TL;DR: AC and biochar have a high sorption capacity for pyrene that is maintained both in the presence of soil and during harsh aging, and both materials could therefore be considered in contaminated land remediation.
Abstract: In this study, the suitability of biochar and activated carbon (AC) for contaminated soil remediation is investigated by determining the sorption of pyrene to both materials in the presence and absence of soil and before as well as after aging. Biochar and AC were aged either aloneor mixed withsoilvia exposure to (a) nutrients andmicroorganisms (biological),(b)60 and 110 C (chemical), and (c) freezethaw cycles (physical). Before and after aging, the pH, elementalcomposition, cationexchange capacity(CEC),microporousSA,andsorptionisothermsofpyrenewerequantified.Aging at 110 C altered the physicochemical properties of all materials to the greatest extent (for example, pH increased by up to three unitsandCECbyupto50%forbiochar).LogarithmicKFrvaluesrangedfrom7.80to8.21(ngkg 1 )(ngL 1 ) nF forACand5.22to 6.21 (ng kg 1 )(ng L 1 ) nF for biochar after the various aging regimes. Grinding biochar to a smaller particle size did not significantly affect the sorption of d10 pyrene, implying that sorption processes operate on the subparticle scale. Chemical aging decreased the sorption of pyrene to the greatest extent (up to 1.8 log unit for the biochar+soil). The sorption to AC was affected morebythe presence ofsoilthan the sorptiontobiochar was. Ourresultssuggest thatAC and biochar have ahigh sorptioncapacity for pyrene that is maintained both in the presence of soil and during harsh aging. Both materials could therefore be considered in contaminated land remediation.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that carbonic anhydrases function early in the CO2 signalling pathway, which controls gas-exchange between plants and the atmosphere, and patch clamp analyses indicate that CO2/HCO3− transfers the signal to anion channel regulation.
Abstract: In response to CO2, leaves close their stomatal pores but the CO2-binding proteins and the cell type responsible for this effect have not been identified. Expression of β-carbonic anhydrase in guard cells modulates the CO2-mediated regulation of stomatal movements.

TL;DR: It can be concluded that episodic memory is unique in showing an age deficit, and is the only memory system showing gender differences in performance throughout the adult life span with a significantly higher performance for women.
Abstract: Basic findings obtained on memory functions in normal aging are presented and discussed with respect to five separate but interacting memory systems. These systems are: episodic memory, semantic memory, short-term memory, perceptual representation system and procedural memory. All available evidence from cross-sectional research shows that there is a linear, decreasing memory performance as a function of age for episodic memory. Longitudinal studies suggest, however, that this age deficit may be an overestimation, by showing a relatively stable performance level up to middle age, followed by a sharp decline. Studies on semantic memory, short-term memory, perceptual representation system, and procedural memory show a relatively constant performance level across the adult life span, although some tasks used to assess short-term memory and procedural memory have revealed an age deficit. Disregarding the mixed results for these latter two memory systems, it can be concluded that episodic memory is unique in showing an age deficit. Episodic memory is also unique in the sense that it is the only memory system showing gender differences in performance throughout the adult life span with a significantly higher performance for women.
