Abstract: Embedded systems are specialized computers used in larger systems or machines to control equipments such as automobiles, home appliances, communication, control and office machines. Such pervasivity is particularly evident in immersive realities, i.e., scenarios in which invisible embedded systems need to continuously interact with human users, in order to provide continuous sensed information and to react to service requests from the users themselves. The SM4All project investigates an innovative middleware platform for inter-working of smart embedded services in immersive and person-centric environments, through the use of composability and semantic techniques for dynamic service reconfiguration. This is applied to the challenging scenario of private houses and home-care assistance in presence of users with different abilities and needs (e.g., young, able-bodied, aged and disabled). This paper presentes a brief overview of the SM4All system architecture.

Abstract: This paper presents a self-tuning technique for optimization of a dual band LNA that can be used in a flexible RF front-end suitable for IEEE 802.11a/b/g WLAN applications. With this tuning technique the LNA can perform self-calibration for the optimal performance. A possible shift in resonance frequency due to process and temperature variations can be compensated by this method. The proposed self-tuning technique is implemented by using a simple RF detector at the LNA output. Based on the DC value provided by this detector the LNA is tuned for a maximum gain through the tuning loop, which incorporates ADC, digital base-band and DAC. We show that the tuning error can be within half LSB of ADC provided the DAC and ADC resolutions are constraint by a specified condition. For 4-bit case this value corresponds to a gain error of 0.4 dB. The LNA has been implemented in 0.2 mum GaAs process offered by OMMICtrade. In measurements the LNA achieves a gain of 15.1 dB and 21.6 dB in the upper and lower band, respectively, with corresponding NF of 3.8 dB and 2.8 dB. In the lower band the measured IIP3 is -3 dBm and 1 dB_CP is -8 dBm.

Abstract: The design of a generic mechanism for platform-based data fusion and sensor management is described. It is based on the duality between two types of agents, task agents and sensor agents. Task agents buy information from sensor agents that sell it, and sensors produce information that tasks consume. These buy and sell interactions occur very frequently for systems involving sensors that work with small action durations. When several sensors are available, the sell/buy interaction involve selection and scheduling of sensors. The task concept is similar to the old decision or OODA (observe/orient/decide/act) loop that has since long been used for understanding human participation in complex command and control problems. A task might be described as a tiny OODA loop, with predefined purpose and processing capability. There are numerous task types, each dedicated to a certain skill or sensor process. The design is evaluated in single and multiplatform applications.

Abstract: The long co-existence of bacteria and protozoa has led to the development of bacterial protozoa resistance strategies, which are suggested to serve as drivers for the evolution of pathogenic bacteria. However, the ecological mechanisms underpinning selection for protozoa-resistance in aquatic bacteria are poorly known. To assess the role of nutrient availability and predation-pressure on selection for protozoa-resisting bacteria (PRB), an enrichment-dilution experiment was designed using laboratory microcosms containing natural lake water. PRB was monitored by screening 16S rRNA amplicon sequence data for reads assigned to bacteria that previously has been shown to resist degradation by amoebae. To estimate the effects of the microbial food web dynamics (microscopy of; heterotrophic bacteria, phytoplankton, protozoa and rotifers) and physicochemical variables on the PRB abundance in the study system, a joint species distribution modelling approach was used. The predation-pressure (ratio between predator and bacterial biomass) had a positive effect on the abundance of the PRB genus Mycobacterium, while perturbation (enrichment and dilution) favored the PRB genus Pseudomonas that dominated the bacterial community in the disturbed systems. Our results show that PRB with different ecological strategies can be expected in water of high and intermediate nutrient levels and after major disturbances of an aquatic system.
