIPS/Spitzer 24mic sources brighter than ~80muJy and located in the Chandra Deep Field South to characterize the evolution of the comoving infrared (IR) energy density of the Universe up to z~1. Using published ancillary optical data we first obtain a nearly complete redshift determination for the 24mic objects associated with R 10^11 L_IR) are responsible for 70+/-15% of this energy density at z~1. Taking into account the contribution of the UV luminosity evolving as (1+z)^~2.5, we infer that these IR-luminous sources dominate the star-forming activity beyond z~0.7. The uncertainties affecting these conclusions are largely dominated by the errors in the k-corrections used to convert 24mic fluxes into luminosities.

Abstract: Gain-of-function mutations in NOTCH1 are common in T-cell lymphoblastic leukemias and lymphomas (T-ALL), making this receptor a promising target for drugs such as γ-secretase inhibitors, which block a proteolytic cleavage required for NOTCH1 activation. However, the enthusiasm for these therapies has been tempered by tumor resistance and the paucity of information on the oncogenic programs regulated by oncogenic NOTCH1. Here we show that NOTCH1 regulates the expression of PTEN (encoding phosphatase and tensin homolog) and the activity of the phosphoinositol-3 kinase (PI3K)-AKT signaling pathway in normal and leukemic T cells. Notch signaling and the PI3K-AKT pathway synergize in vivo in a Drosophila melanogaster model of Notch-induced tumorigenesis, and mutational loss of PTEN is associated with human T-ALL resistance to pharmacological inhibition of NOTCH1. Overall, these findings identify transcriptional control of PTEN and regulation of the PI3K-AKT pathway as key elements of the leukemogenic program activated by NOTCH1 and provide the basis for the design of new therapeutic strategies for T-ALL.

Abstract: In studies of animal ecology, it is fashionable to use the residuals from an ordinary least squares (OLS) linear regression of body mass against a linear measure of size (the body size indicator, BSI) as an index of body condition. These residual indices are used to study the relationship between condition and reproductive investment, survi- vorship, habitat use, and other parameters. I identify a series of key assumptions underlying the use of this method, each of which is likely to be violated in some or all studies. These assumptions are: (1) that the functional relationship between mass and BSI is linear; (2) that condition is independent of BSI length; (3) that BSI length accurately indicates struc- tural size; (4) that there is no correlation between the size of BSI relative to other structural components (i.e., shape) and the parameter against which the residuals are analyzed; (5) that BSI length is strictly independent of mass; and (6) that BSI length is not subjected to error. Violations of these assumptions place the results of some studies in question and explain the poor relationship observed between OLS residuals and more direct measures of condition. I use avian morphometric data to illustrate how OLS methods can easily lead to Type I and Type II errors through violations of assumptions (5) and (6). Significant relationships reported between OLS residual indices and parameters correlating with body size (e.g., size of sexual ornaments or egg size) are at particular risk of being spurious when the correlation coefficient between mass and BSI is low. Residual indices of condition are often likely to be more reliable when calculated with alternative methods such as nonparametric or model II regression. However, whatever the method used to produce them, residual indices are not suitable for studying the heritability of condition.
