Abstract: 3D scene flow estimation aims to jointly recover dense geometry and 3D motion from stereoscopic image sequences, thus generalizes classical disparity and 2D optical flow estimation. To realize its conceptual benefits and overcome limitations of many existing methods, we propose to represent the dynamic scene as a collection of rigidly moving planes, into which the input images are segmented. Geometry and 3D motion are then jointly recovered alongside an over-segmentation of the scene. This piecewise rigid scene model is significantly more parsimonious than conventional pixel-based representations, yet retains the ability to represent real-world scenes with independent object motion. It, furthermore, enables us to define suitable scene priors, perform occlusion reasoning, and leverage discrete optimization schemes toward stable and accurate results. Assuming the rigid motion to persist approximately over time additionally enables us to incorporate multiple frames into the inference. To that end, each view holds its own representation, which is encouraged to be consistent across all other viewpoints and frames in a temporal window. We show that such a view-consistent multi-frame scheme significantly improves accuracy, especially in the presence of occlusions, and increases robustness against adverse imaging conditions. Our method currently achieves leading performance on the KITTI benchmark, for both flow and stereo.

Abstract: A gas network basically consists of a set of compressors and valves that are connected by pipes. The problem of gas network optimization deals with the question of how to optimize the flow of the gas and to use the compressors cost-efficiently such that all demands of the gas network are satisfied. This problem leads to a complex mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem. We describe techniques for a piece-wise linear approximation of the nonlinearities in this model resulting in a large mixed integer linear program. We study sub-polyhedra linking these piece-wise linear approximations and show that the number of vertices is computationally tractable yielding exact separation algorithms. Suitable branching strategies complementing the separation algorithms are also presented. Our computational results demonstrate the success of this approach.

Abstract: The surface current response to winds is analyzed in a 2-yr time series of a 12-MHz (HF) Wellen Radar (WERA) off the west coast of France. Consistent with previous observations, the measured currents, after filtering tides, are on the order of 1.0%–1.8% of the wind speed, in a direction 10°–40° to the right of the wind, and with systematic trends as a function of wind speed. This Lagrangian current can be decomposed as the vector sum of a quasi-Eulerian current UE, representative of the top 1 m of the water column and part of the wave-induced Stokes drift Uss at the sea surface. Here, Uss is estimated with an accurate numerical wave model using a novel parameterization of wave dissipation processes. Using both observed and modeled wave spectra, Uss is found to be very well approximated by a simple function of the wind speed and significant wave height, generally increasing quadratically with the wind speed.
