TL;DR: In this paper, the atomic-scale structural evolution of well-defined CoOx(OH)y compounds into their catalytically active state during electrocatalytic operation through operando and surface-sensitive X-ray spectroscopy and surface voltammetry, supported by theoretical calculations.
Abstract: Efficient catalysts for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical for electrochemical H2 production. Their design requires structural knowledge of their catalytically active sites and state. Here, we track the atomic-scale structural evolution of well-defined CoOx(OH)y compounds into their catalytically active state during electrocatalytic operation through operando and surface-sensitive X-ray spectroscopy and surface voltammetry, supported by theoretical calculations. We find clear voltammetric evidence that electrochemically reducible near-surface Co3+–O sites play an organizing role for high OER activity. These sites invariably emerge independent of initial metal valency and coordination under catalytic OER conditions. Combining experiments and theory reveals the unified chemical structure motif as µ2-OH-bridged Co2+/3+ ion clusters formed on all three-dimensional cross-linked and layered CoOx(OH)y precursors and present in an oxidized form during the OER, as shown by operando X-ray spectroscopy. Together, the spectroscopic and electrochemical fingerprints offer a unified picture of our molecular understanding of the structure of catalytically active metal oxide OER sites. Knowledge of the active sites in catalysts—including the sites that form under working conditions—is vital for future design and development. Here, the authors track the atomic-scale changes in a series of well-defined cobalt-based oxide electrocatalysts, showing that the structurally distinct catalysts develop a similar structural motif as they transform into the catalytically active state.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate the importance of minor components in crude seed oils on their oxidative stability, which will reflect on their food value and shelf life and the Maillard reaction products may have contributed to the RSA of seed oils and their polar fractions.
Abstract: Crude vegetable oils are usually oxidatively more stable than the corresponding refined oils. Tocopherols, phospholipids (PL), phytosterols, and phenols are the most important natural antioxidants in crude oils. Processing of vegetable oils, moreover, could induce the formation of antioxidants. Black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), and niger (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) crude seed oils were extracted with n-hexane and the oils were further fractionated into neutral lipids (NL), glycolipids (GL), and PL. Crude oils and their fractions were investigated for their radical scavenging activity (RSA) toward the stable galvinoxyl radical by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry and toward 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical by spectrophotometric method. Coriander seed oil and its fractions exhibited the strongest RSA compared to black cumin and niger seed oils. The data correlated well with the total content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, unsaponifiables, and PL, as well as the initial peroxide values of crude oils. In overall ranking, RSA of oil fractions showed similar patterns wherein the PL exhibited greater activity to scavenge both free radicals followed by GL and NL, respectively. The positive relationship observed between the RSA of crude oils and their color intensity suggests the Maillard reaction products may have contributed to the RSA of seed oils and their polar fractions. The results demonstrate the importance of minor components in crude seed oils on their oxidative stability, which will reflect on their food value and shelf life. As part of the effort to assess the potential of these seed oils, the information is also of importance in processing and utilizing the crude oils and their byproducts.

TL;DR: This review article focuses on microporous polymers which are solution-processable, can be produced as thin films on electrodes by oxidative polymerizations, are π-conjugated organic semiconductors, or which provide the possibility to introduce and exploit distinct functional groups in an otherwise non-functional highly porous environment.
Abstract: Microporous polymers are covalently bound, entirely organic materials which possess very high surface areas. These materials have been intensively studied within recent years and various interesting properties and possible applications have been discovered and described. This review article starts with the question, what makes microporous polymers special and are there certain features which differentiate them from other microporous materials? Indeed, there are some special structural and functional features found in microporous polymers which make them really unique and merit further exploration. We focus here on microporous polymers which are solution-processable, can be produced as thin films on electrodes by oxidative polymerizations, are π-conjugated organic semiconductors, or which provide the possibility to introduce and exploit distinct functional groups in an otherwise non-functional highly porous environment. Emerging applications for these microporous polymers which make explicit use of these unique features are further presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, an empirical approach to establish the existence of a universal calibration function for TDR soil moisture measurement is presented. But the practical aspects of the measurement calibration are discussed, and an empirical method to establish a universal calibrator for soil moisture measurements is discussed.
Abstract: SUMMARY The paper is addressed to soil scientists who use Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technology to measure soil moisture. The practical aspects of the measurement calibration are discussed, and an empirical approach to establishing the existence of a universal calibration function is presented. Samples of 11 mineral soil horizons and seven organic soil horizons with different chemical and physical properties (including magnetic properties) were selected with the aim of determining their dielectric constant-volumetric water content relationship as calibration functions for TDR soil moisture measurements. These samples were supplemented by other, soil-like, capillary-porous reference materials (montmorillonite, glass beads, washed sand and a sand from a C horizon). The study showed that a unique calibration function for mineral soils and another distinct calibration function for organic soils can be established.

TL;DR: A new strategy to achieve reversible Mg2+ and Al3+ insertion in anatase TiO2 is demonstrated, achieved through aliovalent doping, to introduce a large number of titanium vacancies that act as intercalation sites.
Abstract: In contrast to monovalent lithium or sodium ions, the reversible insertion of multivalent ions such as Mg2+ and Al3+ into electrode materials remains an elusive goal. Here, we demonstrate a new strategy to achieve reversible Mg2+ and Al3+ insertion in anatase TiO2, achieved through aliovalent doping, to introduce a large number of titanium vacancies that act as intercalation sites. We present a broad range of experimental and theoretical characterizations that show a preferential insertion of multivalent ions into titanium vacancies, allowing a much greater capacity to be obtained compared to pure TiO2. This result highlights the possibility to use the chemistry of defects to unlock the electrochemical activity of known materials, providing a new strategy for the chemical design of materials for practical multivalent batteries.
