Abstract: In theories of the minor phase (domain) formation in polyblends rendered as emulsions it is usually assumed that the size and shape of the domains are the result of melt viscosity effects (Taylor, Wu) or viscoelasticity effects (VanOene, Elmendorp) being balanced by interfacial tension. This assumption would predict a monotonic decrease of the domain size to a final limiting size with increasing energy of mixing. However, a systematic study of the dependence of domain morphology on industrial mixing processes which was carried out on a “model” LDPE/PS (2/1) mixture and the related polyalloy (i.e., the same mixture with a corresponding block copolymer as compatibilizer) does not support this expectation. Doirain size was found to go through a minimum as mixing energy was increased. A similar minimum was seen in data on specific volume of the melt vs. mixing energy, which indicates a correlation between melt specific volume and domain size. Calculation of the approximate surface area of the domains using a simple model of domain shape indicated that total interfacial energy in the polyblend and/or polyalloy is a trivial part of the mixing energy introduced. These calculations also indicated that if compatibilizer was located entirely at the interface, the surface layer would have a thickness of about 90 nm. Some micrographs seem to show such a surface layer. We propose that an abrasion mechanism is responsible for the early stage of the dispersion process, and that the final domain size may be controlled by a dispersion-coalescence equilibrium. This is compared with the theories of final particle size proposed by VanOene and Wu.

Abstract: With the increasing popularity of collective memory in the group behavior literature, the transactive memory system (TMS) attracts many researchers and practitioners from different fields, in particular, small group research. Nevertheless, the application of the theory of TMS on new product development teams is surprisingly scant. We argue that the TMS leverages the notion of project-team memory, which is mostly equated with mechanistic memory or electronic documents and databases, by facilitating an interpersonal awareness of who knows what and who has appropriate and adequate skills and expertise, and then receiving information from that person. We then empirically test the effects of TMS on new product development outcomes including mediating and moderating factors, i.e., the collective mind and environmental turbulence, respectively. By investigating 79 Turkish new product development project teams, we found that: 1) the TMS has a positive impact on team learning and speed-to-market; 2) the collective mind (i.e., team members’ attention to interrelating actions) mediates relations between the TMS, team learning, and speed-to-market; and 3) team learning and speed-to-market mediates relations between the TMS and new product success. Further, the moderating effect of environmental turbulence is investigated between the TMS, and team learning and speed-to-market. We found that the impact of the TMS on: 1) speed-to-market is negative when market and technology turbulence associated with the environment is high and 2) team learning changes quadratically with respect to the market and technology turbulence. Theoretical and managerial implications of the study findings are discussed.

Abstract: Compared to traditional organizations, online community leadership processes and how leaders emerge are not well studied. Previous studies of online leadership have often identified leaders as those who administer forums or have high network centrality scores. Although communication in online communities occurs almost exclusively through written words, little research has addressed how the comparative use of language shapes community dynamics. Using participant surveys to identify leading online community members, this study analyzes a year of communication network history and message content to assess whether language use differentiates leaders from other core community participants. We contribute a novel use of textual analysis to develop a model of language use to evaluate the utterances of all participants in the community. We find that beyond communication network position-in terms of formal role, centrality, membership in the core, and boundary spanning-those viewed as leaders by other participants, post a large number of positive, concise posts with simple language familiar to other participants. This research provides a model to study online language use and points to the emergent and shared nature of online community leadership.
