TL;DR: The study shows that the saliva microbiota is diverse 2 days after birth and under transformation up to 5 years of age and beyond, with fluctuations possibly reflecting age-related environmental influences.
Abstract: Understanding oral microbiota programming attracts increasing interest due to its importance for oral health and potential associations with systemic diseases. Here the oral microbiota was longitudinally characterized in children from 2 days (n = 206) to 5 years of age and in young adults (n = 175) by sequencing of the v3-v4 region of the 16S rRNA gene from saliva extracted DNA. Alpha diversity increased by age, with 2-day- and 3-month-old infants in one sub-group, and 18-month- and 3-year-old children in another. Firmicutes decreased up to 3 years of age, whereas Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria abundances increased. Abiotrophia, Actinomyces, Capnocytophaga, Corynebacterium, Fusobacterium, Kingella, Leptotrichia, Neisseria and Porphyromonas appeared from 18-months of age. This was paralleled by expansions in the core microbiome that continued up to adulthood. The age-related microbiota transformation was paralleled by functional alterations, e.g., changed metabolic pathways that reflected e.g., breastfeeding and increasing proportions of anaerobic species. Oral microbiotas differed by feeding mode and weakly by mode of delivery, but not gender, pacifier use or cleaning method or probiotic intake. The study shows that the saliva microbiota is diverse 2 days after birth and under transformation up to 5 years of age and beyond, with fluctuations possibly reflecting age-related environmental influences.

19 Mar 2011TL;DR: The parameter estimation variance of the Single Point Active Alignment Method (SPAAM) is studied through an experiment where 11 subjects are instructed to create alignments using an Optical See-Through Head Mounted Display such that three separate correspondence point distributions are acquired.
Abstract: The parameter estimation variance of the Single Point Active Alignment Method (SPAAM) is studied through an experiment where 11 subjects are instructed to create alignments using an Optical See-Through Head Mounted Display (OSTHMD) such that three separate correspondence point distributions are acquired. Modeling the OSTHMD and the subject's dominant eye as a pinhole camera, findings show that a correspondence point distribution well distributed along the user's line of sight yields less variant parameter estimates. The estimated eye point location is studied in particular detail. The findings of the experiment are complemented with simulated data which show that image plane orientation is sensitive to the number of correspondence points. The simulated data also illustrates some interesting properties on the numerical stability of the calibration problem as a function of alignment noise, number of correspondence points, and correspondence point distribution.

08 Jul 2003TL;DR: In this paper, an evidential force aggregation method intended for classification of evidential intelligence into recognized force structures was developed, based on a measure of fitness between template and fused intelligence that makes it possible to handle intelligence reports with multiple nonspecific and uncertain propositions.
Abstract: In this paper we develop an evidential force aggregation method intended for classification of evidential intelligence into recognized force structures. We assume that the intelligence has already been partitioned into clusters and use the classification method individually in each cluster. The classification is based on a measure of fitness between template and fused intelligence that makes it possible to handle intelligence reports with multiple nonspecific and uncertain propositions. With this measure we can aggregate on a level-by-level basis, starting from general intelligence to achieve a complete force structure with recognized units on all hierarchical levels.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method using a preconcentration resin and low energy gamma-spectrometry was developed to a fast determination of certain nuclides in soil samples, such as 241Am and 235U.
Abstract: For preparedness purposes, a fast and reliable method is essential to quickly assess radioactive fallout in the environment. The rapid determination of certain nuclides such as alpha-emitting actinides is necessary to make initial environmental and agricultural advisories. Therefore, a method using a preconcentration resin and low energy gamma-spectrometry was developed to a fast determination of certain nuclides in soil samples. The preconcentration resin allows samples to be partially purified and then directly measured by gamma-spectrometry without further extraction or separation. The initial gamma-measurement provides fast and accurate determination of certain nuclides such as 241Am and 235U which are normally analyzed by alpha-spectrometry, but require additional time-consuming purification and separation steps. After gamma-spectrometry, the sample may be further processed and analyzed by traditional methods to determine actinides or other nuclides more precisely.
