Abstract: Diffractive electroproduction of rho and phi mesons is measured at HERA with the H1 detector in the elastic and proton dissociative channels. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51 pb^-1. About 10500 rho and 2000 phi events are analysed in the kinematic range of squared photon virtuality 2.5 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2, photon-proton centre of mass energy 35 < W < 180 GeV and squared four-momentum transfer to the proton |t| < 3 GeV^2. The total, longitudinal and transverse cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2, W and |t|. The measurements show a transition to a dominantly "hard" behaviour, typical of high gluon densities and small q\bar{q} dipoles, for Q^2 larger than 10 to 20 GeV^2. They support flavour independence of the diffractive exchange, expressed in terms of the scaling variable (Q^2 + M_V^2)/4, and proton vertex factorisation. The spin density matrix elements are measured as a function of kinematic variables. The ratio of the longitudinal to transverse cross sections, the ratio of the helicity amplitudes and their relative phases are extracted. Several of these measurements have not been performed before and bring new information on the dynamics of diffraction in a QCD framework. The measurements are discussed in the context of models using generalised parton distributions or universal dipole cross sections.

Abstract: Onehundred-and-thirteen patients with cancer of the urinary bladder (cases) were examined with respect to the frequency of null genotypes of the polymorphic glutathione S-transferases GSTM1 and GSTT1. The allelic background in the German population of the area was evaluated by analysing 170 newborns (controls). The frequency of GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes in this population, using methods based upon internal standard controlled polymerase chain reaction (PCR), was 0.54 and 0.18 respectively. An elevated relative bladder cancer risk of GSTM1 null genotype carriers was indicated by comparison of this background with the data of the bladder cancer cases (OR = 1.81; 95% CI [1.10, 2.98]; p = 0.019). The frequencies of the GSTT1 null genotype in the total group of bladder cancer cases versus controls did not differ statistically. However, a significantly higher relative risk of bladder cancer for the GSTT1 null genotype was detected in the cases-subgroup of non-smokers (OR = 3.84; 95% CI [1.21, 12.23]; p = 0.023). Thus, the GSTT1 null genotype might represent a minor risk factor for human bladder cancer which should be further investigated.

Abstract: In academic studies, the evaluation of recommender system (RS) algorithms is often limited to offline experimental designs based on historical data sets and metrics from the fields of Machine Learning or Information Retrieval. In real-world settings, however, other business-oriented metrics such as click-through-rates, customer retention or effects on the sales spectrum might be the true evaluation criteria for RS effectiveness. In this paper, we compare different RS algorithms with respect to their tendency of focusing on certain parts of the product spectrum. Our first analysis on different data sets shows that some algorithms – while able to generate highly accurate predictions – concentrate their top 10 recommendations on a very small fraction of the product catalog or have a strong bias to recommending only relatively popular items than others. We see our work as a further step toward multiple-metric offline evaluation and to help service providers make better-informed decisions when looking for a recommendation strategy that is in line with the overall goals of the recommendation service.

Abstract: With the increasing aging of the population, the number of older drivers is rising. Driving is a significant factor for quality of life and independence concerning social and working life. On the other hand, driving is a complex task involving visual, motor, and cognitive skills that experience age-related changes even in healthy aging. In this review we summarize different age-related functional changes with relevance for driving concerning sensory, motor, and cognitive functions. Since these functions have great interindividual variability, it is necessary to apply methods that help to identify older drivers with impaired driving abilities in order to take appropriate measures. We discuss three different methods to assess driving ability, namely the assessment of (i) functions relevant for driving; (ii) driving behavior in real traffic; and (iii) behavior in a driving simulator. We present different measures to improve mobility in older drivers, including information campaigns, design of traffic and car environment, instructions, functional training, and driving training in real traffic and in a driving simulator. Finally, we give some recommendations for assessing and improving the driving abilities of older drivers with multi-modal approaches being most promising for enhancing individual and public safety.
