Abstract: The p(t)-differential inclusive production cross sections of the prompt charmed mesons D-0, D+, and D*(+) in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar K-pi(+), D+ -> K-pi(+)pi(+), D*(+) -> D-0 pi(+), and their charge conjugates, about 8,400 D-0, 2,900 D+, and 2,600 D*(+) mesons with 1 < p(t) < 24 GeV/c were counted, after selection cuts, in a data sample of 3.14 x 10(8) events collected with a minimum-bias trigger (integrated luminosity L-int = 5 nb(-1)). The results are described within uncertainties by predictions based on perturbative QCD.

Abstract: As a renewable feedstock and due to its high functionality glycerol is an attractive reactant for the production of a large number of valuable compounds. We report on an environmentally friendly alternative to produce chemicals from the glycerol oxidation, which are currently produced either by stoichiometric oxidation processes or by enzymatic routes. We investigate the heterogeneously catalyzed liquid-phase oxidation of glycerol with carbon supported gold catalysts. The prepared nanosized gold catalysts are highly active, so that the reaction could be performed under atmospheric pressure. The influence of the preparation method of the catalysts has been investigated. Moreover, the support effect on the catalytic process has been studied and discussed in terms of pore structure of the investigated carbon materials. The promotor effect of platinum on Au/C catalysts was examined and it could be shown that the presence of Pt increases not only the catalyst activity but also the selectivity. By promoting the gold catalysts with platinum the selectivity to dihydroxyacetone could be increased from 26% (Au/C) to 36% (Au–Pt/C).

Abstract: Dynamic load management, i.e., allowing electricity utilities to remotely turn electric appliances in households on or off, represents a key element of the smart grid. Appliances should however only be disconnected from mains when no negative side effects, e.g., loss of data or thawing food, are incurred thereby. This motivates the use of appliance identification techniques, which determine the type of an attached appliance based on the continuous sampling of its power consumption. While various implementations based on different sampling resolutions have been presented in existing literature, the achievable classification accuracies have rarely been analyzed. We address this shortcoming and evaluate the accuracy of appliance identification based on the characteristic features of traces collected during the 24 hours of a day. We evaluate our algorithm using more than 1,000 traces of different electrical appliances' power consumptions. The results show that our approach can identify most of the appliances at high accuracy.

Abstract: We present a new ab initio method that uses similarity renormalization group (SRG) techniques to continuously diagonalize nuclear many-body Hamiltonians. In contrast with applications of the SRG to two- and three-nucleon interactions in free space, we perform the SRG evolution ``in medium'' directly in the $A$-body system of interest. The in-medium approach has the advantage that one can approximately evolve $3,\dots{},A$-body operators using only two-body machinery based on normal-ordering techniques. The method is nonperturbative and can be tailored to problems ranging from the diagonalization of closed-shell nuclei to the construction of effective valence-shell Hamiltonians and operators. We present first results for the energies of $^{4}\mathrm{He}$, $^{16}\mathrm{O}$, and $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$, which have accuracies comparable to coupled-cluster calculations.

Abstract: The new element 111 was produced and unambiguously identified in an experiment at SHIP, GSI Darmstadt. Three nuclei of the isotope272111 were observed in irradiations of209Bi targets with64Ni projectiles of 318 MeV and 320 MeV energy. The cross-sections are (1.7 −1.4 +3.3 ) pb and (3.5 −2.3 +4.6 ) pb, respectively. The nuclei decay by a emission into the new and so far the heaviest isotopes of the elements 109 and 107 with mass numbers A=268 and A=264. Theα-decay chains were followed down to the known nuclei260105 and256Lr.
