Abstract: The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) specifies that radioxenon measurements should be performed at 40 or more stations worldwide within the International Monitoring System (IMS). Measuring radioxenon is one of the principle techniques to detect underground nuclear explosions. Specifically, presence and ratios of different radioxenon isotopes allows determining whether a detection event under consideration originated from a nuclear explosion or a civilian source. However, radioxenon monitoring on a global scale is a novel technology and the global civil background must be characterized sufficiently. This paper lays out a study, based on several unique measurement campaigns, of the worldwide concentrations and sources of verification relevant xenon isotopes. It complements the experience already gathered with radioxenon measurements within the CTBT IMS programme and focuses on locations in Belgium, Germany, Kuwait, Thailand and South Africa where very little information was available on ambient xenon levels or interesting sites offered opportunities to learn more about emissions from known sources. The findings corroborate the hypothesis that a few major radioxenon sources contribute in great part to the global radioxenon background. Additionally, the existence of independent sources of 131mXe (the daughter of 131I) has been demonstrated, which has some potential to bias the isotopic signature of signals from nuclear explosions.

Abstract: Developments in the area of signature suppression make it progressively more difficult to recognize targets. The emphasis has been on the reduction of distinct features, like hot spots in the infrared band. Thus, to obtain a low false alarm rate, threat sensors have to utilize more information, i.e., spatial and spectral properties. The purpose of our work is to develop a general tool for camouflage assessment. The approach proposed applies texture descriptors to quantify the similarity between different parts of an image. In addition, other descriptors are used to distinguish man-made object characteristics. The selection of an appropriate set of features is discussed. The assumption is that an area containing observable targets has different statistics than other areas. Statistical properties along with detected target specific features have to be combined with methods used in data fusion. An experiment with a dataset of 44 reference images has been carried out, using a recently developed computer program called Terrtex. High correlation with perception experiments is achieved using only one or two texture features. The importance of a careful selection of background area size is finally discussed. Abstract: Time-correlated single-photon counting lidar provides very high-resolution range measurements, making the technology interesting for 3D imaging of objects behind foliage or other obscuration. We study six peak detection approaches and compare their performance from several perspectives: detection of double surfaces within the instantaneous field of view, range accuracy, performance under sparse sampling, and the number of outliers. The results presented are based on reference measurements of a characterization target. Special consideration is given to the possibility of resolving two surfaces closely separated in range within the field of view of a single pixel. An approach based on fitting a linear combination of impulse response functions to the collected data showed the best overall performance.

Abstract: Francisella noatunensis is a fastidious facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes ‘piscine francisellosis’, a serious disease affecting both marine and fresh water farmed and wild fish worldwide. Currently two F. noatunensis subspecies are recognized, i.e. F. noatunensis subsp. noatunensis and F. noatunensis subsp. orientalis . In the present study, the taxonomy of F. noatunensis was revisited using a polyphasic approach, including whole genome derived parameters such as digital DNA–DNA hybridization, whole genome average nucleotide identity (wg-ANIm), whole genome phylogenetic analysis, whole genome G+C content, metabolic fingerprinting and chemotaxonomic analyses. The results indicated that isolates belonging to F. noatunensis subsp. orientalis represent a phenotypically and genetically homogenous taxon, clearly distinguishable from F. noatunensis subsp. noatunensis that fulfils requirements for separate species status. We propose, therefore, elevation of F. noatunensis subsp. orientalis to the species rank as Francisella orientalis sp. nov. with the type strain remaining as Ehime-1T (DSM 21254T=LMG 24544T). Furthermore, we identified sufficient phenotypic and genetic differences between F. noatunensis subsp. noatunensis recovered from diseased farmed Atlantic salmon in Chile and those isolated from wild and farmed Atlantic cod in Northern Europe to warrant proposal of the Chilean as a novel F. noatunensis subspecies, i.e. Francisella noatunensis subsp. chilensis subsp. nov. with strain PQ1106T (CECT 9798T=NCTC14375T) as the type strain. Finally, we emend the description of F. noatunensis by including further metabolic information and the description of atypical strains.
