Abstract: This paper describes the design of a (4-kV, 4.16-MVA) three-level neutral-point-clamped-, three-level flying-capacitor-, four-level flying-capacitor-, and nine-level seriesconnected H-bridge voltage-source converter on the basis of state-of-the-art 6.5-, 4.5-, 3.3- and 1.7-kV insulated gate bipolar transistors. The semiconductor loss distribution and the design of semiconductors and passive components are compared for a medium switching frequency assuming a constant converter efficiency of about 99%. To evaluate the converter characteristics in high switching frequency applications, a second comparison is realized for the maximum switching frequencies assuming a constant expense of semiconductors in all converters.

Abstract: Crucial steps in geochemical cycles are in many cases performed by more than one group of microorganisms, but the significance of this functional redundancy with respect to ecosystem functioning is poorly understood. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and their bacterial counterparts (AOB) are a perfect system to address this question: although performing the same transformation step, they belong to well-separated phylogenetic groups. Using pig manure amended with different concentrations of sulfadiazine (SDZ), an antibiotic that is frequently used in veterinary medicine, it was possible to affect AOB and AOA to different degrees. Addition of manure stimulated growth of AOB in both soils and, interestingly, also growth of AOA was considerably stimulated in one of the soils. The antibiotic treatments decreased the manure effect notably on AOB, whereas AOA were affected to a lower extent. Model calculations concerning the respective proportions of AOA and AOB in ammonia oxidation indicate a substantial contribution of AOA in one of the soils that further increased under the influence of SDZ, hence indicating functional redundancy between AOA and AOB.

Abstract: Peptide antibiotics are known to contain non-protein amino acids, D-amino acids, hydroxy acids, and other unusual constituents. In addition they may be modified by N-methylation and cyclization reactions. Their biosynthetic origin has been connected in many cases to an enzymatic system referred to as the 'thiotemplate multienzymic mechanism'. This mechanism includes the activation of the constituent residues as adenylates on the enzymic template, the acylation of specific template thiol groups, epimerization or N-methylation at this thioester stage, and polymerization in the sequence directed by the multienzymic structure with the aid of 4'-phosphopantetheine as a cofactor, including possible cyclization or terminal modification reactions. The reaction sequences leading to gramicidin S, tyrocidine, cyclosporine, bacitracin, polymyxin, actinomycin, enniatin, beauvericin, delta-(L-alpha-aminoadipyl)-L-cysteinyl-D-valine and linear gramicidin are discussed. The structures of the multienzymes, their genetic organization, the biological functions of these peptides and results on related systems are discussed.
