Abstract: Inspired from the funtioning and responsiveness of biological ion channels, researchers attempt to develop biosensing systems based on polymer and solid-state nanochannels. The applicability of these nanochannels for detection/sensing of any foreign analyte in the surrounding environment depends critically on the surface characteristics of the inner walls. Attaching recognition sites to the channel walls leads to the preparation of sensors targeted at a specific molecule. There are many nanochannel platforms for the detection of DNA and proteins, but only a few are capable of detecting small molecules. Here, we describe a nanochannel platform for the detection of hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, which is not only a toxic waste product in the cellular systems but also a key player in the redox signaling pathways. The sensor is based on single conical nanochannels fabricated in an ion tracked polymer membrane. Abstract: Code-reuse attacks like return-oriented programming (ROP) pose a severe threat to modern software on diverse processor architectures. Designing practical and secure defenses against code-reuse attacks is highly challenging and currently subject to intense research. However, no secure and practical system-level solutions exist so far, since a large number of proposed defenses have been successfully bypassed. To tackle this attack, we present H AFIX (Hardware-Assisted Flow Integrity eXtension), a defense against code-reuse attacks exploiting backward edges (returns). H AFIX provides fine-grained and practical protection, and serves as an enabling technology for future control-flow integrity instantiations. This paper presents the implementation and evaluation of HAFIX for the Intel® Siskiyou Peak and SPARC embedded system architectures, and demonstrates its security and efficiency in code-reuse protection while incurring only 2% performance overhead.

Abstract: Progressive point set surfaces (PPSS) are a multilevel point-based surface representation. They combine the usability of multilevel scalar displacement maps (e.g., compression, filtering, geometric modeling) with the generality of point-based surface representations (i.e., no fixed homology group or continuity class). The multiscale nature of PPSS fosters the idea of point-based modeling. The basic building block for the construction of PPSS is a projection operator, which maps points in the proximity of the shape onto local polynomial surface approximations. The projection operator allows the computing of displacements from smoother to more detailed levels. Based on the properties of the projection operator we derive an algorithm to construct a base point set. Starting from this base point set, a refinement rule using the projection operator constructs a PPSS from any given manifold surface.
