Abstract: Recent corporate scandals have raised considerable concern among regulators and stock market participants about related party transactions (RPTs), prompting Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) to prohibit personal loans to executives and non-executive board members. In a representative sample of companies for a period that predates SOX, we find RPTs are wide spread and involve equally executives and non-executive board members; additionally, the proportion of related party loans is smaller than other non-loan related party transactions such as purchases or direct services. When we examine the relationship between RPTs and the extant literature's corporate governance mechanisms (such as board characteristics, CEO pay-performance sensitivity, and outside monitors), we generally find weaker corporate governance mechanisms associated with more and higher dollar amounts of RPTs. We also find that industry-adjusted returns are negatively associated with RPTs. On further examination of loans versus other types of RPTs not considered in SOX, we find a negative relationship between industry-adjusted returns and the number and dollar amount of loans to executives and non-executive directors, and a similar relationship between the number of other types of RPTs with non-executive directors. In summary, our results provide support for the view of RPTs as conflicts of interest between managers/board members and their shareholders, in contrast with the view of RPTs as efficient transactions.

Abstract: The development of flow instabilities during the capillary flow of two concentrated suspensions filled with 76.5 and 65.6% by volume solids was investigated. The flow instabilities manifested themselves by the development of concentration gradients as a result of the filtering of the binder, superimposed on the bulk motion of the suspension. The effects of apparent shear rate, capillary diameter and the surface roughness of the particles were investigated. The use of the comparison of the filtration rate with the bulk velocity of the suspension during flow is shown to be promising for the prediction of the apparent shear rate at which filtration-based flow instabilities occur.

Abstract: Fifth generation wireless systems (5G) must achieve high user Quality of Experience (QoE) in order to compete for market share. Each candidate 5G wireless radio frequency (RF) band offers advantages such as longer range or higher data rate than 2G, 3G, and 4G, but no single band or air interface standard by itself fully achieves ubiquitous levels of QoE for the complete range of wireless access devices. Spectrum clearing cannot keep pace with user demand, so public-private spectrum sharing is emerging as an affordable, near-term method of increasing radio access network (RAN) capacities for content delivery. This paper presents a fresh look at QoE; spectrum scarcity; public uses that underutilize candidate 5G radio frequency (RF) spectrum; and emerging public-private radio interference management frameworks that enable near-term spectrum sharing, with positive consequences for 5G price, performance, and total user QoE.

Abstract: A hydrogen-bonded layer-by-layer (LbL) technique was used to build multilayers of neutral, temperature-responsive polymers such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL), poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME), or poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) with a polycarboxylic acid such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), or poly(ethacrylic acid) (PEAA). For all multilayers involving temperature-responsive polymers, the temperature used during or after self-assembly had a significant effect on film stability with pH changes. The proximity of the self-assembly or post-self-assembly temperature to the critical temperature of phase separation of a neutral polymer from solution resulted in a higher pH stability of multilayers. However, for polymers with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) such as PNIPAM, PVCL, or PVME within PNIPAM/PMAA, PVCL/PMAA, or PVME/PMAA multilayers, the critical pH of film disintegration (pHcrit) increased in the temperature range from 10 to 37 °...

TL;DR: In this article, semi-dynamic leaching tests were conducted for artificial soils contaminated with lead oxide (PbO) in order to assess the long-term leaching behavior of lead, and the results indicated that S/S treatment was effective in immobilizing Pb and the treated soils can be considered acceptable for controlled utilization based on diffusion coefficients and leachability indices.
