TL;DR: In this paper, a search for new physics in multijet events with large missing transverse momentum produced in proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC.
Abstract: A search for new physics is performed in multijet events with large missing transverse momentum produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=8 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample is divided into three jet multiplicity categories (3-5, 6-7, and 8 or more jets), and studied further in bins of two variables: the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta and the missing transverse momentum. The observed numbers of events in various categories are consistent with backgrounds expected from standard model processes. Exclusion limits are presented for several simplified supersymmetric models of squark or gluino pair production.

TL;DR: A lattice F in a linear semi-simple group is said to be irreducible if no subgroup of F of finite index is a direct product of two infinite normal subgroups as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A discrete subgroup F of a locally compact topological group G is said to be a lattice in G if the homogeneous space G/F carries a finite G-invariant measure. A lattice F in G is said to be uniform (or co-compact) if G/F is compact; otherwise it is said to be non-uniform. A lattice F in a linear semi-simple group is said to be irreducible if no subgroup of F of finite index is a direct product of two infinite normal subgroups. Let G be a linear analytic semi-simple group which has trivial center and no compact factors, given a lattice A in G it is known that G decomposes into a direct p r o d u c t / / G i , such that for all i, Gi is a normal analytic subgroup of G; Ai=Ac~Gi is an irreducible lattice in G~ and llAi is a subgroup of A of finite index. Furthermore, if G = 1~ Gj is any decom-

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the microscopic formulation of the five dimensional black hole of type IIB string theory in terms of the D1-D5 brane system and show how the low energy brane dynamics combined with crucial inputs from AdS/CFT correspondence leads to a derivation of black hole thermodynamics and the rate of Hawking radiation.
Abstract: In this Report we review the microscopic formulation of the five dimensional black hole of type IIB string theory in terms of the D1-D5 brane system. The emphasis here is more on the brane dynamics than on supergravity solutions. We show how the low energy brane dynamics, combined with crucial inputs from AdS/CFT correspondence, leads to a derivation of black hole thermodynamics and the rate of Hawking radiation. Our approach requires a detailed exposition of the gauge theory and conformal field theory of the D1-D5 system. We also discuss some applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence in the context of black hole formation in three dimensions by thermal transition and by collision of point particles.

TL;DR: O observation of the electroweak production of single top quarks in pp[over ] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV based on 2.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider is reported.
Abstract: We report observation of the electroweak production of single top quarks in pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV based on 2.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Using events containing an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse energy, together with jets originating from the fragmentation of b quarks, we measure a cross section of sigma(pp -> tb+X,tqb+X)=3.94 +/- 0.88 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of signal is 2.5x10(-7), corresponding to a 5.0 standard deviation significance for the observation.

TL;DR: In this paper, a search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to bb¯ when produced in association with a weak vector boson (V) is reported for the following channels: W(μν)H, W(eν), W(τν), H, Z(μμ), Z(ee, H, and Z(νν), where the search is performed in data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 inverse femtobarns at s√=7
Abstract: A search for the standard model Higgs boson (H) decaying to bb¯ when produced in association with a weak vector boson (V) is reported for the following channels: W(μν)H, W(eν)H, W(τν)H, Z(μμ)H, Z(ee)H, and Z(νν)H. The search is performed in data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 inverse femtobarns at s√=7 TeV and up to 18.9 fb−1 at s√=8 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. An excess of events is observed above the expected background with a local significance of 2.1 standard deviations for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, consistent with the expectation from the production of the standard model Higgs boson. The signal strength corresponding to this excess, relative to that of the standard model Higgs boson, is 1.0±0.5.
