TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that most of the characterizations that were reported thus far in the literature are special cases of the following general result: a standard multilayer feedforward network with a locally bounded piecewise continuous activation function can approximate any continuous function to any degree of accuracy if and only if the network's activation function is not a polynomial.

TL;DR: The ability to induce formation of human embryoid bodies that contain cells of neuronal, hematopoietic and cardiac origins will be useful in studying early human embryonic development as well as in transplantation medicine.
Abstract: Embryonic stem (ES) cells are lines of cells that are isolated from blastocysts. The murine ES cells were demonstrated to be true pluripotent cells as they differentiate into all embryonic lineages. Yet, in vitro differentiation of rhesus ES cells was somewhat inconsistent and disorganized. The recent isolation of human ES cells calls for exploring their pluripotential nature. Human ES cells were grown in suspension to induce their differentiation into embryoid bodies (EBs). The differentiation status of the human ES cells and EBs was analyzed by following the expression pattern of several lineage-specific molecular markers using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and in situ hybridization. Here we report the induction in vitro of cystic embryoid bodies from human ES cells. Our findings demonstrate induction of expression of cell-specific genes during differentiation of the human ES cells into EBs. In the human EBs, we could show a characteristic regional expression of embryonic markers specific to different cellular lineages, namely, ζ-globin (mesoderm), neurofilament 68Kd (ectoderm), and α-fetoprotein (endoderm). Moreover, we present a synchronously pulsing embryoid body that expresses the myocardium marker α-cardiac actin. In addition, dissociating the embryoid bodies and plating the cells as monolayers results in multiple morphologies, among them cells with neuronal appearance that express neurofilament 68Kd chain. Human ES cells can reproducibly differentiate in vitro into EBs comprising the three embryonic germ layers. The ability to induce formation of human embryoid bodies that contain cells of neuronal, hematopoietic and cardiac origins will be useful in studying early human embryonic development as well as in transplantation medicine.

TL;DR: A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4ℓ decay channels.
Abstract: A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4l decay channels. The results are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the reconstructed invariant mass peaks in the two channels and for the two experiments. The measured masses from the individual channels and the two experiments are found to be consistent among themselves. The combined measured mass of the Higgs boson is mH=125.09±0.21 (stat)±0.11 (syst) GeV.

TL;DR: Hydrogels, which consist of highly water swollen cross-linked polymer networks, can now be made with a range of chemistries and a combination of physical and chemical cross-links, finding use in a wide range of applications, including tissue engineering and drug delivery.
Abstract: Hydrogels are polymeric materials distinguished by high water content and diverse physical properties. They can be engineered to resemble the extracellular environment of the body's tissues in ways that enable their use in medical implants, biosensors, and drug-delivery devices. Cell-compatible hydrogels are designed by using a strategy of coordinated control over physical properties and bioactivity to influence specific interactions with cellular systems, including spatial and temporal patterns of biochemical and biomechanical cues known to modulate cell behavior. Important new discoveries in stem cell research, cancer biology, and cellular morphogenesis have been realized with model hydrogel systems premised on these designs. Basic and clinical applications for hydrogels in cell therapy, tissue engineering, and biomedical research continue to drive design improvements using performance-based materials engineering paradigms.

TL;DR: The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) as discussed by the authors is a natural extension of quantum chaos and random matrix theory (RMT) that allows one to describe thermalization in isolated chaotic systems without invoking the notion of an external bath.
Abstract: This review gives a pedagogical introduction to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), its basis, and its implications to statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. In the first part, ETH is introduced as a natural extension of ideas from quantum chaos and random matrix theory (RMT). To this end, we present a brief overview of classical and quantum chaos, as well as RMT and some of its most important predictions. The latter include the statistics of energy levels, eigenstate components, and matrix elements of observables. Building on these, we introduce the ETH and show that it allows one to describe thermalization in isolated chaotic systems without invoking the notion of an external bath. We examine numerical evidence of eigenstate thermalization from studies of many-body lattice systems. We also introduce the concept of a quench as a means of taking isolated systems out of equilibrium, and discuss results of numerical experiments on quantum quenches. The second part of the review explores the i...
