Abstract: We analyze the recent experimental evidence for an excess of τ -lepton production in several exclusive semileptonic B-meson decays in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models. These decay modes are sensitive to the exchange of charged scalars and constrain strongly their Yukawa interactions. While the usual Type-II scenario cannot accommodate the recent BaBar data, this is possible within more general models in which the charged-scalar couplings to up-type quarks are not as suppressed. Both the B → D (*) τν τ and the B → τν τ data can be fitted within the framework of the Aligned Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, but the resulting parameter ranges are in conflict with the constraints from leptonic charm decays. This could indicate a departure from the family universality of the Yukawa couplings, beyond their characteristic fermion mass dependence. We discuss several new observables that are sensitive to a hypothetical charged-scalar contribution, demonstrating that they are well suited to distinguish between different scenarios of new physics in the scalar sector, and also between this group and models with different Dirac structures; their experimental study would therefore shed light on the relevance of scalar exchanges in semileptonic $ b\to c{\tau^{-}}{{\overline{ u}}_{\tau }} $ transitions.

Abstract: For the prediction of the elimination efficiency of micropollutants from wastewater by ozone, the ozone rate constants of the micropollutants and the kinetics of the reaction of ozone with wastewater must be known. The latter is multiphasic with k = 0.071 (mg DOC)(-1) s(-1) for the first mg/L ozone (at a DOC of 7.2 mg/L) followed by 0.011 (mg DOC)(-1) s(-1) the next 5 mg/L ozone and the k = 0.0019 (mg DOC)(-1) s(-1) for subsequent 4 mg/L ozone as determined by stopped-flow and batch-quench methods. An analysis of gel permeation and UV absorption data indicates that the wastewater DOC is largely polymeric, and at 12 mg/L the concentration of its subunits must be near 100 microM with epsilon(254 nm) approximately 3000 M(-1) cm(-1). The *OH radical yield as determined by the tertiary butanol assay is approximately 13%. From its dose dependence, it follows that new *OH-generating sites are formed during ozonation. The *OH scavenging capacity of the wastewater DOC has been determined at 3 x 10(4) (mg DOC)(-1) s(-1). The contribution of bicarbonate to the OH scavenging capacity is small in comparison, approximately 10% of DOC. Simulations indicate that at 5 mg/L ozone only the most reactive (k > 3 x 10(30 M(-1) s(-1)) micropollutants are fully eliminated but at 10 mg/L ozone the slow ozone decay starts to contribute and even the much less reactive ones (k = 300 M(-1) s(-1)) are oxidized (25% remaining).

Abstract: This Letter presents the results from pointlike neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a pointlike source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above ∼1 TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of 2.9σ after accounting for statistical trials from the entire catalog. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3σ significance. The southern catalog is consistent with background. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the 10 years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector.

Abstract: Selective laser melting and other additive manufacturing (AM) techniques have recently attracted substantial interest of both researchers and the processing industry. The freedom of design leads to completely new possibilities for constructions and, thus, to entirely new products. In the selective laser melting (SLM) process, the components are produced layer-wise using a laser beam. SLM is a powder bed based AM process and is characterized by the complete melting of the utilized powder material. Employing SLM, complex three-dimensional parts and light weight structures can be produced directly from 3D CAD data. However, although SLM is a very promising technology, there are still challenges to solve. In the present study, a close look is taken at the porosity. Under cyclic loading, pores can act as stress raisers and lead to premature crack initiations, which reduce the fatigue strength of the material. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) offers the possibility to reduce the porosity. HIP combines high pressure and high temperature to produce materials with superior properties. The influence of the HIP process parameters on the density and microstructure of IN718 SLM components is investigated by means of micro X-ray computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy. The results of the experiments show that the majority of pores can be densified by means of HIP. On the other hand, some pores cannot be densified. The reason for this is seen in entrapped argon gas from the SLM process.
