TL;DR: In this article, the effect of osmotic stress and salinity on seed germination was evaluated using seeds from two wild populations of P. lanceolata, and the results indicated that the seeds of both populations were non-dormant and incubation temperature significantly affected the final germination percentage and growth rate.
Abstract: Plantago lanceolata is a perennial herbaceous plant widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean region. Variation in germination requirements and tolerance to osmotic stress and salinity were tested using seeds from two wild populations. Germination experiments were conducted under controlled conditions at constant (15, 20 and 25oC) and alternating (20/10 and 25/15oC) temperatures, and under a 16 h/8 h light/dark photoperiod. Seeds of both populations were non-dormant and incubation temperature significantly affected the final germination percentage and germination rate. Germination percentages ranged from 27 to 85% for the different temperatures and populations. Significant inter-population variation was found for the germination percentages reached at alternate temperature regimes. To determine the effect of osmotic stress and salinity, four polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000: 10, 20, 30 and 40% w/v) and four NaCl concentrations (50, 100, 200 and 300 mmol·L-1) were tested. Seed germination significantly decreased with increasing in PEG and NaCl concentration. Seed germination recovery when they were transferred to distilled water after PEG or salinity treatments was variable depending on population, suggesting that P. lanceolata seeds are moderately tolerant to osmotic and salt stresses at germination stage.

TL;DR: The University of the Twenty-first Century as mentioned in this paper has been proposed to defend the synergy between teaching and research in academia against the changes experienced by society and the global economy, which may destroy the essence of the university's mission in favour of a single and exclusive "utilitarian" purpose.
Abstract: The university as an institution today has to fight the loss of its privileged position where knowledge is produced. The new concept of a university that emerges from this conflict creates important challenges for the mission of the university and the traditional principal functions of teaching-investigation. By looking at the forces that envelope the equilibrium of these two functions, the study reaffirms their link as the basis for the University of the Twenty-first Century. This premise implies defending the synergy between teaching and research in academia against the changes experienced by society and the global economy, which may destroy the essence of the university’s mission in favour of a single and exclusive ‘utilitarian’ purpose.

TL;DR: The increase of the localities of Himantoglossum robertianum in the Community of Madrid region in the last years is studied in this paper, where a model of potential distribution of the taxon has been elaborated showing the southern river basins of the region as the areas of greatest suitability.
Abstract: The increase of the localities of Himantoglossum robertianum in the Community of Madrid region in the last years is studied. We have visited the new discovered populations and characterized their habitats, finding little agreement with the basophilic preferences attributed to the orchid. A model of potential distribution of the taxon has been elaborated showing the southern river basins of the region as the areas of greatest suitability. The lack of data prevents from concluding that the increase of the registered area corresponds with a climatic or land-use change in Madrid region, but the work developed has allowed to properly characterize the distribution and the state of conservation of the species.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a preliminary assessment of the conservation status (both in situ and ex situ ) of the Spanish CWR that are in a most urgent need of conservation.
Abstract: Crop Wild Relatives (CWR) are receiving significant attention over the last decades. Numerous conservation plans and guidelines to better manage these resources have been developed lately at both national and international levels. In this sense, Spain is following a similar path to that followed by other countries and has included CWR in the National Strategy for Plant Conservation of Spain and invested in scientific projects dealing with their conservation. In this work, we present a preliminary assessment of the conservation status (both in situ and ex situ ) of the Spanish CWR that are in a most urgent need of conservation. Crossability to crops, endemicity, threat status according to IUCN standards and high-quality georeferenced occurrence data were the criteria applied to select the target species, generating a list of 47 CWR species. Eleven of them, classified as Critically Endangered or Endangered by IUCN criteria are not, and should be, included included in the National Catalogue of Threatened Species of Spain; however 35 of them are included in at least one autonomous catalogue. Seventy-five per cent of the species are represented in protected areas, but if a minimum of five populations inside protected areas is sought the representation decreases to a 37%. The preliminary assessment of ex situ conservation shows that a high percentage of the species (81%) has at least one accession in national or international germplasm banks. However, additional studies are needed to determine if the accessions included in germplasm banks provide an adequate representation of the genetic variability of the species.

TL;DR: In this article, a modelo fisico for predicting deformaciones elasticas in volcanic areas is presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the MM5 (PSU/NCAR) meteorological model and CMAQ (EPA, U.S.) air quality modelling system to simulate the impact of NOx emissions due to vehicle traffic (road traffic) on ozone concentrations over the Iberian Peninsula nesting over Madrid domain.
Abstract: The continuous increase on the vehicle fleet in Europe is contributing in a very significant portion to total emission budget particularly over cities with high population density. The ozone concentrations are particularly sensitivity to NOX and VOC's emissions produced by vehicle traffic. The importance of long range transport on urban ozone concentrations is a task subject to heavy research in the last years since urban emission reduction strategies seem to impact on ozone concentration reductions lower than expected. The impact of long range transport is becoming more and more important to explain the resistance to ozone concentrations to be reduced by taking into account only local vehicle traffic emission reductions strategies. In this contribution we have used the MM5 (PSU/NCAR) meteorological model and CMAQ (EPA, U.S.) air quality modelling system to simulate the impact of NOx emissions due to vehicle traffic (road traffic) on ozone concentrations over the Iberian Peninsula nesting over Madrid domain. The mother domain covers a 8100 km × 6480 km centered over the Iberian Peninsula but taking most of North of Africa and up to the North part of Norway. Three nesting levels are used up to Madrid Community level. High sensitivity of emission at Iberian Peninsula level (nesting level 1) are found.
