Abstract: We describe an extensive data collection and analysis of change detection using VHF- and UHF-band SAR data. Two airborne systems (CARABAS-II: 22-82 MHz, LORA: 225-470 MHz) acquired data for multiple headings and incidence angles. Twenty one targets of five types were deployed in forest concealment. CARABAS-II gives the best performance for the target types investigated. Analysis of the data shows that performance degrades for increasing incidence angle, mainly due to reduced target radar cross-section. It is also shown that different change detectors give different performances. The best detector for one incidence angle is not necessarily best for another incidence angle.

Abstract: The evolution and control of a two-dimensional wave packet developing on a flat plate with a leading edge is investigated by means of direct numerical simulation. The aim is to identify and suppress the wave packets generated by freestream perturbations. A sensor is placed close to the wall to detect the upcoming wave packet, while an actuator is placed further downstream to control it. A plasma actuator is modeled as an external forcing on the flow using a model based and validated on experimental investigations. A linear quadratic Gaussian controller is designed, and an output projection is used to build the objective function. Moreover, by appropriate selection of the proper orthogonal decomposition modes, we identify the disturbances to be damped. A reduced-order model of the input–output system is constructed by using system identification via the eigensystem realization algorithm. Abstract: To study the performance of compact systems for microwave generation, a series of experiments have been performed with a microwave source powered directly by a Marx generator. The system consists of a 20-stage 400-kV/400-J Marx generator, a powerful 40-kV charger, a reflex triode, and a vircator-type microwave source. Different parametric studies were performed such as variation of the anode-cathode distances and the emitting area of the cathode. The results have been analyzed and compared to an equivalent electric circuit model of the system. The experiments, generating microwave frequencies between 3 and 5 GHz, can be fairly accurately reproduced by the model both in terms of discharge currents and microwave frequencies

Abstract: To increase the awareness of society to the challenges of global food security, we developed five contrasting global and European scenarios for 2050 and used these to identify important issues for future agricultural research. Using a scenario development method known as morphological analysis, scenarios were constructed that took economic, political, technical, and environmental factors into account. With the scenarios as a starting point future challenges were discussed and research issues and questions were identified in an interactive process with stakeholders and researchers. Based on the outcome of this process, six socioeconomic and biophysical overarching challenges for future agricultural were formulated and related research issues identified. The outcome was compared with research priorities generated in five other research programs. In comparison, our research questions focus more on societal values and the role of consumers in influencing agricultural production, as well as on policy formulation and resolving conflicting goals, areas that are presently under-represented in agricultural research. The partly new and more interdisciplinary research priorities identified in Future Agriculture compared to other programs analyzed are likely a result of the methodological approach used, combining scenarios and interaction between stakeholders and researchers.
