Abstract: Tumorigenicity of isoniazid in Swiss and A strain mice was studied with three different doses (0.55, 1.1 and 2.2 mg/mouse/day). Mice were fed isoniazid by gastric intubation and killed when they appeared weak. Incidence of tumour ranged from 32 to 100%. Subsequently sex-specificity in isoniazid tumorigenicity was also studied as well as the effect of vitamin B complex or protein deficiency, and of transplacental exposure of Swiss strain embryos to isoniazid. It was observed that protein deficiency and transplacental exposure stimulated tumour incidence in mice treated with 0.55 mg of isoniazid. No sex specificity was observed in isoniazid tumorigenesis.

Abstract: During the 10-year period from 1966-1975, 250 patients with various head and neck cancers were treated by intra-arterial chemotherapy using single agents or various combinations. Only 15 patients showed response of I-C category according to Karnofsky's criteria, and 100 patients had I-B response. Another 100 patients showed I-A category of response and 35 patients had progressive disease out of which 5 patients exhibited excessive toxicity to drugs, eventually succumbing to it. A majority of patients in nonresponding (O-O) category and I-A category were earlier treated by radiotherapy, and intra-arterial chemotherapy was given for recurrent disease. The responses were relatively good whenever chemotherapy was given as a primary treatment before surgery and radiotherapy. Again response was additive when chemotherapy was given concurrently with radiotherapy.

Abstract: An analysis of the staging procedure in 80 patients with histologically confirmed Hodgkin disease was performed at Tata Memorial Hospital, Bombay. There was a marked male preponderance. The mixed cellularity type of Hodgkin disease is the commonest histological variety (47.5%) and has the highest incidence of subsequently proven generalized disease (76%). The lymphocytic predominant variety was the next most common (27.5%) and was present as unsuspected disease in 45% of cases. Systemic symptoms were associated with advanced disease in 57% of clinical IB and 73% of clinical IIB cases. Splenic involvement was histologically confirmed in 41% of cases with stage I disease and 52% of cases with stage II disease and was associated with liver involvement in two cases. A lymphogram was performed, in addition, prior to the laparotomy in 40 cases and the lymphogram-laparotomy concordance was approximately 72% in our series. This stresses the importance of a staging laparotomy.

Abstract: Leukaemia specific antigens have been isolated from the membranes of dinitrophenylated normal human leukocytes (104 molecules of l-fluoro, -2, 4-dinitrobenzene per cell). Affinity chromatography on antibody-sepharose column separated two macromolecular moieties with molecular weights of 21000 and 48000. The isolated antigens elicited immune response specific against human leukaemic cells. The use of oil-in-water emulsion with isolated antigens was essential during immunization to achieve appropriate hydrophylic-hydrophobic conformation similar to that seen on the native cell surfaces.
