Smart nanocarrier based on PEGylated hyaluronic acid for cancer therapy.

Abstract: Tumor targetability and site-specific drug release of therapeutic nanoparticles are key factors for effective cancer therapy. In this study, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-conjugated hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (P-HA-NPs) were investigated as carriers for anticancer drugs including doxorubicin and camptothecin (CPT). P-HA-NPs were internalized into cancer cells (SCC7 and MDA-MB-231) via receptor-mediated endocytosis, but were rarely taken up by normal fibroblasts (NIH-3T3). During in vitro drug release tests, P-HA-NPs rapidly released drugs when incubated with cancer cells, extracts of tumor tissues, or the enzyme Hyal-1, which is abundant in the intracellular compartments of cancer cells. CPT-loaded P-HA-NPs (CPT-P-HA-NPs) showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity to cancer cells (MDA-MB-231, SCC7, and HCT 116) and significantly lower cytotoxicity against normal fibroblasts (NIH-3T3) than free CPT. Stretchable Graphene Transistors with Printed Dielectrics and Gate Electrodes

Abstract: With the emergence of human interface technology, the development of new applications based on stretchable electronics such as conformal biosensors and rollable displays are required. However, the difficulty in developing semiconducting materials with high stretchability required for such applications has restricted the range of applications of stretchable electronics. Here, we present stretchable, printable, and transparent transistors composed of monolithically patterned graphene films. This material offers excellent mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, capable of use as semiconducting channels as well as the source/drain electrodes. Such monolithic graphene transistors show hole and electron mobilities of 1188 ± 136 and 422 ± 52 cm2/(V s), respectively, with stable operation at stretching up to 5% even after 1000 or more cycles.

Alternative Origins to Interorganizational Trust: An Interdependence Perspective on the Shadow of the Past and the Shadow of the Future

Abstract: Despite the widespread acceptance of trust as an informal governance institution, our understanding of its origins is nascent. Our review of the literature identified two distinct explanations: Trust emerges from either a shadow of the past (i.e., prior history) or a shadow of the future (i.e., expectations of continuity). In this paper we develop and empirically examine a third perspective: The potential interdependence of these two explanations. Our results strongly endorse this third perspective. We find that prior history does not directly affect trust; instead, the observed positive relationship between the two is mediated by expectations of continuity. Consistent with this result, analyses further show that a longer prior history makes the effect of continuity on trust much stronger than a shorter prior history. We interpret these findings as suggesting: (1) the criticality and centrality of a shadow of the future (i.e., a forward-looking calculus) in generating trust in interorganizational exchanges and (2) that a shadow of the past plays a facilitating, albeit indirect, role in trust building. Our conceptual model also extends the conventional use of the transaction cost logic to show how reciprocal investments in asset specificity and uncertainty drive expectations of continuity, and consequently, interorganizational trust. Our results also show, unexpectedly, that prior history has a direct negative effect on trust after specifying the mediating path of continuity. Our moderation analysis indicates when this effect occurs: When weak expectations of continuity exist, trust is lower for exchanges characterized by a longer prior history, suggesting a potential darkside of overembedded ties.
